Though soft tissue disorders have been recognized and described to some detail in several types of domestic animals and small mammals for some years, not much progress has been made in our understanding of the biochemical basis and pathogenesis of these diseases in animals. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome described in dogs already in 1943 and later in cats affects mainly skin in these animals. The involved skin is thin and hyperextensible with easily inflicted injuries resulting in hemorrhagic wounds and atrophic scars. Joint laxity and dislocation common in people are less frequently found in dogs. No

Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) are defined as a group of acquired disorders resulting from persistent immuno-mediated inflammation. Several classes of drugs seem to be capable of inducing or exacerbating CTDs. A drug-induced (DI) syndrome is defined as a condition temporally related to continuous drug exposure, which resolves upon drug discontinuation. Among CTDs, lupus erythematosus is the most widely known and investigated DI syndrome. However, in recent years, the association between the onset of other CTDs, such as dermatomyositis (DM) and morphea/systemic sclerosis (SSc) has increased

The connective tissue disorders comprise a number of related conditions that include systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the antiphospholipid (Hughes) syndrome, scleroderma, myositis and Sjögren's syndrome. They are characterized by autoantibody production and other immune-mediated dysfunction. There are common clinical and serological features with some patients having multiple overlapping connective tissue disorders. The latest advances include new approaches to therapy, including more focused utilization of existing therapies and the introduction of biological therapies in SLE, more prec

Joint manifestations are common and often constitute the first symptoms or signs of a connective tissue disease, which should be carefully looked for, according to the clinic, in particular with ultrasound and the research of autoantibodies. Articular manifestations are often severe and must be treated accordingly. In lupus, one can distinguish non-deforming non-erosive arthropathy, Jaccoud's arthropathy (deforming non-erosive) and erosive arthropathy (rhupus). Ultrasound has recently shown that destructive forms are in fact more frequent than initially considered. In addition, lupus can be co

This article provides a broad overview of the complex intersection between the connective tissue diseases (CTDs) and their pulmonary manifestations. Indirect pulmonary complications - such as respiratory infection and medication-induced lung toxicity - are briefly discussed, and the importance of a comprehensive assessment of the patient with CTD with respiratory symptoms is emphasized. A concise review of the many pulmonary manifestations of each specific CTD is provided, and particular emphasis is placed on CTD-associated interstitial lung disease.

There is evidence that early treatment of connective tissue in adolescence improves clinical outcomes; thus, recognition of the cutaneous manifestation of CTD is critical. This review summarizes the clinical features that are unique to children and adolescents in cutaneous (CLE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), juvenile systemic scleroderma (JSS), juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS), and juvenile inflammatory arthritis (JIA).

Prognosis of the renal involvement of connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus or systemic sclerosis is getting better due to the induction of the new immunosuppressant such as tacrolimus and hypotonicas which reduce glomerular hypertension such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Since patients with myeloperoxidase-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody related glomerulonephritis are older than those with Wegener's granulomatosis, the strong immunosuppressive treatment recommended in Western countries should be avoided. UNLABELLED: The connective tissue disorders frequently give rise to orofacial manifestations, especially dry mouth because of Sjögren's syndrome. In addition, the systemic complications of such diseases may impact upon the provision of oral health care. The present article reviews the consequences of connective tissue disorders of relevance to oral health care providers.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Connective tissue disorders can give rise to oral manifestations and systemic complications that may occasionally compromise primary oral health care.

Guidelines and diagnostic algorithms for the introduction of diagnostic procedures for connective tissue diseases have not yet been established and standardized. Diagnosis is often based on the patients's typical history, clinical symptoms and specific laboratory profiles. The use of diagnostic imaging procedures is relevant for differential diagnosis, for the assessment of disease activity and organ involvement, for defining the prognosis and monitoring responses to therapy and side effects. Experience with these techniques and diagnostic procedures, their application, indications and analysi

Connective tissue disorders have well-known ocular associations that may be presenting features of the disease or occur as complications during the course of the disorder. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, keratitis, scleritis, uveitis, retinal vasculitis, choroidopathy, and their associations with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and polymyositis are reviewed.

Inflammatory and fibrotic processes can involve the small airways (i.e., respiratory and terminal bronchioles) in several connective tissue disorders (CTDs). Obliterative (constrictive) bronchiolitis (OB) as well cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP), previously termed bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia (BOOP), are well-recognized, albeit rare, complications of rheumatoid arthritis and other CTDs. Bronchiectasis has also been described in patients with CTDs. Among the various pathologic conditions, clinical, radiographic, and histologic features and prognosis differ markedly.

Connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and scleroderma are systemic disorders that may have an autoimmune basis. The system manifestations vary, and there is frequent overlap among the syndromes. Liver involvement in patients with connective tissue diseases has been well documented but is generally considered rare. Although advanced liver disease with cirrhosis and liver failure is rare in patients with connective tissue diseases, clinical and biochemical evidence of associated liver abnormalities is common. OBJECTIVE: To describe the pregnancy outcome in women with systemic lupus erythematosus and other connective tissue diseases attending a specialized high risk clinic at the Royal London Hospital.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 30 patients seen over a 30-month period. Diagnoses included 18 patients with lupus and 5 with mixed connective tissue disease. Patients were evaluated following a standardized protocol.
RESULTS: For all patients there were 28 (93%) live births and 2 spontaneous abortions. Of the live births, 6 (21%) were preterms and 5 (17%) were small for gestational age. For the 18

Neuropathies are a common neurologic manifestation of diffuse connective tissue disease. Vasculitic neuropathy requires prompt diagnosis and treatment to improve its outcome. It is commonly multifocal but may be confluent and symmetrical. Vasculitic neuropathy needs to be distinguished from the more common syndromes of compression neuropathy, which may also be multifocal, and nonvasculitic distal axonal polyneuropathy. Sensory neuronopathy is a distinctive syndrome unique to Sjögren's syndrome among the connective tissue diseases. Trigeminal sensory neuropathy may be the presenting feature of

Use of the operating microscope and microsurgical instrumentation has made possible modifications in conventional root coverage procedures that eliminate vertical incisions, papillary elevation, and secondary intention wound healing. Greater precision in incisions and suturing done with microsurgery allows clinicians to obtain predictable root coverage with more aesthetic postoperative results and reduced patient discomfort.

In a histochemical and electron microscopic study of 45 cases of keratoconus, oxytalan fibres, a member of the elastic fibre family, were found in the extracellular tissues of the cornea. Oxytalan fibres were identified beneath the epithelium over the thinned central region of the conical cornea as well as in areas of stromal scarring. In a number of instances the apparently thickened Descemet's membrane was shown to include an oxytalan-containing retro-corneal layer. Oxytalan fibres were found to be immunostained by antibodies raised against collagen type VI.

Since 1981, 21 children diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) have been reported in detail in the literature in Japan. Overlapping clinical features and laboratory findings of these children were analyzed according to the established criteria of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japan. Mixed connective tissue disease in childhood typically begins with Raynaud's phenomenon preceded by several months or years with the appearance of other symptoms and signs including fever, arthralgia, myalgia, and/or progressive systemic sclerosis like skin manifestations. Serologically all the
