Corynebacterium nigricans sp. nov.: proposed name for a black-pigmented Corynebacterium species recovered from the human female urogenital tract.

Six independent isolates of an unusual black-pigmented Corynebacterium species (strains CN-1, CN-2, CN-3415, W70124, 91-0032, and 92-0360) were recovered from the human female urogenital tract. Four of the six source patients had complications of pregnancy, including spontaneous abortion, preterm labor, and low amniotic fluid volume at the time of the pathogen isolation. One isolate was recovered from a vaginal ulcer. All six strains yielded black-pigmented colonies on sheep blood agar, chocolate agar, and colistin-nalidixic acid agar after 24 to 48 h of incubation at 35 degrees C. The dry, ad

Screening for Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Corynebacterium ulcerans in patients with upper respiratory tract infections 2007-2008: a multicentre European study.

Diphtheria is now rare in most European countries but, when cases do arise, the case fatality rate is high (5-10%). Because few countries continue to routinely screen for the causative organisms of diphtheria, the extent to which they are circulating amongst different European populations is largely unknown. During 2007-2008, ten European countries each screened between 968 and 8551 throat swabs from patients with upper respiratory tract infections. Six toxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae were identified: two from symptomatic patients in Latvia (the country with the highest report

Antimicrobial Activity of Corynebacterium amycolatum ICIS 53 and Corynebacterium amycolatum ICIS 82 Against Urogenital Isolates of Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Intermicrobial interactions play a key role in the regulation of microbial populations and the colonization of various ecological niches. In the present study, we assessed the effect of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) from the vaginal isolates Corynebacterium amycolatum ICIS 53 and Corynebacterium amycolatum ICIS 82 on urogenital test strain biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus. Our studies showed that the CFSs of both C. amycolatum strains significantly reduced biofilm formation and disrupted preformed S. aureus biofilms. Pretreatment with C. amycolatum ICIS 53 or C. amycolatum ICIS 82 CF

Corynebacterium diphtheriae Outbreak in Migrant Populations in Europe.

BACKGROUND: A surge of cases of Corynebacterium diphtheriae infection was observed in reception centers for migrants in Europe beginning in the summer of 2022. Most of the cases were cutaneous, although some respiratory cases as well as one death were reported. A pan-European consortium was created to assess the clinical, epidemiologic, and microbiologic features of this outbreak. METHODS: We assessed cases of toxigenic C. diphtheriae infection that were reported in 10 European countries from January through November 2022. Data regarding countries of origin and transit routes were obtained fr

Contribution of the Mobilome to the Configuration of the Resistome of Corynebacterium striatum.

Corynebacterium striatum, present in the microbiota of human skin and nasal mucosa, has recently emerged as a causative agent of hospital-acquired infections, notable for its resistance to multiple antimicrobials. Its mobilome comprises several mobile genetic elements, such as plasmids, transposons, insertion sequences and integrons, which contribute to the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes. This study analyzes the contribution of the C. striatum mobilome in the transfer and dissemination of resistance genes. In addition, integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs), essential in th

Identification and characterization of zinc importers in Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the causative agent of diphtheria, a severe respiratory disease in humans. C. diphtheriae colonizes the human upper respiratory tract, where it acquires zinc, an essential metal required for survival in the host. While the mechanisms for zinc transport by C. diphtheriae are not well characterized, four putative zinc ABC-type transporter loci were recently identified in strain 1737: iutABCD/E (iut), znuACB (znu), nikABCD1 (nik1), and nikABCD2 (nik2). A mutant deleted for all four loci (Δ4) exhibited similar growth to that of the wild-type strain in a zinc-limited

Genomic Epidemiology of Corynebacterium diphtheriae in New Caledonia.

An increasing number of isolations of Corynebacterium diphtheriae has been observed in recent years in the archipelago of New Caledonia. We aimed to analyze the clinical and microbiological features of samples with C. diphtheriae. All C. diphtheriae isolates identified in New Caledonia from May 2015 to May 2019 were included. For each case, a retrospective consultation of the patient files was conducted. Antimicrobial susceptibility phenotypes, tox gene and diphtheria toxin expression, biovar, and the genomic sequence were determined. Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST), 7-gene MLS

Prepatellar Bursitis with Abscess due to Corynebacterium ulcerans.

Corynebacteria are ubiquitous and reside as skin and mucosa commensals in animals. They are considered contaminants in clinical specimens, but significant clinical data points to their virulence and pathogenic potential over the last two decades. Corynebacteria can cause both community-acquired and nosocomial infections. Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C. diphtheriae) responsible for diphtheria has declined over the previous two decades with an increase in a similar clinical syndrome by Corynebacterium ulcerans (C. ulcerans) in Europe. As per recent studies, C. ulcerans shares similar virulence f

Corynebacterium amycolatum: an unusual cause of corneal ulcer.

Here, we report a novel case of corneal ulcer in a 72-year-old patient with diabetes caused by Corynebacterium amycolatum This organism should not be ignored as a harmless commensal whenever it is isolated in pure form in repeat cultures of the specimen along with a leucocyte reaction in direct microscopic examination. Moreover, this organism is multidrug-resistant, so species identification of diphtheroids is important to start appropriate antibiotic therapy. There are very few published reports of ocular infection and none of corneal ulcer by this organism.

Population genomics and antimicrobial resistance in Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the agent of diphtheria, is a genetically diverse bacterial species. Although antimicrobial resistance has emerged against several drugs including first-line penicillin, the genomic determinants and population dynamics of resistance are largely unknown for this neglected human pathogen. METHODS: Here, we analyzed the associations of antimicrobial susceptibility phenotypes, diphtheria toxin production, and genomic features in C. diphtheriae. We used 247 strains collected over several decades in multiple world regions, including the 163 clinical isolates

Prevalence of Corynebacterium ulcerans in dogs in Osaka, Japan.

Diphtheria-like human illness caused by Corynebacterium ulcerans is an emerging threat in developed countries, with incidence sometimes higher than that of diphtheria caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Companion animals are considered a potential source of human infections. In order to determine the prevalence of C. ulcerans among dogs, we performed a screening for the bacterium in 583 dogs in the custody of the Osaka Prefectural government. Forty-four dogs (7.5 %) were positive for the bacterium, although they did not show any clinical symptoms. All bacterial isolates showed resistance or

Pericarditis and pleuritis caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis in a horse.

A 13-year-old Oldenburg mare was evaluated for lethargy and signs of mild colic. Pericardial tamponade caused by fibrinoeffusive pericarditis was diagnosed. Cytologic and biochemical evaluation of pericardial fluid was consistent with a septic effusion. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, the cause of pigeon fever, was identified by bacteriologic culture of pericardial fluid. Drainage and lavage of the pericardial sac, local (intrapericardial) and systemic antimicrobial treatment, and subsequent corticosteroid treatment resulted in a successful outcome in this horse. To the authors' knowledge,

Corynebacterium minutissimum bacteremia in an immunocompetent host with cellulitis.

Since its original description in 1961, Corynebacterium minutissimum, the causative agent of erythrasma, has rarely been associated with extracutaneous disease. We report a case of cellulitis and bacteremia due to C. minutissimum. We discuss the treatment of C. minutissimum infection and describe the clinical settings in which isolation of Corynebacterium species from blood cultures should be considered significant.

Corynebacterium haemolyticum septicemia in a girl with mononucleosis infectiosa.

Many isolates of Corynebacterium are dismissed as contaminants by technicians and microbiologists in the laboratory. We report the isolation of Corynebacterium haemolyticum from the blood of a 15-year-old girl with mononucleosis infectiosa and conclude that this species should be considered as a possible pathogen and not only be regarded as innocent bacteria, particularly in the immunocompromised host.

Studies of an outbreak of Corynebacterium equi pneumonia in foals.

Five out of 6 foals between 2 and 4 months old, on a ranch in northern California, developed pneumonia within a 3 week period in June and July 1978. Corynebacterium equi was recovered from each of the 5 foals by transtracheal aspiration. Clinical signs were variable but included increased respiratory rate, fever, cough, nasal discharge, harsh airway sounds over middle sized airways and wheezing over small airways. Cyanosis was present in the most severely affected foal. Radiographic findings included diffusely increased interstitial and peribronchial densities, areas of consolidation and, in 3

Corynebacterium vaginale (Haemophilus vaginalis) in women with leukorrhea.

Corynebacterium vaginale was recovered from vaginal-cervical swab specimens in 164 of 288 women with leukorrhea and in four of 30 women without signs or symptoms of lower genital tract infection. The amount and character of the leukorrhea observed in association with C. vaginale infection were variable; in typical cases the discharge had the appearance of a thin paste. In a series of 100 patients studied to determine the apparent causes of leukorrhea, noninfectious causes were inferred in seven patients and no cause ascertained in six. Non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae in a boarding school.

A non-toxigenic strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae var. gravis was isolated from 31 boys during an outbreak of sore throats at a boarding school of 15 staff and 134 pupils. Despite the non-toxigenicity of the strain involved, conventional isolation procedures were observed and all boys at the school were treated with antibiotics. Restrictions on the school were only relaxed when no further carriers were detected. The rationale of such management of an episode involving a non-toxigenic strain is discussed.
