Expansion of zoonotic babesiosis and reported human cases, Connecticut, 2001-2010.

To document the expansion of human babesiosis in Connecticut, we analyzed reservoir host sera for seroreactivity to Babesia microti Franca and reviewed Connecticut human surveillance case data collected during 2001-2010. Sera from white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus Rafinesque, from 10 towns in 5 counties, collected at 4-7-yr periods between 2001 and 2010, were tested for total immunoglobulins. The prevalence of B. microti-positive mice was compared with confirmed and probable human case reports tabulated by the Connecticut Department of Public Health. The highest babesiosis and rodent sero

Symptomatic cholelithiasis: a different disease in men? Connecticut Laparoscopic Cholesystectomy Registry.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the importance of gender in the clinical presentation and subsequent clinical outcome (risk of conversion from laparoscopic to open technique and risk of postoperative mortality) for patients undergoing cholecystectomy. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Age and clinical presentation have consistently been found to be important predictors of cholecystectomy outcomes; male gender has been cited in disparate studies as possibly having prognostic significance. METHOD: A statewide cholecystectomy registry (30,145 cases between 1989-1993) was analyzed. Hierarchical log-linear modeli

Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus in Person Living with HIV, Connecticut, USA, 2021.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus is an underreported cause of miscarriage and neurologic disease. Surveillance remains challenging because of nonspecific symptomatology, inconsistent case reporting, and difficulties with diagnostic testing. We describe a case of acute lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus disease in a person living with HIV in Connecticut, USA, identified by using quantitative reverse transcription PCR.

Demonstrable parasitemia among Connecticut blood donors with antibodies to Babesia microti.

BACKGROUND: Reports of transfusion-transmitted Babesia microti have risen steadily during the past several years, reflecting a concurrent increase in US cases of human babesiosis. Although several studies have measured B. microti antibodies in blood donors, little is known about associated parasitemia and the inherent risk of transmitting the parasite by transfusion. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Donations from blood donors located in Babesia-endemic and nonendemic areas of Connecticut were tested for B. microti antibodies from July through September. Subsequently, an additional blood sample was

What do physicians know about cryptosporidiosis? A survey of Connecticut physicians.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis, an intestinal parasitic infection, has gained considerable media attention since a 1993 waterborne outbreak in Milwaukee, Wis, in which more than 400,000 persons became ill. However, the incidence of and risk factors for human cryptosporidiosis in the general US population are unknown. It has been suggested, but not documented, that physicians are generally unaware of the need to specifically request testing for this organism. OBJECTIVE: To assess physician awareness of cryptosporidiosis and knowledge of laboratory testing for Cryptosporidium oocysts. METHODS:

Invisible invaders: a decade of delusional infestation cases in Connecticut (2013-2023).

Delusional infestation (DI) is a psychiatric condition characterized by the fixed, false belief of being infested by parasites despite contrary evidence. Although DI patients frequently consult non-medical professionals including entomologists, existing literature derives almost exclusively from medical settings. This retrospective case series describes 264 individuals presenting with suspected DI to The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station Insect Information Office between 2013 and 2023, constituting the largest single-center case series reported in the United States. Cases were predom

Molecular epidemiology, evolution, and transmission dynamics of raccoon rabies virus in Connecticut.

In North America, raccoon rabies virus (RRV) is a public health concern due to its potential for rapid spread, maintenance in wildlife, and impact on human and domesticated animal health. RRV is an endemic zoonotic pathogen throughout the eastern USA. In 1991, an outbreak of RRV in Fairfield County, Connecticut, spread through the state and eventually throughout the Northeast and into Canada. Factors that contribute to, or curb, RRV transmission should be explored and quantified to guide targeted rabies control efforts, including the size and location of buffer zones of vaccinated animals. How

Lessons learned from the investigation of a cluster of cutaneous anthrax cases in Connecticut.

In 2007, two cases of cutaneous anthrax associated with West African drum making were reported in Connecticut in a drum-maker and his child. Although both cases were due to exposure to naturally occurring Bacillus anthracis from imported animal hides, ensuing investigative and remediation efforts were affected by the intentional B anthracis attacks in 2001. To share our experience of responding to an outbreak of anthrax in the biologic terrorism preparedness era, we summarize Connecticut's investigation and describe lessons learned. Laboratory capacity to rapidly assist in diagnosing anthrax,

Occupational exposure to solvents and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Connecticut women.

A population-based case-control study involving 601 incident cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and 717 controls was conducted in 1996-2000 among Connecticut women to examine associations with exposure to organic solvents. A job-exposure matrix was used to assess occupational exposures. Increased risk of NHL was associated with occupational exposure to chlorinated solvents (odds ratio (OR) = 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1, 1.8) and carbon tetrachloride (OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.3, 4.0). Those ever exposed to any organic solvent in work settings had a borderline increased risk of NHL (OR =

Risk factors for human exposure to raccoon rabies during an epizootic in Connecticut.

The emergence of rabies among terrestrial wildlife poses increasing but poorly defined risks to people. In particular, events leading to human exposure to rabies virus via mammalian reservoirs remain elusive. Thus, we determined those risk factors associated with human exposure to rabies-positive animals during a raccoon rabies epizootic in Connecticut. Existing passive surveillance data on animal rabies tests in Connecticut from 1991 through 1994 were evaluated for demographic, ecological, and behavioral characteristics of human exposure. Of 2,525 rabies-positive terrestrial animals identifie

Human exposure to a granulocytic Ehrlichia and other tick-borne agents in Connecticut.

Indirect fluorescent-antibody (IFA) staining methods with Ehrlichia equi (MRK or BDS strains) and Western blot analyses containing a human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) agent (NCH-1 strain) were used to confirm probable human cases of infection in Connecticut during 1995 and 1996. Also included were other tests for Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), Babesia microti, and Borrelia burgdorferi. Thirty-three (8.8%) of 375 patients who had fever accompanied by marked leukopenia or thrombocytopenia were serologically confirmed as having HGE. Western blot analys

Prevalence of reading disability in boys and girls. Results of the Connecticut Longitudinal Study.

We hypothesized that results of previous investigations indicating an increased prevalence of reading disability in boys compared with girls reflected a bias in subject selection. In an epidemiologic sample of 215 girls and 199 boys, we identified two groups of reading-disabled children: research identified and school identified. Results indicated no significant differences in the prevalence of reading disability in research-identified boys compared with research-identified girls in either second (17[8.7%] of 196 boys; 15[6.9%] of 216 girls) or third grade (18[9.0%] of 199 boys; 13[6.0%] of 21

Cancer registration in Connecticut and the study of multiple primary cancers, 1935-82.

The Connecticut Tumor Registry (CTR) was established in 1941 and is the oldest population-based cancer registry in the world. Since 1935, all malignant tumors have been registered, and cancer patients are followed annually for vital status. Reporting by hospitals of all cancers diagnosed in Connecticut residents became mandatory in 1971. The reporting physician or hospital makes the initial determination as to whether a tumor is an independent primary cancer, recurrent tumor, or metastatic lesion. In addition, the Registry maintains stringent quality control procedures to avoid duplication of

Modeling Changes of Fatal Xylazine-Involved Drug Overdoses in Connecticut Across Time.

BACKGROUND: Fatal drug overdoses have involved both xylazine and fentanyl. Xylazine is a non-opioid substance used in veterinary medicine. This study aimed to model changes in fatal xylazine-involved drug overdose deaths from 2019 to 2023 in Connecticut using overdose death data from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. METHODS: Xylazine-involved drug overdose fatality rates were calculated by number of deaths per year per 100,000 population from 2019 to 2023. We used joinpoint regression modeling to evaluate quarterly overdose rates across age, number of drugs, and drug types with a sig

Genetic relationships of Jamestown Canyon virus strains infecting mosquitoes collected in Connecticut.

Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) (family Bunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus) is maintained in a mosquito-deer cycle and has been implicated in the etiology of meningitis and encephalitis with human cases reported from Ontario, Canada, Michigan, Connecticut, and New York. Despite the recognition of symptomatic cases in the northeastern United States, little is known about the genetic relationships of JCV variants circulating in this region. Accordingly, we compared the phylogenetic relationships of 56 JCV isolates from mosquitoes collected in Connecticut over a 40-year period to evaluate their evo

A case-control study of testicular cancer using Connecticut tumour registry data.

This case-control study was designed to determine whether males who were exposed to diethylstilboestrol (DES) in utero are at increased risk of testicular cancer. Questionnaires were completed for 79 residents of Connecticut, who were diagnosed with primary cancer of the testes between 1945 and approximately six months into 1980. An equal number of matched controls drawn from birth certificate records available from the Connecticut State Department of Health Services also submitted questionnaires. Information included data on past medical conditions of subjects and obstetrical history of mothe
