Brief Adaptation to Astigmatism Reduces Meridional Anisotropy in Contrast Sensitivity.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of visual adaptation to orientation-dependent optical blur on meridional contrast sensitivity function in artificially imposed astigmatism. METHODS: The study adopted a top-up adapt-test paradigm. During the blur adaptation process, the 18 non-astigmatic young adult participants were briefly presented with natural scene images (first trial, 10 minutes; subsequent trials, 6 seconds). Contrast sensitivities for horizontal and vertical gratings at spatial frequencies ranging from 1 to 8 cycles per degree (cpd) were measured immediately before and after adaptati

Effect of vitamin D deficiency on spatial contrast sensitivity function.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Vitamin D has regulatory effects on non-skeletal tissues including neurons. The contrast sensitivity function occurs as a result of interaction between retinal neurons. BACKGROUND: The association between plasma vitamin D deficiency and contrast sensitivity function was investigated. METHODS: Forty-one eyes of 41 subjects with vitamin D deficiency with plasma vitamin D level <20 ng/mL (Group 1), and 30 eyes of 30 subjects without vitamin D deficiency with plasma vitamin D level ≥20 ng/mL (Group 2), were included in this prospective study. OPTEC 6500 was used to measure th

Development and Validation of a Smartphone-based Contrast Sensitivity Test.

PURPOSE: Contrast sensitivity (CS) testing is an important measure of visual function reflecting variations in everyday visual experience in different conditions and helps to identify more subtle vision loss. However, it is only infrequently used. To make this more accessible, we have developed and validated a smartphone-based CS test. METHODS: A new tumbling-E smartphone-based CS test was developed, Peek Contrast Sensitivity (PeekCS). This was field tested and refined through several iterations. Reference standard was a tumbling-E Pelli-Robson CS test (PRCS). The validation study was conduct

Motion processing deficits in migraine are related to contrast sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: There are conflicting reports concerning the ability of people with migraine to detect and discriminate visual motion. Previous studies used different displays and none adequately assessed other parameters that could affect performance, such as those that could indicate precortical dysfunction. METHODS: Motion-direction detection, discrimination and relative motion thresholds were compared from participants with and without migraine. Potentially relevant visual covariates were included (contrast sensitivity; acuity; stereopsis; visual discomfort, stress, triggers; dyslexia). RESU

Higher-order wavefront aberration and letter-contrast sensitivity in keratoconus.

AIMS: To evaluate the relation between higher-order aberration of the eye and contrast sensitivity function in eyes with keratoconus. METHODS: In 22 eyes of 14 patients with keratoconus (age 30.5+/-8.4 years, means+/-SD) and 26 eyes of 13 normal controls (age 29.2+/-6.7 years), ocular higher-order wavefront aberration for a 6-mm pupil was measured with the Hartmann-Schack aberrometer (KR-9000 PW, Topcon). The root mean square (RMS) of third- and fourth-order Zernike coefficients was used to represent higher-order aberrations. The letter-contrast sensitivity was examined using the CSV-1000LV c

Impaired contrast sensitivity among leprosy patients with normal visual acuity.

Contrast sensitivity is a person's ability to identify an object from its background. Patients with normal visual acuity can have reduced contrast sensitivity and may experience trouble in identifying objects at night or moving around in dimly lit places. Contrast sensitivity has never been studied in leprosy patients having normal visual acuity. This study aimed to determine if contrast sensitivity is impaired in leprosy patients who have normal visual acuity and to identify possible associations with demographic, leprosy and ocular characteristics. A hospital based study measuring and compar

[Spatial contrast sensitivity in the differential diagnosis of optic neuritis].

Contrast sensitivity was examined in patients with optic neurites of different etiology. Achromatic and chromatic (red-black, green-black, and blue-black) sinusoidal patterns were presented in succession against the black background at a frequency of 1-22 cycles/degree on the monitor of an IBM computer. Contrast sensitivity was found altered during exacerbation of optic neuritis on both involved and intact eyes, this indicating a possible involvement of the chiasmal region. The authors discuss a new approach to investigation of the mechanisms of impairment of the optic nerve in optic neuritis

Glare and contrast sensitivity before and after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy.

The benefits of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy on visual performance were evaluated in 13 patients with after-cataract following extracapsular cataract extraction. Besides clinical evaluation we measured: visual acuity, letter contrast sensitivity with and without the presence of a circular glare source (glare angle: 8 degrees). Finally, the patients were asked to evaluate their subjective glare problems. In all patients, visual acuity had decreased markedly compared to measurements 2 months after cataract surgery. Before capsulotomy we observed impaired letter contrast sensitivity and increased int

Effect of levodopa treatment on contrast sensitivity in Parkinson's disease.

We studied contrast sensitivity function in 10 parkinsonian patients before and after levodopa treatment. Pretreatment contrast sensitivity function was abnormal in 16 of the 20 eyes. After treatment, only high-frequency loss was observed in 6 eyes. All other types of deficit disappeared under treatment. These changes of contrast sensitivity function following treatment suggest that dopamine is a functional transmitter in the visual pathways.

Contrast sensitivity function as a diagnostic tool in low vision.

In this case report, a patient's visual loss associated with both cataract and senile macular degeneration is described. The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) as well as Retinometer and Visometer findings indicate that the additional visual loss over a year's time was lenticular, rather than retinal, in origin.

Grating test of contrast sensitivity in patients with retrobulbar neuritis.

A retrospective study of 57 patients with retrobulbar neuritis (RBN) was carried out with a new test of contrast sensitivity that utilizes printed sinusoidal gratings. For 21 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, visual abnormality was detected in 18 "affected" eyes and 12 apparently unaffected eyes. For the 36 patients with RBN, abnormalities were detected in 29. In seven of these cases, the grating test showed bilateral impairment. The grating test seemed to be a more sensitive indicator of demyellinization than other psychophysical tests. In 24 of the patients with the least severe di

The contrast sensitivity of retinal ganglion cells of the cat.

1. Spatial summation within cat retinal receptive fields was studied by recording from optic-tract fibres the responses of ganglion cells to grating patterns whose luminance perpendicular to the bars varied sinusoidally about the mean level. 2. Summation over the receptive fields of some cells (X-cells) was found to be approximately linear, while for other cells (Y-cells) summation was very non-linear. 3. The mean discharge frequency of Y-cells (unlike that of X-cells) was greatly increased when grating patterns drifted across their receptive fields. 4. In twenty-one X-cells the relation betwe

Contrast sensitivity and subjective visual disturbances across the psychosis continuum.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective visual disturbances and objective visual deficits are common across the psychosis spectrum. Few investigations have tested them in the same sample to ask whether subjective disturbances may arise from low-level visual processing deficits. This study assessed whether reduced contrast sensitivity (CS), a low-level visual processing deficit in people with schizophrenia (PSZ), may contribute to subjective visual disturbances across the psychosis spectrum. METHODS: PSZ (n = 54) and controls (n = 54) matched for gender, age, and race/ethnicity, together with High PLE (n = 5
