In a five-year analysis of an oral contraceptive trial by the Council for the Investigation of Fertility Control venous effects were the third most troublesome group of side-effects with both combined and sequential therapy. Vein complaints, leg cramps, and thrombophlebitis were significantly more frequent with the combined preparations that contained a relatively low dose of progestogen and a high dose of oestrogen than with the other groups tested. The percutaneous route is an effective method for delivery of reproductive hormones. Several transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS) releasing estrogens, progestogens and androgens from patches attached to the skin are currently in clinical use. Antiandrogens, preventing androgen action at target tissue level, are used in the treatment of various androgen-dependent diseases. Pharmacologically these substances have either a steroidal structure, like cyproterone acetate (CPA) and spironolactone (SPL), or a non-steroidal structure, like flutamide (FLU). In women with hyperandrogenism (PCO syndrome, idiopathic hirsutism, acne), clinical benefit may be obtained with CPA, which also displays a progestational activity and an antigonadotropic effect. Sixteen triploid and one tetraploid human abortuses were studied for the origin of polyploidy using a sequential Q- and R-banding technique. Ten triploid abortuses provided informative data: one originated in the maternal first meiotic division; five apparently resulted from dispermy; two derived from an error during either the paternal second meiotic division or the first mitotic division; and the last two were of paternal origin. A liver tumor 35 mm in diameter was found incidentally in a 40-year-old woman who had no history of liver diseases or the use of oral contraceptives. Radiological diagnostics showed the typical findings of liver cell adenoma (LCA). In the out-patient department and antenatal clinic 1000 patients were examined for yeast of the genital tract by the nickerson-medium. In 10.3% of the patients the cultures showed yeast. The wet-mount preparation examination under phase contrast microscopy was compared to the nickerson-medi-m culture. Blood glucose and plasma insulin were measured during an intravenous glucose tolerance test (0.33 g/kg body weight) performed on 75 subjects.
