Significance of vestibular organs in problems of weightlessness.

Two important questions concerning the organs of equilibrium are posed by orbital and space flights. The first is whether exposure to weightlessness may evoke symptoms of vestibular origin, and the second is how to prevent symptoms of vestibular origin should it be decided to abolish weightlessness by causing the spacecraft to spin. It is important to determine whether vestibular symptoms are to be ascribed to the otolith apparatus or to the semicircular canals, or to both. During exposure to weightlessness the usual gravitational stimulus to the otolith apparatus is lost, and this reduction i

Squat exercise biomechanics during short-radius centrifugation.

INTRODUCTION: Centrifuge-induced artificial gravity (AG) with exercise is a promising comprehensive countermeasure against the physiological de-conditioning that results from exposure to weightlessness. However, body movements onboard a rotating centrifuge are affected by both the gravity gradient and Coriolis accelerations. The effect of centrifugation on squat exercise biomechanics was investigated, and differences between AG and upright squat biomechanics were quantified. METHODS: There were 28 subjects (16 male) who participated in two separate experiments. Knee position, foot reaction fo

Analysis of posture and eye movement responses to Coriolis stimulation under 1 G and microgravity conditions.

To detect the effect of microgravity on vestibular responses, we conducted Coriolis stimulation experiments at 1 G and μ G. Five men with vision occluded were asked to tilt their head forward while rotating at 100 degrees/sec. Postural changes were recorded by a 3D linear accelerometer, and the distance of upper body movement was derived from recordings of linear acceleration. Eye movements were recorded by a CCD camera. For a second period after commencing head tilt, the upper body moved 10 cm in the direction of inertia input at 1 G, but it moved to the opposite direction at μ G, i.e., 4 cm

Cognitive impairment by spatial disorientation.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining spatial orientation is a biological imperative. When orientation is threatened, attention resources are diverted to regaining orientation, possibly to the detriment of attention required by concurrent tasks. Hence, a factor in aviation mishaps may be the negative impact of disorientation on concurrent performance, such as interpreting instruments. We examined how subjects learn to manage the impact of acute disorienting stimuli on concurrent spatial cognitive tasks. METHODS: Subjects performed the Manikin (MAN) and Choice Reaction Time (CRT) tests under three disorie

[Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo].

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is a common malfunction of the labyrinth, most frequently of the posterior canal, due to clot of debris in the endolymph. The attacks of vertigo are characterised by dependency on position, latency after positioning of the head, short duration, nystagmus, reversibility and fatiguableness. The diagnosis can be based on history, physical examination and provocative tilting of the head as described by Dix and Hallpike. In a typical case further investigations are not necessary. The symptoms often improve spontaneously. Half of the patients can be cured directl

Intersegmental dynamics of 3D upper arm and forearm longitudinal axis rotations during baseball pitching.

The shoulder internal rotation (IR) and forearm pronation (PR) are important elements for baseball pitching, however, how rapid rotations of IR and PR are produced by muscular torques and inter-segmental forces is not clear. The aim of this study is to clarify how IR and PR angular velocities are maximized, depending on muscular torque and interactive torque effects, and gain a detailed knowledge about inter-segmental interaction within a multi-joint linked chain. The throwing movements of eight collegiate baseball pitchers were recorded by a motion capture system, and induced-acceleration ana

Comparing the accuracy of perturbative and variational calculations for predicting fundamental vibrational frequencies of dihalomethanes.

Three dihalogenated methane derivatives (CH2F2, CH2FCl, and CH2Cl2) were used as model systems to compare and assess the accuracy of two different approaches for predicting observed fundamental frequencies: canonical operator Van Vleck vibrational perturbation theory (CVPT) and vibrational configuration interaction (VCI). For convenience and consistency, both methods employ the Watson Hamiltonian in rectilinear normal coordinates, expanding the potential energy surface (PES) as a Taylor series about equilibrium and constructing the wavefunction from a harmonic oscillator product basis. At the

Various anti-motion sickness drugs and core body temperature changes.

INTRODUCTION: Blood flow changes and inactivity associated with motion sickness appear to exacerbate the rate of core temperature decrease during subsequent body cooling. We investigated the effects of various classes of anti-motion sickness drugs on core temperature changes. METHODS: There were 12 healthy male and female subjects (20-35 yr old) who were given selected classes of anti-motion sickness drugs prior to vestibular Coriolis cross coupling induced by graded yaw rotation and periodic pitch-forward head movements in the sagittal plane. All subjects were then immersed in water at 18 de

On the origin of interindividual susceptibility to motion sickness.

According to the otolith asymmetry hypothesis for susceptibility to motion sickness, the interlabyrinthine asymmetry in the otoconial mass, which is normally compensated in the circuity of the vestibular system by appropriate neuronal weighting, becomes disrupted as a result of unfamiliar movement patterns or force environments. Measurements in various species have demonstrated a large scatter in the otoconial mass. As the utricle and saccule have distinct functions in the vestibular system it seems appropriate to deal with these organs separately. Results are presented on mass distribution an

The severity of nauseogenic effect of cross-coupled rotation is proportional to gyroscopic angular acceleration.

METHOD AND RESULTS: Subjects underwent cross-coupled rotation of the head (i.e., Coriolis stimuli) during which the upper body was tilted from side to side during horizontal rotation of the whole body about the Earth-vertical axis. In Experiment 1, the angle between the two axes of cross-coupled rotation was changed to vary the magnitude of gyroscopic angular acceleration without wide variations in Coriolis linear acceleration. The severity of nausea evoked by cross-coupled rotation stimuli varied relative to the magnitude of gyroscopic angular acceleration. It is noteworthy that nausea was no

Salivary total protein and experimental Coriolis sickness.

Symptomatic reporting has been used in quantifying the severity of motion sickness including Coriolis sickness. This study was designed to objectively examine if the dynamic changes of salivary protein concentration relate to the severity of Coriolis sickness. Healthy adults with normal vestibular function underwent a modified Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI) test, utilizing a staircase profile. Salivary samples were obtained prior to stimulation, 15, 30, and 45 min following stimulus onset, and/or upon reaching "nausea-II" endpoint. Total protein concentration tended to rise over

The etiology and drug therapy of kinesia: investigations by means of the coriolis effect under cyclizine.

The typical symptoms of kinesia were produced in 30 healthy test subjects by means of the Coriolis effect and the effect of cyclizine upon them was investigated in a single blind trial. The drug showed a clear effect on the autonomic symptoms (nausea) while there was no evidence of inhibition of the peripheral vestibular function.

Determinants of Motion Sickness in Tilting Trains: Coriolis/Cross-Coupling Stimuli and Tilt Delay.

Faster trains require tilting of the cars to counterbalance the centrifugal forces during curves. Motion sensitive passengers, however, complain of discomfort and overt motion sickness. A recent study comparing different control systems in a tilting train, suggested that the delay of car tilts relative to the curve of the track contributes to motion sickness. Other aspects of the motion stimuli, like the lateral accelerations and the car jitters, differed between the tested conditions and prevented a final conclusion on the role of tilt delay. Nineteen subjects were tested on a motorized 3D tu

Impact of alignment to gravito-inertial force on motion sickness and cardiopulmonary variables.

INTRODUCTION: In tilting trains partial alignment to the gravito-inertial force (GIF) in the curves seems to be the best tilt compensation to reduce the incidence of motion sickness. We investigated the effect of alignment to the GIF on the development of motion sickness during low-frequency horizontal motion. METHODS: There were 12 healthy subjects who participated. The design was a three-period, single-blind, crossover trial, counterbalanced for order. Vestibular coriolis effect differences modeled with three-dimensional linear-angular interactions.

The vestibular coriolis (or "cross-coupling") effect is traditionally explained by cross-coupled angular vectors, which, however, do not explain the differences in perceptual disturbance under different acceleration conditions. For example, during head roll tilt in a rotating chair, the magnitude of perceptual disturbance is affected by a number of factors, including acceleration or deceleration of the chair rotation or a zero-g environment. Therefore, it has been suggested that linear-angular interactions play a role. The present research investigated whether these perceptual differences and

The menstrual cycle and susceptibility to coriolis-induced sickness.

Survey studies on motion sickness susceptibility suggest that females tend to report greater severity in illness and higher incidence of vomiting than males. Menstruation is said to be a contributing factor. A recent study suggested that females were least susceptible to seasickness during ovulation in a "round the world" yacht race. Sixteen subjects (18-36 years old) were exposed to Coriolis cross-coupling stimulation in the laboratory. They were tested once during permenstruation (Day 1-5), ovulation (Day 12-15) and premenstruation (Day 24-28), based on a normalized 28-day cycle, in a random
