[Juvenile myasthenia gravis in sub-Saharan Africa: a case study of two consanguine sisters born from consanguinity in Togo].

Myasthenia gravis is a rare acquired autoimmune pathology causing neuromuscular transmission impairment. Juvenile onset of myasthenia gravis is often characterized by ocular involvement. We report two cases of ocular juvenile myasthenia gravis (JMG) in two siblings. They were two young girls, XA and XB, aged 11 and 9 years, of Malian origin, residing in Togo, born from first-degree of consanguinity presenting to Ophthalmology due to progressive decrease in visual acuity. XA showed visual acuity 8/10 on both eyes while XB showed improvement in visual acuity from 3/10 to 7/10 using a pinhole occ

Parental Consanguinity and Risk for Childhood Hearing Loss: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Genetic causes are responsible for half of the cases of hearing loss, most of them being the result of non-syndromic genetic changes resulting from autosomal recessive inheritance. Parental consanguinity might be an indicator to consider in the diagnosis of these cases. The aim of this study was to assess its importance as a risk factor for childhood hearing loss. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study conducted in a district hospital, between 2014 and 2018. We included all live births born during this period and excluded those with risk factors for childhood hearing

Detection of renal anomalies using antenatal and postnatal ultrasound: The consanguinity factor.

INTRODUCTION: Antenatal ultrasound (US) is considered the gold standard tool to detect fetal anomalies during the antenatal period. However, its highly operator dependent and maybe affected with other variables. The aim of this study to compare discrepancy between antenatal and postnatal US diagnosis of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) and to evaluate the incidence of parent's consanguinity among those patients at King Abdulaziz Medical City - Western Region (KAMC-WR), as it may help changing the current practiced guidelines and applied protocols. METHODS: This is

BRCA1/BRCA2 Mutations Shaped by Ancient Consanguinity Practice in Southern Mediterranean Populations.

The aim of this study is to investigate the involvement of consanguinity on BRCA1/2 mutation incidence in Southern Mediterranean populations and to confirm their low penetrance by comparison of their recurrence in sporadic and familial breast cancer in a context of ancient consanguinity practice. Our study comprises of two parts: First, a comparison of the consanguinity rates of the South Mediterranean countries in a relationship with the frequency of BRCA1 deleterious mutations in breast cancer families and the recurrence of these mutations. Second, we investigated 23patients with a family hi

Parental consanguinity is associated with a severe phenotype in common variable immunodeficiency.

The DEFI study has collected clinical data and biological specimens from kindreds with CVID. Patients with demonstrated parental consanguinity (cCVID group) were compared to patients without parental consanguinity (ncCVID). A total of 24 of the 436 patients with CVID had consanguineous parents. Age at first symptoms and age at diagnosis were comparable in the two groups. Some complications were more frequent in cCVID patients: splenomegaly (62.5% vs. 29%; p = 0.001), granulomatous disease (29% vs. 12%; p = 0.02), and bronchiectasis (58% vs. 29%; p = 0.003). A high incidence of opportunistic in

UNLABELLED: Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) was a group of rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by the deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme, alpha -L -iduronidase, and the resulting accumulation of undergraded dematan sulfate and heparan sulfate. MPS I patients have a wide range of clinical presentations, that makes it difficult to predict patient phenotype which is needed for genetic counseling and also impedes the selection and evaluation of patients undergoing therapy bone marrow transplantation. AIM OF THE STUDY: consanguinity rates have been determined among 14 families with mucop

Consanguinity in primary immunodeficiency disorders; the report from Iranian Primary Immunodeficiency Registry.

PROBLEM: Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders (PiD) are a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders, with different modes of inheritance. This study was accomplished in order to determine the frequency of consanguineous marriages in the families of patients with PiD. METHOD: In this study, the records 515 Iranian PiD patients were reviewed during a 25-year period. RESULTS: The mean proportion of consanguineous marriages was 65.6% among PiD patients, while the overall rate was 38.6% in the country. The rate of consanguinity was 77.8% in cellular immunodeficiencies, 75.8% in combined immunodefici

Reproductive wastage and developmental disorders in relation to consanguinity in south India.

The effect of consanguinity on fertility, reproductive loss and developmental disorders were studied in 156 consanguineous marriages in comparison with 221 non-consanguineous marriages. Although fertility was greater (P less than 0.05) in consanguineous than in non-consanguineous marriages, the number of living children were approximately equal in both groups, on account of increased child mortality in the former (P less than 0.05). The frequencies of abortion and stillbirth were (also) approximately equal in both groups. Developmental anomalies were significantly more frequent (P less than 0.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) is a rare, life-threatening systemic inflammatory disorder characterized by excessive immune activation. It is primarily caused by mutations affecting cytotoxic function in natural killer cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial due to the condition's rapid progression and high mortality without intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: In August 2023, a 3-year-old Asian male patient was admitted, exhibiting symptoms of high fever, jaundice, and hepatosplenomegaly. Initial investigations

Linkages between consanguinity, pregnancy outcomes and offspring mortality in twenty-first century India.

We hypothesized that consanguineous marriage will remain a risk factor for pregnancy outcome and offspring mortality, but the development in demographic, socioeconomic conditions and increased utilization of maternal and child health care services during postglobalization era would work as a buffer in the reduction of child mortality rates. Data fromNational Family Health Surveys 4(2015-2016) and 5(2019-2021) were pooled and used for the analysis. Binary logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine the effects of close (CC) and distant (DC) consanguini

Low level of consanguinity in moroccan families at high risk of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is worldwide the most common cancer in women and is a major public health problem. Genes with high or low penetrance are now clearly implicated in the onset of breast cancer, mostly the BRCA genes. All women in families at high risk of breast cancer do not develop tumours, even when they carry the familial mutation, suggesting the existence of genetic and environmental protective factors. Several studies have shown that consanguinity is linked to a decreased or an increased risk of breast cancer, but to the best of our knowledge, there is no study concerning the assoc

Consanguinity: a risk factor for preterm birth at less than 33 weeks' gestation.

Consanguinity promotes homozygosity of recessive susceptibility gene variants and can be used to investigate a recessive component in diseases whose inheritance is uncertain. The objective of this study was to assess the association between consanguinity and preterm birth (PTB), stratified by gestational age and clinical presentation (spontaneous vs. medically indicated). Data were collected on 39,745 singleton livebirths without major birth defects, admitted to 19 hospitals in Lebanon, from September 2003 to December 2007. Deliveries before completed 33 weeks' gestation and deliveries at 33-3

Fetus with two identical reciprocal translocations: description of a rare complication of consanguinity.

We report on a 24-week fetus with multiple organ anomalies secondary to biparental inheritance of an apparently balanced t(17;20) reciprocal translocation. The pregnancy was terminated following the discovery by ultrasound of an abnormal heart and micrognathia. At autopsy, the following anomalies were found: Pierre-Robin sequence, hypoplasia of the right ventricle with muscular hypertrophy, and endocardial fibroelastosis, hypoplastic lungs, dysplastic left kidney, bilateral pelvicalyceal dilatation, central nervous system periventricular heterotopias and right sided club foot.
