Risk factors and outcomes associated with nuchal cord. A population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess risk factors and outcomes associated with nuchal cord at birth. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based, case-control study was conducted using linked birth and hospitalization records. Three thousand newborns were randomly selected from all singleton births with nuchal cord as noted on the birth record (n = 5,426) in King County, Washington, 1992-1993. For comparison, 3,000 controls were randomly selected from the 46,952 unaffected singleton births. RESULTS: An increased risk of nuchal cord was associated with induction of labor (odds ratio [OR] adjusted for maternal age and p

Risk factors associated with corrective surgery in congenital scoliosis with tethered cord.

Severe neglected congenital scoliosis with tethered cord presents major difficulties in management. The primary objective of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with corrective scoliosis surgery in neglected cases presenting with severe deformity. Six patients who presented with such problems draw attention to the importance of a staged anterior and posterior approach in order to obtain satisfactory functional results. However, corrective surgery is associated with major neurologic and systemic complications, and every effort should be made to intervene with the progression

Prognostic factors of spinal cord stimulation for chronic back and leg pain.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been used for more than 20 years in the treatment of diverse pain conditions. Although recent studies have identified more clearly those conditions for which SCSoffers a favorable prognosis, the identification of a patient population in whom reasonably long-term success can be expected has been difficult. In an effort to improve patient selection and increase the overall success rate of treatment, we have examined various physical, demographic, and psychosocial variables as predictors of SCS outcome. The study population consisted of 40 patients with chronic l

The impact of immunogenetics and clinical factors on the outcome of unrelated cord blood transplantation: the Milano Cord Blood Bank data.

In this article we examined the role of HLA incompatibility, of KIR C1 and C2 ligands and of other clinical factors on 99 cord blood transplants performed using single units from Milano Cord Blood Bank (MICB). We analyzed the occurrence of rejection, overall patient survival (OS) and occurrence of acute GvHD >or= 2 grade (severe aGvHD). No correlation was found between the end points and the number of HLA-A,-B, -DRB1 and -DQB1 mismatches. Only HLA-C disparities are associated with the occurrence of rejection (P=0.03). Our results showed that the presence of the C1 ligand in the donor decreased

Immunoneutralization of nerve growth factor in lumbosacral spinal cord reduces bladder hyperreflexia in spinal cord injured rats.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effects of intrathecal application of nerve growth factor (NGF) antibodies (Ab) on bladder hyperreflexia in chronic spinalized rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In adult female rats an intrathecal catheter was implanted at the level of the L6 to S1 spinal cord, followed by complete transection of the Th8 to 9 spinal cord. At 10 days after spinalization the intrathecal catheter was connected to an osmotic pump for continuous delivery of vehicle or NGF Ab (10 microg daily) for 2 weeks. Awake cystometry was then performed. NGF levels in the L5 to S1 dorsal root ganglia, L

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances in cord serum of newborns and their potential factors.

The demonstrated developmental and reproductive toxicity of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), coupled with the increasing production and use of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has resulted in progressively higher human exposure levels. This has raised concerns about PFAS exposure levels in the fetus, which is highly susceptible to the potential effects of hazardous environmental chemicals. However, in utero exposure to PFASs and health implications have not been fully characterized in China. To fill this gap, we analyzed 19 PFASs in umbili

[Verticalization as a factor of early rehabilitation in the patients with a spinal cord injury].

The number of days from the spinal cord injury to rehabilitation of the victim has significantly decreased. It means that the rehabilitative treatment begins when the risk of secondary trophic lesions, cardiovascular and respiratory complications is especially high. Training with the use of a tilt-table equipped with the dynamic foot support is considered to be the highly effective method for the prevention or reduction of orthostatic hypotension, impaired ventilation, and pressure sores. This approach makes it possible to influence the patient's motivation for further recovery, decrease the d

[Factors increasing life threat in patients with lesions of the spinal cord].

Mortality of spinal cord trauma has been analysed. An analysis included 3,486 patients treated early after spinal trauma in 1965-1989. Life threat in patients, who underwent trauma to the spinal cord embraces several factors. The most important is are: the level and degree of the lesion to the spinal cord, certain causes precipitating severe lesions to the nervous system, advanced age, and--to some degree--accompanying lesions, way of therapy, advances in medical technology, and intensive treatment technics. Available data indicate that the life of patients admitted to the hospital with sympto

Evaluating neonatal cord serum metabolome in association with adolescent cardiometabolic risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for cardiometabolic disease may have fetal origins, but the biological pathways linking gestational conditions to these risk factors are only partially understood. METHODS: Among 145 Cincinnati-based HOME Study mother-child dyads, we detected 14,384 cord serum metabolic features using liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry. We measured cardiometabolic risk factors, including visceral fat, serum triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), leptin, adiponectin, insulin concentration, glucose, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) at age 12 year

An update on factors affecting umbilical cord care among mothers: A review.

Umbilical cord care remains a critical aspect of newborn health, yet practices vary significantly across different cultures and healthcare settings. This paper aims to provide an updated synthesis of the factors influencing umbilical cord care among mothers. The umbilical cord is a vital link between the fetus and the placenta during pregnancy, but after birth, it requires proper care to prevent infections. Numerous factors influence a mother's approach to umbilical cord care, including cultural beliefs, socio-economic status, access to healthcare information, and traditional practices passed

Factors associated with ultrasound diagnosed neurogenic bladder complications following spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic bladder (NB) is a recognized secondary medical impairment following spinal cord injury (SCI). Ultrasound (US) of the kidneys, ureters and bladder (KUB) has been recommended as a useful, non-invasive surveillance method with good diagnostic sensitivity. This study aims to understand US diagnosed NB complications and identify its associated factors. METHODS: We enrolled all patients referred for SCI rehabilitation from 2012 to 2015 that fulfilled our study criteria. Data that were retrospectively reviewed included demographic and clinical characteristic data; and US KUB

Risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder in persons with spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE: Many of the events that cause spinal cord injury (SCI) are traumatic events that can result in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It therefore appears that most persons with SCI are at risk for developing PTSD. This study retrospectively examined risk factors for PTSD symptoms in a sample of 71 persons with SCI. METHOD: The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV was used to assess full and partial PTSD diagnoses. Self-administered questionnaires were used to measure potential risk factors. RESULTS: Results indicated that 11% of the participants met the criteria for full PTSD, a

Neuroprotection by cord blood neural progenitors involves antioxidants, neurotrophic and angiogenic factors.

Human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) is a valuable source for cell therapy since it confers neuroprotection in stroke animal models. However, the responsible sub-populations remain to be established and the mechanisms involved are unknown. To explore HUCB neuroprotective properties in a PC12 cell-based ischemic neuronal model, we used an HUCB mononuclear-enriched population of collagen-adherent cells, which can be differentiated in vitro into a neuronal phenotype (HUCBNP). Upon co-culture with insulted-PC12 cells, HUCBNP conferred approximately 30% neuroprotection, as evaluated by decreased lacta
