Unified Response to COVID-19 Case Investigation and Contact Tracing, Chicago, December 2020-April 2021.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated 2 innovative approaches that supported COVID-19 case investigation and contact tracing (CI/CT) in Chicago communities: (1) early engagement of people diagnosed with COVID-19 by leveraging the existing Healthcare Alert Network to send automated telephone calls and text messages and (2) establishment of a network of on-site case investigators and contact tracers within partner health care facilities (HCFs) and community-based organizations (CBOs). METHODS: The Chicago Department of Public Health used Healthcare Alert Network data to calculate the proportion of people wi

Establishing prison-led contact tracing to prevent outbreaks of COVID-19 in prisons in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Preventing transmission of COVID-19 within prisons is both important and challenging. The confined conditions in prisons can encourage person-to-person spread with the potential for outbreaks occurring. Contact tracing is an important contributor to the longer-term management strategy for COVID-19 in prisons as well as in the community but is highly resource-intensive. This paper describes the approach to contact tracing taken by the Irish Prison Service (IPS). METHODS: The IPS National Infection Control Team, in collaboration with the National Quality Improvement (QI) team and He

Containment, Contact Tracing and Asymptomatic Transmission of Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19): A Modelling Study.

When a novel infectious disease emerges, enhanced contact tracing and isolation are implemented to prevent a major epidemic, and indeed, they have been successful for the control of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), which have been greatly reduced without causing a global pandemic. Considering that asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic infections are substantial for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the feasibility of preventing the major epidemic has been questioned. Using a two-type branching process model, the present study assesses the

Contact Tracing Activities during the Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic in Kindia and Faranah, Guinea, 2014.

The largest recorded Ebola virus disease epidemic began in March 2014; as of July 2015, it continued in 3 principally affected countries: Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Control efforts include contact tracing to expedite identification of the virus in suspect case-patients. We examined contact tracing activities during September 20-December 31, 2014, in 2 prefectures of Guinea using national and local data about case-patients and their contacts. Results show less than one third of case-patients (28.3% and 31.1%) were registered as contacts before case identification; approximately two thir

Using Social Networking Sites for Communicable Disease Control: Innovative Contact Tracing or Breach of Confidentiality?

Social media applications such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook have attained huge popularity, with more than three billion people and organizations predicted to have a social networking account by 2015. Social media offers a rapid avenue of communication with the public and has potential benefits for communicable disease control and surveillance. However, its application in everyday public health practice raises a number of important issues around confidentiality and autonomy. We report here a case from local level health protection where the friend of an individual with meningococcal septica

Logistics of community smallpox control through contact tracing and ring vaccination: a stochastic network model.

BACKGROUND: Previous smallpox ring vaccination models based on contact tracing over a network suggest that ring vaccination would be effective, but have not explicitly included response logistics and limited numbers of vaccinators. METHODS: We developed a continuous-time stochastic simulation of smallpox transmission, including network structure, post-exposure vaccination, vaccination of contacts of contacts, limited response capacity, heterogeneity in symptoms and infectiousness, vaccination prior to the discontinuation of routine vaccination, more rapid diagnosis due to public awareness, su

An epidemiological approach to sexually transmitted diseases--with special reference to contact tracing and screening.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) are a major health problem all over the world. The diseases are often spread by unsuspecting asymptomatic individuals. One important means of controlling STD is thus the identification of asymptomatic persons. The purposes of this thesis were a) to describe methods of identifying infected individuals through contact tracing and screening, b) to evaluate contact tracing routines, c) to compare epidemiological characteristics of two different groups of chlamydia-infected women and their partners and d) to see if data from contact tracing could be used in a mod

Quantifying the impact of contact tracing interview prioritisation strategies on disease transmission: A modelling study.

Contact tracing is an important public health measure used to reduce transmission of infectious diseases. Contact tracers typically conduct telephone interviews with cases to identify contacts and direct them to quarantine, with the aim of preventing onward transmission. However, in situations where caseloads exceed the capacity of the public health system, timely interviews may not be feasible for all cases. Here we present a modelling framework for assessing the impact of different case interview prioritisation strategies on disease transmission. Our model is based on Australian contact trac

Factors Associated with Reliable Contact Tracing During the 2021 Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak in Guinea.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak was declared in Guinea, linked to persistent virus from the 2014-2016 West Africa Epidemic. This paper analyzes factors associated with contact tracing reliability (defined as completion of a 21-day daily follow-up) during the 2021 outbreak, and transitively, provides recommendations for enhancing contact tracing reliability in future. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study using multivariate regression analysis of contact tracing data from 1071 EVD contacts of 23 EVD cases (16 confirmed and 7 probabl

Usability, inclusivity, and content evaluation of COVID-19 contact tracing apps in the United States.

We evaluated the usability of mobile COVID-19 contact tracing apps, especially for individuals with barriers to communication and limited digital literacy skills. We searched the Apple App Store, Google Play, peer-reviewed literature, and lay press to find contact tracing apps in the United States. We evaluated apps with a framework focused on user characteristics and user interface. Of the final 26 apps, 77% were on both iPhone and Android. 69% exceeded 9th grade readability, and 65% were available only in English. Only 12% had inclusive illustrations (different genders, skin tones, physical

Latent tuberculous infection in schoolchildren and contact tracing in Matlosana, North West Province, South Africa.

This is a cross-sectional study to estimate the prevalence of latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) and the annual risk of tuberculous infection (ARTI) among a sample of children aged 5 and 7 years in Matlosana, South Africa. LTBI prevalence was significantly higher in children aged 7 years (n = 704) (19.7%, 95%CI 16.75-22.65) than in those aged 5 years (212/1401, 15.1%, 95%CI 13.23-16.97) (P = 0.0075). The ARI was 2.9% (95%CI 2.2-3.6).

Predictors of contact tracing completion and outcomes in tuberculosis: a 21-year retrospective cohort study.

SETTING: Birmingham, UK, 1990-2010. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors in contacts for completion of screening and of a positive screening outcome, i.e., a diagnosis of latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) or active tuberculosis (TB). DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of TB notifications for a European city. RESULTS: A total of 46,158 contacts were identified from 7365 index cases. Over the study period 17,471 (40.9%) failed to complete screening. Active TB or LTBI was diagnosed in 2220 (7.0%) contacts of cases of pulmonary TB (PTB) and in 222 (2.7%) contacts of cases of extra-pulmonary TB

Evaluating the effectiveness of contact tracing on tuberculosis outcomes in Saskatchewan using individual-based modeling.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially fatal disease spread by an airborne pathogen infecting approximately one third of the globe. For decades, contact tracing (CT) has served a key role in the control of TB and many other notifiable communicable diseases. Unfortunately, CT is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process and is often conducted by a small and overworked nursing staff. To help improve the effectiveness of CT, we introduce a detailed, individual-based model of CT for the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The model captures the detailed operation of TB CT, including loss to follow-u

Contact tracing of a 15-year-old girl with smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis in Tehran.

Early detection of tuberculosis (TB) cases and supervised treatment are vital for control of the disease. To assess TB transmission from a sputum smear-negative pulmonary TB case, the contacts of a 15-year-old Iranian girl diagnosed with smear-negative TB in 2010 were traced. In all, 52 classmates and close friends and 15 school staff were screened by tuberculin skin test and chest X-ray. Those with a positive skin test or abnormal chest X-ray were further evaluated by chest spiral computed tomography (CT) scan and triple gastric washing. All classmates and close friends were Iranian and femal

TB transmission on public transportation: a review of published studies and recommendations for contact tracing.

SETTING: The risk of transmission when persons with active tuberculosis travel on buses or trains is uncertain and no recommendations have been published for contact investigations on these conveyances. DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review of the published studies of tuberculosis transmission among bus or train travelers. RESULTS: Twelve published reports were identified, including one retrospective cohort study and eleven contact investigations. One contact investigation involved train travelers and one involved students on a 6 h bus excursion. The remaining nine involved exposures on s

Contact tracing and serosurvey among healthcare workers exposed to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Greece.

We investigated the probability of nosocomial transmission of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus among healthcare workers (HCWs) who cared for the first CCHF case in Greece. Specific IgM and/or IgG antibodies against CCHF virus were not detected in the 21 HCWs studied. Although person-to-person transmission did not take place, education of HCWs about the modes of CCHF virus transmission and appropriate infection control measures is needed in order to avoid future nosocomial cases.

A 'little world of your own': stigma, gender and narratives of venereal disease contact tracing.

As in other countries, in order to protect the public from venereal disease (syphilis and gonorrhoea), contact tracing in New Zealand has been a public health strategy since the mid-20th century. So far, scholars have predominantly focused on the aspect of control of the cases traced. Based on a rare interview with a female contact tracer, together with a range of archival material, this article aims to expand the scholarship by focusing on the tracer instead of the patient. Using Erving Goffman's original concept of 'courtesy stigma', the article will show that his idea can be nuanced to take
