Synaptic disruption is an early pathological sign of the neurodegeneration of Dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). The changes in network synchronization are evident in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) at the group level, but there are very few Magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies regarding discrimination at the individual level. In an international multicenter study, we used MEG and functional connectivity metrics to discriminate MCI from normal aging at the individual person level. A labeled sample of features (links) that distinguished MCI patients from controls in a trainin

The bioelectrical activity of the brain was studied in 86 children in the acute period of tick-borne encephalitis and during convalescence. A total of 183 electroencephalograms were analyzed, predominantly in the subclinical form of the disease (153). The acute stage was characterized by impairments in the bioelectrical activity of the brain in children of all age groups. The severity of the disorders and the form of the disease were closely correlated both according to the data of the baseline EEG and the findings of the functional tests. The changes were mostly manifest in a lowered threshol

Neuronal heterogeneity, characterized by a multitude of spiking neuronal patterns, is a widespread phenomenon throughout the nervous system. In particular, the brain exhibits strong variability among inhibitory neurons. Despite the huge neuronal heterogeneity across brain regions, which in principle could decrease synchronization due to differences in intrinsic neuronal properties, cortical areas coherently oscillate during various cognitive tasks. Therefore, the functional significance of neuronal heterogeneity remains a subject of active investigation. Previous studies typically focus on the

Current theories of schizophrenia (ScZ) posit that the symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions arise from a dysconnection syndrome. However, studies that have examined this hypothesis with physiological data at realistic time scales are so far scarce. The current study employed a state-of-the-art approach using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) to test alterations in large-scale phase synchronization in a sample of n = 16 chronic ScZ patients, 10 males and n = 19 healthy participants, 10 males, during a perceptual closure task. We identified large-scale networks from source reconstructed MEG data using

Understanding how brain stimulation interacts with the brain's internal dynamics is crucial for developing effective neuromodulation protocols. Here we explore the effects of exogenous alternating current (AC) fields across various amplitudes and frequencies on cortical slices expressing spontaneous slow oscillations. Cortical network entrainment occurs within an Arnold tongue-like region centered at the endogenous frequency. However, slightly detuned periodic stimulation of higher frequency leads to a desynchronized regime, revealing a novel approach for disrupting pathological synchronicity.

Symptoms in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are associated with impairment in cognitive control, attention, and action inhibition. We investigated OCD group differences relative to healthy subjects in terms of event-related alpha and beta range synchronization (ERS) and desynchronization (ERD) during a visually cued Go/NoGo task. Subjects were 62 OCD patients and 296 healthy controls (HC). The OCD group in comparison with HC, showed a changed value of alpha/beta oscillatory power over the central cortex, in particular, an increase in the alpha/beta ERD over the central-pariet

Patients suffering from schizophrenia have been characterized by an apparent lack of theta (around 6 Hz) and gamma (>40 Hz) brain oscillatory activity during task execution. The neurocognitive reasons for these abnormal synchronization patterns, however, remain elusive. Recording the electroencephalogramm (EEG) during a selective visual attention task, the current study investigates whether abnormal brain oscillatory resting-state activity in the theta band might account for a lack of task-related brain oscillatory activity in schizophrenia. EEGs were recorded from 26 patients with schizophren

Rest tremor is one of the four main clinical features of Parkinson's disease (PD), besides rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. While rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability can be explained with changes in neurotransmitter concentrations and neuronal activity in basal ganglia, the pathogenesis of parkinsonian tremor is not fully understood. According to the leading hypothesis tremor is generated by neurons or groups of neurons in the basal ganglia which act as central oscillators and generate repetitive impulses to the muscles of the body parts involved. The exact morpholo

Twelve mentally healthy women aged 21-38 years were studied in the state of consciousness and hypnosis. The main study method was electroencephalography with assessment of the spatial synchronization of brain biopotentials (SSBP). Suggestion of high-intensity attention delivered to subjects in the hypnotic state was found to lead to significant reorganization of SSBP, with increases in SSBP between both occipital areas, the right temporal area, and other parts of the brain. The dynamics of brain SSBP in intense attention were opposite in the hypnotic and conscious states, which appears to resu

Injection of fentanyl into the cisterna magna of the brain leads to hypotension and bradycardia in anesthetised dogs. To determine if this effect is related to the recently discovered opiate receptors fentanyl was perfused in increasing concentrations (2.5-20 microgram/ml) through the cerebro-ventricular system in conscious dogs. Blood pressure was recorded continuously from a punctured exteriorised carotid artery; heart rate was derived from the ECG. Baroreflex activity was tested repeatedly by clamping of both common carotid arteries. Cerebral activity was evaluated from the EEG. Perfusion o

The basal ganglia and sensorimotor cortex are essential nodes of a network that supports motor control. In Parkinson's disease, disruptions in this network lead to rigidity and slowness during movement execution. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the basal ganglia has proved effective in alleviating Parkinson's disease-related hypokinetic symptoms, and sensing-enabled neurostimulators now afford the opportunity to detect cortico-basal oscillations during motion. However, the specific contributions of these motor network nodes to chronic, naturalistic movement and the effects of DBS on circuit dy

OBJECTIVE: Bilateral synchronous cortical activity occurs during sleep, attention, and seizures. Canonical models place the thalamus at the center of bilateral cortical synchronization because it generates bilateral sleep spindle oscillations and primarily generalized absence seizures. However, classical studies suggest that the corpus callosum mediates bilateral cortical synchronization.
METHODS: We mapped the spread of right frontal lobe-onset, focal to bilateral seizures in mice and modified it using chemo and optogenetic suppression of motor thalamic nucleus and corpus callosotomy.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique able to induce plasticity phenomena. Although tDCS application has been spreading over a variety of neuroscience domains, the mechanisms by which the stimulation acts are largely unknown. We investigated tDCS effects on cortical gamma synchrony, which is a crucial player in cortical function. We performed a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study on healthy subjects, combining tDCS and magnetoencephalography. By driving brain activity via 40 Hz auditory stimulation during magnetoencephalography,

Absence epilepsy belongs to genetic epilepsies and is characterized by recurrent generalized seizures that are concomitant with alterations of consciousness and associated with cognitive comorbidities. Little is known about the mechanisms leading to occurrence of epileptic seizures (i.e. epileptogenesis) and, in particular, it remains an open question as to whether neuronal hypersynchronization, a key feature in seizure initiation, could result from aberrant structural connectivity within neuronal networks endowing them with epileptic properties. In the present study, we addressed this questio

During moments involving selective attention, the thalamus orchestrates the preferential processing of prioritized information by coordinating rhythmic neural activity within a distributed frontoparietal network. The timed release of neuromodulators from subcortical structures dynamically sculpts neural synchronization in thalamocortical networks to meet current attentional demands. In particular, noradrenaline modulates the balance of cortical excitation and inhibition, as reflected by thalamocortical alpha synchronization (~8-12 Hz). These neuromodulatory adjustments facilitate the selective

Musical training is associated with increased structural and functional connectivity between auditory sensory areas and higher-order brain networks involved in speech and motor processing. Whether such changed connectivity patterns facilitate the cortical propagation of speech information in musicians remains poorly understood. We here used magnetoencephalography (MEG) source imaging and a novel seed-based intersubject phase-locking approach to investigate the effects of musical training on the interregional synchronization of stimulus-driven neural responses during listening to naturalistic c

Composite stimulation techniques are presented here which are based on a soft (i.e., slow and mild) reset. They effectively desynchronize a cluster of globally coupled phase oscillators in the presence of noise. A composite stimulus contains two qualitatively different stimuli. The first stimulus is either a periodic pulse train or a smooth, sinusoidal periodic stimulus with an entraining frequency close to the cluster's natural frequency. In the course of several periods of the entrainment, the cluster's dynamics is reset (restarted), independently of its initial dynamic state. The second sti

In neuroscience, phase synchronization (PS) is a crucial mechanism that facilitates information processing and transmission between different brain regions. Specifically, global phase synchronization (GPS) characterizes the degree of PS among multivariate neural signals. In recent years, several GPS methods have been proposed. However, they primarily focus on the collective synchronization behavior of multivariate neural signals, while neglecting the structural difference between oscillator networks. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a method named total correlation-based synchronization

INTRODUCTION: The activating role of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep on epileptic cortex and conversely, the seizure remission brought about by antiepileptic medications, has been attributed to their effects on neuronal synchrony. This study aims to understand the role of neural synchrony of NREM sleep in promoting interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in patients with epilepsy (PWE) by assessing the peri-IED phase synchrony during awake and sleep states. It also studies the role played by antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on EEG desynchronization in the above cohort.

This study addressed the role of subcortical brain structures in temporal adaptation and anticipation during sensorimotor synchronization. The performance of patients with cerebellar or basal ganglia lesions was compared with that of healthy control participants on tasks requiring the synchronization of drum strokes with adaptive and tempo-changing auditory pacing sequences. The precision of sensorimotor synchronization was generally lower in patients relative to controls (i.e., variability of asynchronies was higher in patients), although synchronization accuracy (mean asynchrony) was commens
