Many women of reproductive age in sub Saharan Africa are not utilizing any contraceptive method which is contributing to the high burden of maternal mortality. This study determined the prevalence, trends, and the impact of exposure to family planning messages (FPM) on contraceptive use (CU) among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We utilized the most recent data from demographic and health surveys across 26 SSA countries between 2013 and 2019. We assessed the prevalence and trends and quantified the impact of exposure to FPM on contraceptive use using augmented inverse pr

From 2001 to 2011, modern contraceptive prevalence in Uganda increased from 18% to 26%. However, modern method use, in particular use of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) and permanent methods (PMs), remained low. In the 2011 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, only 1 of 5 married women used a LARC or PM even though 34% indicated an unmet need for contraception. Between 2011 and 2014, a social franchise and family planning voucher program, supporting 400 private facilities to provide family planning counseling and broaden contraceptive choice by adding LARCs and PMs to the servic

Intimate partner violence is highly prevalent worldwide. Previous research has linked partner violence with reduced contraceptive use, but little is known about the role of non-physical violence in non-Western contexts. Using data from the 2015-16 India Demographic and Health Survey, this study investigates how unequal gender dynamics, marital violence, and coercive control influence unmet need for contraception. Findings suggest that coercive control may play an important role in shaping women's contraceptive use and reproductive autonomy. Health practitioners and advocates should consider co

In an epidemiological survey of 2128 women attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic for the first time and 200 attending two primary health clinics, 26% and 27% respectively were found to have bacterial vaginosis. The prevalence increased significantly with age, being diagnosed in 22.8% (326/1431) of women aged 14-24 years, and in 33.3% (232/697) of those aged greater than or equal to 25 years. Bacterial vaginosis was associated with gonorrhoea and with chlamydial infection, but was negatively associated with genital papillomavirus infection and yeast infection. Women using barrier con

PURPOSE: Hormonal contraceptives alter hormone levels in women and have been linked to alterations in sleep patterns; however, previous studies yielded inconsistent results and lacked generalizability. This study examines hormonal contraceptive use and its impact on sleep outcomes, including sleep duration and sleep disturbances.
METHODS: Women self-reported their sleep patterns and use of contraceptives in the 2017 population-based Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey (n=1,970). Participants were categorized by use of hormonal or non-hormonal contraceptives for the purpose of pr

OBJECTIVE: Worldwide unmet need for contraception remains high at 21.6%. As access to health facilities is one of the potential barriers to contraceptive uptake, the aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of distance to a health facility, according to its service availability, on contraceptive uptake among married Turkish women.
METHODS: To calculate respondents' distance to a health facility, we used data from a household survey conducted among married women, as well as data from a health facility survey conducted among the facilities that were visited for contraceptive services by the

There is growing consensus in the family planning community around the need for novel measures of autonomy. Existing literature highlights the tension between efforts to pursue contraceptive targets and maximize uptake on the one hand, and efforts to promote quality, person-centeredness, and contraceptive autonomy on the other hand. Here, we pilot a novel measure of contraceptive autonomy, measuring it at two Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites in Burkina Faso. We conducted a population-based survey with 3,929 women of reproductive age, testing an array of new survey items within

This study examines the prevalence of contraindications to the use of oral contraceptives in Mexico by sociodemographic characteristics and by whether this family planning method was obtained with or without a doctor's prescription. Using data on smoking behavior and blood-pressure measurements from the 2000 Mexican National Health Survey, the authors found that, under the 1996 World Health Organization (WHO) medical eligibility guidelines, the prevalence of contraindications is low and that no significant differences in contraindications exist at any level between those who obtain oral contra

BACKGROUND: The nonuse of family planning methods remains a major public health concern in the low-and-middle-income countries, especially due to its impact on unwanted pregnancy, high rate of abortion, and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Various demographic and socioeconomic factors have been reported to be associated with the nonuse of family planning methods. In the present study, we aimed at assessing the influence of domestic violence (DV) on contraceptive use among ever married women in Nigeria.
METHODS: Data on 22,275 women aged between 15 and 49 years were collected fro

The goal of the study was to estimate the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) among women of childbearing age taking combined hormonal or combined oral contraception (CHC). A survey that included demographic information, contraceptive use history, the four criteria necessary for RLS diagnosis and an International RLS study group severity scale was distributed to 145 women taking CHC and 169 matched control women not on CHC. A high prevalence of moderate to severe RLS of 20.7% was found. A significant correlation between CHC use and RLS was not found (p = 0.53). RLS severity was not sign

Provision of effective contraception to HIV-positive women of reproductive age is critical to effective management of HIV infection and prevention of both vertical and horizontal HIV transmission in developing countries. This exploratory retrospective study examines contraceptive use during the prolonged post-partum period in a sample of 285 HIV-positive and HIV-negative women who gave birth at four rural maternity clinics in a high HIV-prevalence region in Mozambique. Multivariate analyses show no significant variations by HIV status in contraceptive timing (mean time to first contraceptive u

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of, and factors associated with, use of non-barrier contraception (intrauterine device, hormonal contraceptives, and female sterilization) among female sex workers (FSWs) in three Russian cities.
METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional survey of FSWs aged 18 years and older from Kazan, Krasnoyarsk, and Tomsk was undertaken. Participants had completed a one-time computer-based survey in 2011. Among the 708 with a current contraceptive need, logistic regression was used to evaluate factors associated with use of non-barrier contracepti

INTRODUCTION: Globally, in 2019, there are 1.9 billion women of reproductive age (15-49), of which 1.1 billion have a need for family planning. Of these, 842 million use contraceptives, and 270 million still have an unmet need for contraception. Ethiopia is a low-income country with inadequate access to family planning (FP), especially in the developing regions. The Ethiopian government was striving to increase the number of health facility in order to provide quality maternal care and services. Increasing the modern contraceptive prevalence rate is one of the goals of the government to reduce
