Treatment of corneal opacity by planned lamellar keratectomy using the femtosecond laser.

PURPOSE: To report successful vision restoration after lamellar keratectomy using a femtosecond (FS) laser in a patient with superficial corneal opacity that developed after an episode of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. METHODS: A 19-year-old girl with corneal opacity in the left eye was referred to our department for treatment. The opacity was principally located within the superficial anterior cornea. To remove the opacity with minimization of change in the keratometric value, we performed lamellar keratectomy with the aim of creating a 100-μm-thick flap, using an FS laser (IntraLase FS; AMO

Non-trachomatous corneal opacities in the Gambia--aetiology and visual burden.

AIMS: National blindness surveys conducted in the Gambia in 1986 and 1996 showed an increase in blindness and visual impairment from non-trachomatous opacity. This study aimed to investigate the aetiology of these opacities and to assess the resulting visual burden. METHODS: A population-based, randomised blindness survey was conducted in the Gambia in 1996. Patients with visual impairment or blindness were examined by an ophthalmologist with a slit lamp. Causes of corneal opacity were determined as accurately as possible by clinical history and examination. RESULTS: A total of 154 patients

Overexpression of HE4/WFDC2 gene in mice leads to keratitis and corneal opacity.

HE4 is overexpressed in malignant lesions, and elevated serum HE4 levels have been applied as a biomarker for gynecologic cancers. While previous studies have demonstrated the HE4 activities in cancer biology, its role(s) in benign disease is unclear. In current study, we characterize the keratopathy phenotype of transgenic mice with HE4 overexpression (HE4-OE). HE4-OE mice started to display signs of keratitis such as eye-scratching, conjunctiva inflammation, red eyes, periocular secretions, and rough skin/hair loss around the eyes at 3 months after birth. All the mice suffered keratitis, sev

Endoilluminator-aided cataract surgery in eyes with corneal opacity - A modified surgical approach.

BACKGROUND: Cataract and corneal blindness continue to be leading causes of reversible blindness in India. These can co-exist in a multitude of pathologies such as trauma, healed keratitis (old herpetic scar), chronic degenerative changes such as labrador keratopathy, bullous keratopathy, corneal dystrophies etc. Phacoemulsification in such eyes is rewarding to the patient in terms of minimal intervention, less risk of complications owing to reduced open sky time (as in case of combined keratoplasty), and better predictable visual outcomes. Approach to such eyes with poor visualisation is high

Thiol-functionalized collagen patch channelizes TGFβ1- JNK trafficking and reverses corneal stroma opacity.

Pro-regenerative patches are appealing for cornea injuries owing to their robustness, and ease of use in clinical settings. Collagen-based synthetic patches are building blocks for corneal repair, but their cross-linker toxicity, less optical clarity, and deformation instability remain unresolved. In response to these challenges, the study introduces disulfide crosslinked thiolated collagen patches (CSH). Human umbilical cord collagen (UC) comprises abundant lysine; thus, more primary amines are available for thiolation. UC was thiol functionalized, whereby the degree of amine substitution is

MCOA: A Comprehensive Multimodal Dataset for Advancing Deep Learning in Corneal Opacity Assessment.

Corneal opacity remains a major global cause of vision impairment. Its severity is typically assessed subjectively by clinicians using slit lamp examinations of the anterior segment. While anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) provides high-resolution cross-sectional images of the cornea, capturing subtle structural changes, the combination of AS-OCT images with anterior segment photographs delivers a more comprehensive view of the cornea. However, the absence of large-scale, high-quality datasets hinders the development of deep learning algorithms for this purpose. To bridge
