Decreased allopregnanolone induced by hormonal contraceptives is associated with a reduction in social behavior and sexual motivation in female rats.

RATIONALE: Allopregnanolone is a neurosteroid involved in depression, memory, social, and sexual behavior. We have previously demonstrated that treatment with a combination of ethinylestradiol (EE) and levonorgestrel (LNG), two compounds frequently used in hormonal contraception, decreased brain allopregnanolone concentrations. These changes may contribute to some of the emotional and sexual disorders observed in hormonal contraceptive users. OBJECTIVES: We thus examined whether the reduction in allopregnanolone concentrations induced by long-term EE/LNG administration was associated with alt

International Travel as a Context for Sexual and Contraceptive Behaviors: A Qualitative Study of Young Women Traveling Outside the U.S.

International travel is popular worldwide, yet its implications for sexual and reproductive health are not fully understood. Few studies have examined the contextual factors that shape women's sexual and contraceptive behaviors-and thus, their risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)-while traveling outside their home country. In this qualitative study, female university students with recent (n = 25) or upcoming (n = 19) travel outside the U.S. completed semi-structured interviews from October 2015 to March 2017. Transcripts were analyzed for themes related to co

Sexual and physical abuse among incarcerated youth: implications for sexual behavior, contraceptive use, and teenage pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, physical and sexual abuse among incarcerated youth were examined with respect to sexual activity, contraceptive use, and pregnancy. METHOD: The self-report survey data were collected from 62 females and 334 males who were incarcerated in Nevada youth correctional facilities in the summer of 1994. Of the males, 46.8% (n = 156) reported a history of physical abuse and 9.9% (n = 33) reported sexual abuse. A surprisingly high 73% (n = 46) of the females reported a history of physical abuse and 68.3% (n = 43) reported sexual abuse. RESULTS: The analyses indicated

Should condom use be promoted for contraception to prevent transmission of sexual transmitted diseases and AIDS? ACSF Group. French National Survey of Sexual behavior.

BACKGROUND: This study is an exploration of the relationship between the use of oral contraceptive or intrauterine device and condom use. The results should help us better understand how promoting condoms for contraception as compared to sexually transmitted disease prophylaxis might be an effective way of increasing their use in certain populations. METHODS: Women not involved in stable relationships were selected from the French National Survey on Sexual Behaviour using multi-stage probability sampling. We compared frequency of condom use at the last sexual intercourse by women who were usi

School, behavior and health-related difficulties in early adolescents with contraceptive consultation: a population-based study in eastern France.

BACKGROUND: Early adolescence (10-16 years) is a crucial period for physical, mental and cognitive development where a wide range of school, behavior and health-related difficulties may occur. These issues may be aggravated in adolescents with early affective/sexual live and contraceptive consultation. This study assessed the risk of school, behavior and health-related problems among younger boys and girls having a contraceptive consultation. Such knowledge would inform care providers about their main role in monitoring and caring adolescent problems. METHODS: This cross-sectional study inclu

Susceptibility of middle adolescent females to sexually transmitted infections: impact of hormone contraception and sexual behaviors on vaginal immunity.

PROBLEM: The resistance and/or susceptibility to infections can be influenced by patterns of immunomodulators. Based on this and the high rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents, we examined the longitudinal relationship between sexual behaviors, hormonal contraceptive use, and bacterial vaginosis (BV) with vaginal-associated immunomodulators in adolescent females. METHOD OF STUDY: Over 27 months, subjects completed detailed questionnaires, and consented to vaginal swabs for STI testing, and vaginal lavages for identification of immunomodulators including T-helper, proin

Association Between Intimate Partner Violence and Contraceptive Use in India: Exploring the Moderating Role of Husband's Controlling Behaviors.

Existing studies show a mixed relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and contraceptive use. This study assesses the association between women's exposure to IPV and contraceptive use in India. Furthermore, we aim to determine whether husband's controlling behaviors play a moderating role in the IPV-contraception link. We used nationally representative data from the recent round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), conducted in 2015-2016. In this study, the use of contraceptives is the outcome variable, categorized into three groups: no/traditional methods, modern methods

Impact of the village health center project on contraceptive behaviors in rural Jordan: a quasi-experimental difference-in-differences analysis.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate contraceptive use remains a major health challenge in rural Jordan. The Japan International Cooperation Agency implemented a project aimed at enhancing the capacity of village health centers (VHCs) to improve the quality and quantity of family planning (FP) services in rural Jordan in 2016-2018. Facility- and community-based approaches were integrated into the interventions. We evaluated the project's impacts on contraceptive behaviors and the effectiveness of the two approaches. METHODS: We used a difference-in-differences analysis based on the project baseline and en

Contraceptive choices of women 35-44 years of age: findings from the behavioral risk factor surveillance system.

PURPOSE: With an estimated 3.1 million unintended pregnancies in the United States each year, patterns of contraceptive use have significant public health importance. Little literature has focused on these patterns in women over age 35. METHODS: Using data from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we conducted a population-based analysis of 22,890 women between the ages of 35-44 years who completed information on family planning. Lifestyle, demographic, and medical history covariates were assessed and multinomial logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios (OR) and 95%

Using the theory of planned behavior and self-identity to explore women's decision-making and intention to switch from combined oral contraceptive pill (COC) to long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC).

BACKGROUND: \Most college women use the combined oral contraceptive pill (COC) despite more effective long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods (e.g., IUDs and implant) being available. Resistance to change methods may be impacted by how a woman identifies with being a COC-user. METHODS: Data were collected via 186 web-based surveys distributed to female students attending a university in the southeastern United States (Mean age = 20.0 ± 1.; range = 18-22). Structural equation modeling (SEM) determined TPB fit in understanding LARC intention. RESULTS: SEM results received acceptabl

Using behavioral economic theory to increase use of effective contraceptives among opioid-maintained women at risk of unintended pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: An unsettling aspect of the US opioid epidemic is the high rate of in utero exposure, especially since most of these pregnancies are unintended, due in part to low rates of effective contraceptive use among opioid-using women. This study tested an intervention informed by behavioral economic theory and aimed at promoting effective contraceptive use among opioid-maintained women at risk of unintended pregnancy in the Burlington, VT, area between 2011 and 2013. METHODS: Thirty-one women were assigned (initial 5 consecutively, subsequent 26 randomly) to either usual care or an experim

"I Don't Even Understand How They Function": Contraception Information, Motivation, and Behavioral Skills Among Women Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Women experiencing homelessness have higher rates of unintended pregnancies than stably housed women. Given that some of this may be attributed to nonuse or inconsistent use of contraception, we explored the behavioral cognitions for contraceptive use among women experiencing homelessness. The Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model can examine health behavior cognitions, while acknowledging the macro-level context. Therefore, this study explored the IMB characteristics related to contraception use among women experiencing homelessness. METHODS: We conducted interview
