Chloasma, oral contraceptives, and plasma immunoreactive beta-melanocyte-stimulating hormone.

Plasma immunoreactive beta-melanocyte stimulating hormone (beta-MSH) has been measured in patients taking a progestogen-only oral contraceptive and in patients taking combined estrogen-progestogen therapy, of whom some had chloasma. Plasma levels did not differ significantly from those in a group of age- and sex-matched controls. It is concluded that the pigmentation of chloasma is not due to increased plasma concentrations of immunoreactive beta-MSH.

Hormonal contraception decreases bacterial vaginosis but oral contraception may increase candidiasis: implications for HIV transmission.

OBJECTIVE: A 2012 WHO consultation concluded that combined oral contraception (COC) does not increase HIV acquisition in women, but the evidence for depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is conflicting. We evaluated the effect of COC and DMPA use on the vaginal microbiome because current evidence suggests that any deviation from a 'Работает' vaginal microbiome increases women's susceptibility to HIV. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and reanalysed the Hormonal Contraception and HIV Acquisition (HC-HIV) study. Vaginal microbiome outcomes included bacterial vaginosis by Nugent scorin

Comparison of ethinylestradiol pharmacokinetics in three hormonal contraceptive formulations: the vaginal ring, the transdermal patch and an oral contraceptive.

This open-label, randomized study compared the pharmacokinetics of ethinylestradiol (EE) from the contraceptive vaginal ring NuvaRing (15 microg EE/day), the transdermal patch (20 microg EE/day) and a combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing 30 microg EE. After 2-8 weeks of synchronization by COC treatment, subjects were randomized to 21 days of treatment with NuvaRing, patch or COC. Analysis of area under the EE concentration-versus-time curve (AUC) during 21 days of treatment showed that exposure to EE in the NuvaRing group was 3.4 times lower than in the patch group (p < .05) and 2.1 ti

Estrogens, oral contraceptives and hormonal replacement therapy increase the incidence of cutaneous melanoma: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies showed conflicting results on the association between oral contraceptive (OC) use and the development of cutaneous melanoma (CM). We investigated the association between estrogen use and CM incidence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from PHARMO Pharmacy database and PALGA, the pathology database in The Netherlands, were linked. Women, >or=18 years, with a pathology report of a primary CM from 1 January 1991 to 14 December 2004 and >or=3 years of follow-up before CM diagnosis were eligible cases. Controls were matched for age and geographic region. Multivariate logistic

Comparison of the impact of vaginal and oral administration of combined hormonal contraceptives on hepatic proteins sensitive to estrogen.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effects of a new combined hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring (CVR) delivering the nonandrogenic progestin Nestorone (NES) and ethinyl estradiol (EE) on several key estrogen-sensitive hepatic proteins that may be markers for the risk of arterial or venous disease events and on blood pressure (BP). Because the pharmacologic androgenicity of the progestin in these formulations influences the hepatic impact of EE, we selected an oral contraceptive (OC) delivering the androgenic progestin levonorgestrel (LNG) and EE as the comparator. We also investigated the effect of

Clinical, hormonal and metabolic parameters in women with PCOS with different combined oral contraceptives (containing chlormadinone acetate versus drospirenone).

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting 5-10% of women of reproductive age. It is characterized by chronic anovulation leading to menstrual disorders, and increased infertility. The syndrome can also manifest as hirsutism and acne. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to compare, over a duration of 6 months, the effects of drospirenone (DRSP) versus chlormadinone acetate (CMA) containing oral contraceptives (OCs) on clinical, hormonal, and metabolic parameters in 120 PCOS women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 120 women with the diagnosis of PCOS

Does use of estrogens decrease the Breslow thickness of melanoma of the skin? Oral contraceptives and hormonal replacement therapy.

Recently, we showed there was a cumulative dose-dependent association between the use of estrogens and the incidence of cutaneous melanoma (CM). This association was shown for both oral contraceptives (OC) and hormonal replacement therapy (HRT). Some in-vitro studies, however, have suggested a direct inhibitory effect on melanoma tumor growth. Therefore, the use of different types of estrogens, OC and HRT, may be associated with a decreased Breslow thickness. Consequently, the clinical impact of our earlier findings may be limited. In this study, we investigated whether estrogen use (0.5 year)

Effects of hormonal contraceptives on milk volume and infant growth. WHO Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction Task force on oral contraceptives.

WHO conducted a three-centre study in Hungary and Thailand to evaluate the effects of hormonal contraception on lactation and infant growth. Women choosing oral contraceptives were randomly assigned to a combined oral contraceptive containing 30 micrograms ethinyl estradiol and 150 micrograms levonorgestrel (N = 86) or a progestin-only preparation containing 75 micrograms dl-norgestrel (N = 85). Identical packaging and treatment schedules allowed double-blind observation. One-hundred-and-eleven women using no contraception or non-hormonal methods acted as controls. In the two Thai centres 59 w

Exogenous Hormone Use: Oral Contraceptives, Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy, and Health Outcomes in the Nurses' Health Study.

OBJECTIVES: To review the contribution of the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) to our understanding of the complex relationship between exogenous hormones and health outcomes in women. METHODS: We performed a narrative review of the publications of the NHS and NHS II from 1976 to 2016. RESULTS: Oral contraceptive and postmenopausal hormone use were studied in relation to major health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Current or recent oral contraceptive use is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (mainly among smokers), melanoma, and breast cancer, and a low

Satisfaction with a Segesterone Acetate and Ethinyl Estradiol Contraceptive Vaginal System Among Recent Oral Contraceptive or Hormonal Contraceptive Vaginal Ring Users.

Background: We evaluated satisfaction with use of a segesterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol (0.15/0.013 mg) contraceptive vaginal system (CVS) among women who had recently used a monthly contraceptive vaginal ring or contraceptive pills. The CVS is a ring-shaped device used in a 21-days-in/7-days-out regimen for 13 cycles. Materials and Methods: We analyzed post hoc satisfaction responses at cycle 3 and end of study (EOS) from a subset of participants with documented recent use of the monthly ring or daily pills before enrollment in a multinational, phase 3, 13-cycle trial evaluating the CVS

New estrogen-free oral hormonal contraceptive (Estrogene free ill-EFP).

Methods of hormonal contraception are an important tool in the implementation of family planning. Although the primary design of hormonal contraceptives was based on a combination of estrogenic and progestogenic components, the most important component of hormonal contraceptives is the progestin molecule responsible for the anti-gonadotropic effect leading to ovulation inhibition, increased cervical mucus viscosity and endometrial desynchronization. The combination of progestins with estrogens has improved the bleeding profile, but it has increased the risk of cardiovascular complications, par

Cancer incidence attributable to the use of oral contraceptives and hormone therapy in Alberta in 2012.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies are classified as carcinogenic to humans (group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. We sought to estimate the proportion and total number of cancers attributable to the use of oral contraceptives and hormone therapy in Alberta in 2012. METHODS: Population attributable risks were used to estimate the proportion of attributable cases for each associated cancer site. Relative risk estimates were obtained from the most relevant and recent epidemiologic literature. Prevalences of the use of oral contraceptives

Sex differences in the pharmacokinetics of antidepressants: influence of female sex hormones and oral contraceptives.

Women are twice as likely to develop depression as men. Moreover, the symptoms they experience also show sex differences: women tend to develop depression at an earlier age and show more severe symptoms than men. Likewise, the response to antidepressant pharmacotherapy appears to have sex differences. These differences can partially be explained by differences in pharmacokinetic properties (i.e., absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) of drugs in males and females. More recent research has shown that sex hormones may influence all these previously named pharmacokinetic processes.

Plasma fibrinogen in women: relationships with oral contraception, the menopause and hormone replacement therapy.

Plasma fibrinogen was measured in 4837 women aged 25-64 years as part of the Scottish Heart Health Study and Scottish MONICA population surveys. The relationships of oral contraceptive use, the menopause and hormone replacement therapy were examined. Univariate analyses found that women with a history of oral contraceptive use, premenopausal women and those on hormone replacement therapy all had significantly lower fibrinogen levels than women who had never used oral contraceptives, postmenopausal women and non-hormone replacement users respectively. These differences persisted after age stand

Hormone therapy and oral contraceptives in the risk of knee osteoarthritis: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of hormone therapy (HT) and oral contraceptives (OC) with the risk of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: Using data from the UK Biobank, we included 211,345 women (mean 56.5 y) who were free of KOA and had self-reported data on the use of HT and OC at baseline. The outcome was an incident KOA during the follow-up. Cox regression models were used to evaluate the association of the status (never, former, current) and duration of HT and OC use with the risk of KOA. We also assessed the association between specific exogenous sex hormones and the risk of KOA
