Co-embedding of edges and nodes with deep graph convolutional neural networks.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have significant advantages in dealing with non-Euclidean data and have been widely used in various fields. However, most of the existing GNN models face two main challenges: (1) Most GNN models built upon the message-passing framework exhibit a shallow structure, which hampers their ability to efficiently transmit information between distant nodes. To address this, we aim to propose a novel message-passing framework, enabling the construction of GNN models with deep architectures akin to convolutional neural networks (CNNs), potentially comprising dozens or even h

Inter-patient arrhythmia identification method with RR-intervals and convolutional neural networks.

Objective. The arrhythmia identification method based on the U-net has the potential for fast application. The RR-intervals have been proven to improve the performance of single-heartbeat identification methods. However, because both the heartbeats number and location in the input of the U-net are unfixed, the approach based on the U-net cannot use RR-intervals directly. To solve this problem, we proposed a novel method. The proposed method also can identify heartbeats of four classes, including non-ectopic (N), supraventricular ectopic beat (SVEB), ventricular ectopic beat (VEB), and fusion b

Use of Convolutional Neural Networks to Evaluate Auricular Reconstruction Outcomes for Microtia.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine whether machine learning may be used for objective assessment of aesthetic outcomes of auricular reconstructive surgery. METHODS: Images of normal and reconstructed auricles were obtained from internet image search engines. Convolutional neural networks were constructed to identify auricles in 2D images in an auto-segmentation task and to evaluate whether an ear was normal versus reconstructed in a binary classification task. Images were then assigned a percent score for "normal" ear appearance based on confidence of the classification.

3D augmented fundus images for identifying glaucoma via transferred convolutional neural networks.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is a chronic and irreversible retinopathy threatening the vision of millions of patients around the world. Its early diagnosis and treatment can help to prolong the period of sight deterioration from no visual impairment to blindness, whereas the screening and diagnosis of glaucoma in clinical remains challenging because some key assessment criteria like cup-to-disc ratio is limited by subjective analysis and intra- and inter-observer variability. This paper exploits the potential of new augmented image data of the optic nerve head (ONH) combining with the latest deep learnin

Chromosome-scale inference of hybrid speciation and admixture with convolutional neural networks.

Inferring the frequency and mode of hybridization among closely related organisms is an important step for understanding the process of speciation and can help to uncover reticulated patterns of phylogeny more generally. Phylogenomic methods to test for the presence of hybridization come in many varieties and typically operate by leveraging expected patterns of genealogical discordance in the absence of hybridization. An important assumption made by these tests is that the data (genes or SNPs) are independent given the species tree. However, when the data are closely linked, it is especially i

Alzheimer's disease diagnosis framework from incomplete multimodal data using convolutional neural networks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a severe irreversible neurodegenerative disease that has great sufferings on patients and eventually leads to death. Early detection of AD and its prodromal stage, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) which can be either stable (sMCI) or progressive (pMCI), is highly desirable for effective treatment planning and tailoring therapy. Recent studies recommended using multimodal data fusion of genetic (single nucleotide polymorphisms, SNPs) and neuroimaging data (magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET)) to discriminate AD/MCI from normal contr

Real-time Detection of Aortic Valve in Echocardiography using Convolutional Neural Networks.

BACKGROUND: Valvular heart disease is a serious disease leading to mortality and increasing medical care cost. The aortic valve is the most common valve affected by this disease. Doctors rely on echocardiogram for diagnosing and evaluating valvular heart disease. However, the images from echocardiogram are poor in comparison to Computerized Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan. This study proposes the development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) that can function optimally during a live echocardiographic examination for detection of the aortic valve. An automated detection syst

Personal identification with orthopantomography using simple convolutional neural networks: a preliminary study.

Forensic dental examination has played an important role in personal identification (PI). However, PI has essentially been based on traditional visual comparisons of ante- and postmortem dental records and radiographs, and there is no globally accepted PI method based on digital technology. Although many effective image recognition models have been developed, they have been underutilized in forensic odontology. The aim of this study was to verify the usefulness of PI with paired orthopantomographs obtained in a relatively short period using convolutional neural network (CNN) technologies. Thir

Generalized Prediction of Unconsciousness during Propofol Anesthesia using 3D Convolutional Neural Networks.

Neuroscience has generated a number of recent advances in the search for the neural correlates of consciousness, but these have yet to find valuable real-world applications. Electroencephalography under anesthesia provides a powerful experimental setup to identify electrophysiological signatures of altered states of consciousness, as well as a testbed for developing systems for automatic diagnosis and prognosis of awareness in clinical settings. In this work, we use deep convolutional neural networks to automatically differentiate sub-anesthetic states and depths of anesthesia, solely from one

Dyslexia detection using 3D convolutional neural networks and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dyslexia is a disorder of neurological origin which affects the learning of those who suffer from it, mainly children, and causes difficulty in reading and writing. When undiagnosed, dyslexia leads to intimidation and frustration of the affected children and also of their family circles. In case no early intervention is given, children may reach high school with serious achievement gaps. Hence, early detection and intervention services for dyslexic students are highly important and recommended in order to support children in developing a positive self-esteem and reac

Decision Fusion-Based Fetal Ultrasound Image Plane Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks.

Machine learning for ultrasound image analysis and interpretation can be helpful in automated image classification in large-scale retrospective analyses to objectively derive new indicators of abnormal fetal development that are embedded in ultrasound images. Current approaches to automatic classification are limited to the use of either image patches (cropped images) or the global (whole) image. As many fetal organs have similar visual features, cropped images can misclassify certain structures such as the kidneys and abdomen. Also, the whole image does not encode sufficient local information

Nonlinear System Identification Based on Convolutional Neural Networks for Multiple Drug Interactions.

In heart failure patients, hemodynamics can be regulated by therapeutic drugs. Although the cardiovascular responses to these drugs usually include nonlinearity and drug interactions, it is difficult to identify the characteristics of the dynamics under such conditions. This study, therefore, was aimed at evaluating the technique used for nonlinear system identification based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). As an image i.e., pixel values corresponding to time-course data), CNN can be used to treat the complicated relation between previous inputs (i.e., drug infusions) and outputs i.e.,

Mapping coastal forest retreat using convolutional neural networks and different satellite imagery.

Coastal forests are increasingly threatened by saturated soil and elevated salinity levels resulting from sea level rise, saltwater intrusion, and storm surges. In response to rising salinization and flooding, healthy coastal forests that rely on freshwater (both wetland forests and low-elevation upland forests) are transitioning into landscapes dominated by dead or dying trees, known as ghost forests. Situated among salt-tolerant shrubs and grasses, ghost forests eventually become marshes or open water. Here, our main objective was to quantify the dynamics and pathways of these forest landsca

Efficient convolutional neural networks for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia prediction in computer vision.

A dangerous hematological malignancy, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has a survival rate that is drastically affected by how long it takes to diagnose the disease. Though convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have improved medical imaging, the clinical dependability of most previous research is limited due to their reliance on single models, imbalance in the datasets, and absence of statistical validation. This study proposes an ensemble framework integrating pre-trained CNNs (DenseNet-121, ResNet-34) for feature extraction with machine learning classifiers-Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-N

Active and Inactive Tuberculosis Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks with MLP-Mixer.

Early detection of tuberculosis plays a critical role in effective treatment management. Like active tuberculosis, early identification of inactive forms such as latent or healed tuberculosis is essential to prevent future reactivation. In this study, we developed a deep-learning-based binary classification model to distinguish between active and inactive tuberculosis cases. Our model architecture incorporated an EfficientNet backbone with an MLP-Mixer classification head and was fine-tuned on a dataset annotated by Cheonan Soonchunhyang Hospital. To enhance predictive performance, we applied

Diabetic retinopathy detection using adaptive deep convolutional neural networks on fundus images.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an age-related macular degeneration eye disease problem that causes pathological changes in the retinal neural and vascular system. Recently, fundus imaging is a popular technology and widely used for clinical diagnosis, diabetic retinopathy, etc. It is evident from the literature that image quality changes due to uneven illumination, pigmentation level effect, and camera sensitivity affect clinical performance, particularly in automated image analysis systems. In addition, low-quality retinal images make the subsequent precise segmentation a challenging task for t

Predicting Rail Corrugation Based on Convolutional Neural Networks Using Vehicle's Acceleration Measurements.

This paper presents a deep learning approach for predicting rail corrugation based on on-board rolling-stock vertical acceleration and forward velocity measurements using One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN-1D). The model's performance is examined in a 1:10 scale railway system at two different forward velocities. During both the training and test stages, the CNN-1D produced results with mean absolute percentage errors of less than 5% for both forward velocities, confirming its ability to reproduce the corrugation profile based on real-time acceleration and forward velocity meas
