Corticosterone plays an important role in feeding behavior. However, its mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of corticosterone on feeding behavior. In this study, cumulative food intake was increased by acute corticosterone administration in a dose-dependent manner. Administration of the 5-HT2c receptor agonist m-chlorophenylpiperazin (mCPP) reversed the effect of corticosterone on food intake. The anorectic effects of mCPP were also blocked by the 5-HT2c receptor antagonist RS102221 in corticosterone-treated mice. Both corticosterone and mCP

Food intake depends on a tightly controlled interplay of appetite hormones and the enteric (ENS) and central nervous system. Corticosterone (CORT) levels, which are mainly studied with regard to stress, are also increased during fasting. However, the role of CORT in the ENS remains elusive. Therefore, we investigated whether CORT modulates activity of enteric neurons and whether its intracellular regulator, 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) type 1, is present in the myenteric plexus, using immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR. Effects of CORT on neuronal activity and expression of neuronal ma

For animals in the wild, survival depends on being able to detect and respond rapidly to danger by switching from risky (e.g. conspicuous courtship) to survival-oriented behaviors. Very little is known about the hormonal or neuroendocrine mechanisms that control the rapid switch in behavioral state that occurs when an animal detects threats or other stressors. Prior studies with rough-skinned newts (Taricha granulosa), an amphibian model, found that stress-induced suppression of male sexual behaviors (amplectic clasping) involves corticosterone (CORT) and that this steroid hormone uses a novel

The effects of adrenalectomy and chronic corticosterone treatment on sexual behavior in the ovariectomized female rat were investigated. The serotonergic type 2A (5-HT2A) receptor-mediated behavior 'wet dog shakes' (WDS) was measured concurrently. In Experiment 1, adrenalectomy reduced the frequency of WDS following the administration of the 5-HT(2A/2C) receptor agonist 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI) but had no effect on spontaneous WDS. In Experiment 2, chronic corticosterone treatment increased DOI-induced WDS in both adrenalectomized and sham-adrenalectomized rats. In E

Leptin, a hormone secreted by adipose tissue in proportion to body adiposity, is proposed to be involved in the central nervous regulation of food intake and body weight. In addition, evidence is emerging that leptin regulates neuroendocrine and metabolic functions as well, presumably via its action in the central nervous system (CNS). To investigate this regulatory effect of leptin, we infused 3.5 microg of human leptin directly into the third cerebral ventricle (i3vt) of lean male Long-Evans rats, 90 min before the onset of their dark phase. Before and after infusion, blood samples were with

Growing parent stock (breeders) of meat-type chickens (broilers), subjected routinely to chronic food restriction, show increased pacing before a single daily meal and increased drinking and pecking at non-food objects (oral stereotypies) afterwards. Expression of these activities is correlated positively with the level of restriction imposed, and is thought to be controlled mainly by central dopaminergic mechanisms. There is published evidence that glucocorticoids can amplify dopamine mediated behaviours, and this paper describes four experiments examining the relationship between corticoster

To examine hormonal response patterns to various stresses, urinary excretion of catecholamines and corticosterone was measured in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto normotensive rats (WKY) under the following conditions: immobilization, restriction to a small space, introduction of new rats, and noise exposure. In WKY rats, immobilization caused a marked increase in urinary corticosterone, adrenaline and noradrenaline and a decrease in dopamine excretion. Restriction to a small space induced a less pronounced but still obvious increase in adrenaline and corticosterone and a

Single Comb White Leghorn hens were used to determine the effects of adaptation to handling on circulating corticosterone concentrations. Blood samples were collected either by brachial venipuncture (BVP) or by brachial vein cannula (BVC). Half of the birds in each group were first adapted for 1 week to the handling procedure. Adaptation to handling resulted in reduced plasma corticosterone concentrations.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening inherited disease related to a mutation in the CFTR gene, that leads to serious health complications such as chronic pulmonary infections, pancreatic insufficiency, dysfunction of the sweat glands and reproductive system. For the first time, we have described the profile of corticosterone and androgen metabolites in urine, as well as the activity of enzymes involved in steroid genesis and metabolism in people with CF, using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A significant reduction in the excretion of most of the measured metabolites in CF was foun

In both captive and free-living birds, the emergence of the migratory phenotype is signalled by rapid and marked increases in food intake and fuelling, as well as changes in amount of nocturnality or migratory restlessness. The metabolic hormone corticosterone and, as more recently suggested, the gut-derived hormone ghrelin have been suggested to play a role in mediating such phenomenal phenotypic flexibility given that they both regulate fuel metabolism and locomotion across vertebrate taxa. Here, using the Common quail (Coturnix coturnix) as our study species, we induced autumn migration fol

Previous studies reported the neuroprotective effects of formononetin (FMN), however, whether it has antidepressant-like effects have not been reported. To evaluate the antidepressant-like effects of FMN, a mice model of depression was established by chronic corticosterone (CORT) injection. The serum corticosterone levels and hippocampal protein expression were detected by ELISA and Western blot. Nissl staining was used to observe the damage of hippocampal neurons and immunofluorescence was used to observe the neurogenesis in the hippocampus. Our results showed that FMN significantly increased

The adrenal steroid corticosterone has profound effect on the structure and function of the hippocampus. Probably as a result of that, it modulates memory formation. In this review, the question is addressed if the corticosterone effects on memory processes are mediated by alterations in the expression of the neurotrophin Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus. First, studies are described investigating the effect of corticosterone on BDNF expression in the rat hippocampus. It appears that corticosterone suppresses the BDNF expression at the mRNA and protein level in a sub

Osteocalcin (OC), an extracellular calcium-binding protein of bone origin, is synthesized by osteoblasts and binds with high specificity to bone mineral crystals. A small, but relatively consistent portion of newly synthesized OC which is released to circulation has been well correlated with histological indices of osteoblastic activity. Synthesis of OC is regulated by numerous hormones including glucocorticoids. We previously reported that mild mental stressors such as cage change or cold exposure decreased rat plasma OC by up to 40% within 1 h. A similar response was induced in a time- and d

This study tests the hypothesis, in A6 epithelia, that 1) corticosterone stimulates active Na+ transport (short-circuit current, Isc) by an additional receptor mechanism to the type I (mineralocorticoid) and type II (glucocorticoid) mechanisms shared with aldosterone (Aldo) and 2) that the agonist may be 6 beta-OH-corticosterone made in the effector cell. The dose-response relationship of corticosterone at 24 h resolves into two components, by curve fitting, with a 50% effective concentration (EC50) for 10% of maximum Isc stimulation of 2 X 10(-9) M and an EC50 for the other 90% of 3 X 10(-7)

Beyond a certain level of parasite density, trichinellosis of the rat is accompanied by high plasma corticosterone, the intensity of which depends on that of the parasitism. It develops in two phases: a primary phase, starting early on (40 hours after infestation), is characterized by a more or less high degree of plasma corticosterone, varying according to parasite intensity. It stops around the fifteenth day. The second phase develops from approximately the third week onwards, and can last five or six months; it occurs even when the primary phase is not pronounced. The discussion points to p

Stressors experience early in life by animals may have carry over impacts on life-traits over the life cycle. Accelerated telomere attrition induced by stress during development and growth could play a role in such delayed effects. Among stressors, exposure to chemicals may modify telomere dynamic but, to date, the trends evidenced between exposure and telomere shortening remains inconsistent. Moreover, the role of corticosterone as a possible mediator of chemical impact on telomere is not yet clearly established. Here, we investigated in wild populations of Red kite whether nestling exposure

Increased glucocorticoid concentrations have been shown to favor resilience towards autoimmune phenomena. Here, we addressed whether experimentally induced elevations in circulating glucocorticoids mitigate the abnormalities exhibited by an experimental model of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus (PANDAS). This is a pathogenic hypothesis linking repeated exposures to Group-A-beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GAS), autoantibodies targeting selected brain nuclei and neurobehavioral abnormalities. To persistently elevate glucocorticoid concentrations, we sup

Exposure to chronic stress often elevates basal circulating glucocorticoids during the circadian nadir and leads to exaggerated glucocorticoid production following exposure to subsequent stressors. While glucocorticoid production is primarily mediated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, there is evidence that the sympathetic nervous system can affect diurnal glucocorticoid production by direct actions at the adrenal gland. Experiments here were designed to examine the role of the HPA and sympathetic nervous system in enhancing corticosterone production following chronic stress. R
