The development and regression of deciduosarcomas and other lesions caused by estrogens and progestins in rabbits.

A series of experiments were conducted to study the histopathological effects of a combination of exogenous estrogens and progestins in mature rabbits. Estradiol (14-45 microg/day) and levonorgestrel (30-233 microg/day) were administered by intravaginal or subdermal Silastic devices for various time intervals to study the development of lesions with time and to determine if lesions regressed following withdrawal of the steroids. The origin of splenic decidual tumors (primary or metastasis from the uterus) was determined by administering the same steroid combination to castrated male rabbits. I

Prevalence and Factors Associated With Consistent Contraceptive Use among Female Sex Workers in the Greater Banjul Area, The Gambia.

Consistent contraceptive use (CCU) is an important public health intervention for the prevention and spread of STIs, as well as unintended pregnancies and abortions, especially among female sex workers (FSWs). This study determines the prevalence and identifies factors influencing CCU among FSWs in The Gambia. Utilizing a cross-sectional study design with a snowball sampling technique, respondents were recruited from various locations within the Greater Banjul Area. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire with the Research Electronic Data Capture application. Descriptive and logist

The oral pill in the Indonesian Population/Family Planning Program.

The oral pill is the most extensively used contraceptive in Indonesia. Of new users, 64% use the pill, 20% IUDs, 8% injectables, 6% condoms and 2% voluntary sterilization. Since the continuation rate of pill use is low as compared to the other non-permanent methods, i.e. the IUD and the injectables, special steps must be taken in order to reach the goal of the program, i.e. the reduction of the crude birth rate (CBR) to 22/1000 by the year 1990. These special steps involve selecting the best pill for Indonesian women, and determining the best contraceptive combination for each region and for n

Is there any association between hormonal contraceptives and cervical neoplasia in a poor Nigerian setting?

BACKGROUND: The association between hormonal contraception and cervical cancer is controversial. These controversies may hamper the uptake of hormonal contraceptives. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between hormonal contraceptives and cervical neoplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a case-control study in which Pap-smear results of 156 participants on hormonal contraceptives were compared with those of 156 participants on no form of modern contraception. Modern contraception is defined as the use of such contraceptives as condoms, pills, injectables, intrauterine devices, implant

Utilization of family planning services by married Sudanese women of reproductive age.

To explore differences in utilization of family planning services and predisposing factors, we surveyed 601 women from urban and rural areas of Khartoum state. About half were using modern family planning techniques; there were no significant differences in utilization rates between urban and rural settings. Contraceptive pills were the most frequently used modern method (47.7%) followed by intrauterine devices (10.2%) and injections (7.5%). Breastfeeding was used by around 33% of both groups. The rhythm method and withdrawal were more often used by urban women (22.2% and 8.6% respectively) th

Racial and ethnic differences in men's knowledge and attitudes about contraception.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about racial/ethnic differences in men's contraceptive knowledge and attitudes. STUDY DESIGN: We used multivariable logistic regression to examine racial/ethnic differences in contraceptive knowledge and attitudes among 903 men aged 18-29 in the 2009 National Survey of Reproductive and Contraceptive Knowledge. RESULTS: Black and Hispanic men were less likely than Whites to have heard of most contraceptive methods, including female and male sterilization, and also had lower knowledge about hormonal and long-acting reversible methods. They were less likely to know t

Contraception and induced abortions for women of reproductive age married in recent years in rural areas of Shandong, China.

BACKGROUND: In 2001, the Chinese Government published the Population and Family Planning Law which gave citizens the right to know the facts about, and to choose, methods of birth control. Since then, the percentage use of different contraceptive methods has changed. More and more women have been using male condoms for birth control, which has resulted in an increasing prevalence of induced abortions of unintended pregnancies in recent years. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between choice of contraception methods and rates of induced abortion in the rural areas of Shandong. MATERI

Barrier-method contraceptives and pelvic inflammatory disease.

The protective effect of barrier-method contraception against pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) was examined by analyzing data from the Women's Health Study, a large multicenter case-control study. We compared the contraceptive methods used by 645 women hospitalized for initial episodes of PID with the contraceptive methods used by 2,509 control subjects reporting no history of PID. The risk of hospitalization for PID in women currently using barrier methods relative to women using all other methods and to women using no method of contraception was 0.6 (95% confidence limits, 0.5 to 0.9) for b

Contraception for midlife women.

Women wish to continue to be sexually active long after their desire to bear children. The risks associated with unintended pregnancy easily can be avoided by providing women with information about, and access to, contraceptives that are safe and effective. Because fertility naturally declines with age, different contraceptives may be more suitable for women toward the end of their reproductive years than were appropriate at periods of peak fertility. This article discusses the risks and benefits of various contraceptives for midlife women and the implications of this information on nursing pr

Adolescent contraception: nonhormonal methods.

A comparison of the advantages, disadvantages, and costs of each method is presented in Table 1. Barrier methods of contraception offer adolescents protection against both pregnancy and STDs, but innovative approaches are needed to enhance availability and acceptability. Condom use in conjunction with a vaginal spermicide would provide optimal protection. The "female condom" may prove to be an effective alternative. Diaphragms and cervical caps can be prescribed for well-educated, highly motivated adolescents comfortable with insertion and removal. The vaginal contraceptive sponge provides man

Contraception in perimenopause.

Women in their forties are still potentially fertile, and pregnancy in this age group is attended with increased maternal mortality, spontaneous abortion, fetal anomalies and perinatal mortality. Contraception for women in this age group has special risks and benefits; both should be balanced to choose between the different options available. Recent epidemiological and clinical pharmacology studies have indicated the safety of extending the use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) beyond the age of 35 years and up to menopause. Women who have reasons for avoiding COCs can use progestogen-onl

Contraceptive use by female physicians in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about female physicians' personal contraceptive use, and such usage could influence their prescribing patterns. METHODS: We used data from the Women Physicians' Health Study, a large (n = 4501) national study, administered in 1993-1994, on characteristics of female physicians in the United States. RESULTS: These female physicians (ages 30-44 years) were more likely to use contraception than women in the general population (ages 15-44 years); this was true even when the physicians were compared with only other women of high socioeconomic status and when stratified b

Psychosocial Factors Associated With Postpartum Contraceptive Method Use After an Unintended Birth.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether depression, intimate partner violence, and other psychosocial stressors were independently associated with effectiveness level of postpartum contraception among women who recently had an unintended birth. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from PRAMS (the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System) to identify women who had an unintended birth between 2012 and 2015. The effectiveness level of the contraceptive method was coded into one of five categories based on the postpartum contraceptive method that women were using: none, less effective (withdrawal,

Toxic shock syndrome, contraceptive methods, and vaginitis.

To elucidate further the etiology of toxic shock syndrome, we assessed the effects of certain contraceptive methods and recent history of vaginal infection on the incidence of toxic shock syndrome, with confounding effects of other risk factors controlled. We found a strong but imprecise positive association between toxic shock syndrome and tubal ligation (rate ratio = 7.9, 90% confidence interval 1.4 to 42.7). We also observed a negative association with oral contraceptives (rate ratio = 0.49, 90% confidence interval 0.22 to 1.1) and a positive association with a recent history of vaginitis (
