BACKGROUND: While introduction of universal masking was associated with significant declines in health care-associated-respiratory-viral-infections (HA-RVI), subsequent studies have shown mixed results. We sought to evaluate the impact on HA-RVI when masking was continued in the postpandemic period.
METHODS: Observational study in 2 Singaporean hospitals from January 1, 2016 to April 30, 2024. Prepandemic, masking (surgical masks) was only practiced in high-risk wards. During the pandemic, masking was made mandatory hospital-wide, together with other extensive mitigation measures; in the post

IMPORTANCE: Acute infectious conjunctivitis is characterized by ocular redness and discharge, and is a common clinical entity. Evidence-based tools to aid the clinical diagnosis of viral vs bacterial conjunctivitis are lacking and may contribute to overprescribing of topical antibiotics.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative prevalence of viral vs bacterial conjunctivitis in adults and children, and to determine which symptoms or signs are suggestive of a viral vs bacterial etiology.
DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search (January 1946-March 2022) yielded 1891 articles. Included articles were rated u

The term conjunctivitis covers all inflammatory processes affecting the conjunctiva. Bacterial and viral infections are the most frequent causes. Infectious conjunctivitis is rarely severe in industrialized countries, but trachomatous kerato-conjunctivitis is still the main cause of blindness all over the world. Most cases of bacterial conjunctivitis are treated with topical antibiotics. Viral conjunctivitis is frequent and, with the exception of herpetic conjunctivitis, has no specific treatment. Canaliculitis and dacryocystitis are rare but require specialized examination, treatment and foll

Conjunctivitis caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies is one of the most common eye conditions in primary care. There is no single sign or symptom that accurately differentiates viral from bacterial conjunctivitis. A comprehensive history and physical examination can guide diagnosis. Viral and allergic conjunctivitis are more common in adults and typically present with watery discharge. Supportive care options for viral conjunctivitis include artificial tears, cold compresses, and antihistamine eye drops. Strict personal hygiene, including frequent handwashing, is essential to decrease the

Viral conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus is the most common infectious conjunctivitis. Adenoviruses are highly contagious pathogens. The modes of transmission are mainly through hand to eye contact, ocular secretions, respiratory droplets, and contact with ophthalmic care providers and their medical instruments. The most frequent manifestation of ocular adenoviral infection is epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, followed by pharyngoconjunctival fever. Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is also the most severe form and presents with watery discharge, hyperemia, cheosis, and ipsilateral lymphadenopathy.

Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye in primary care. The 3 most common types of conjunctivitis are viral, allergic, and bacterial, and they can present in either acute or chronic forms; the age of the patient, time of year and physical examination findings are paramount to distinguish the different types of conjunctivitis. Distinguishing between acute viral and bacterial conjunctivitis remains difficult. Patients with prolonged symptoms, poor response to initial management, or evidence of severe disease should be referred to ophthalmology for consultation.

The first manifestation of a viral infection may be conjunctivitis. There are limited data on the etiology of viral conjunctivitis in Vanuatu, a country in the South Pacific Ocean. Patients presenting to one of two Vanuatu health centers with presumed infectious conjunctivitis were eligible if symptom onset was within 14 days of screening. Conjunctival and anterior nasal swabs were obtained and subjected to unbiased RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify DNA and RNA viruses. For samples collected from May to November 2021, RNA-seq identified a viral etiology in 12/48 patients. Human adenovi

Between 8 August and 9 October 2005, tropical Singapore experienced a national epidemic of acute viral conjunctivitis. We report the epidemiological and virological findings of outbreaks of viral conjunctivitis in military facilities during the same time period, and the outbreak control measures taken. Outbreaks of viral conjunctivitis were identified by medical officers in military medical facilities. Epidemiological and virological investigations were carried out, and a standard set of control measures was instituted for each outbreak upon detection. Eight outbreaks of viral conjunctivitis o

The present study was conducted on 130 cases of untreated conjunctivitis and 25 control cases to assess the diagnostic value of cytology. Conjunctival scrapings from all cases were stained with Giemsa and Papanicoloau's stain and categorized cytologically and later correlated with the clinical profile. Normal cytologic profile was obtained in 7 cases (5.4%) of the study group and 14 cases (56%) of the control group. Cytologic diagnosis of trachoma was made in 63 cases (48.5%) including 48 out of 51 clinically diagnosed cases of trachoma, 9 cases of allergic conjunctivitis and 6 cases of acute

Chlamydia has been found to be the cause of a high percentage of cases of neonatal and chronic conjunctivitis in an inner-city population. To assess the etiology and epidemiology of acute conjunctivitis in this population, conjunctival scrapings were sampled from 45 patients presenting to an ocular emergency room; and replicate chlamydial, viral, and bacterial cultures and cytology tests were done. No cases of chlamydial conjunctivitis were diagnosed, although a viral etiology was established in 36% of the cases and a bacterial etiology in 40%. Twenty-four percent of the cases were not diagnos
