Sex-specific behavioral feedback modulates sensorimotor processing and drives flexible social behavior.

How the brain enables individuals to adapt behavior to their partner is key to understanding social exchange. For example, courtship behavior involves sensorimotor processing of signals that can result in behavioral dialog between partners, such as stereotyped movements and singing. The courtship behavior of Drosophila melanogaster males with their partners, which are usually female but can also be male, involves singing. To investigate how behavioral feedback and sensorimotor processing contribute to flexible social interactions, we compared the courtship behavior and singing of male D. melan

Courting and noncourting male red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis: plasma melatonin levels and the effects of pinealectomy.

Previous studies found that pinealectomy of male Canadian red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) in the autumn, before prolonged exposure to low temperatures (hibernation), significantly impaired the expression of courtship behavior upon emergence in the spring. Additionally, pinealectomized animals with a disrupted diel cycle of plasma melatonin did not court while those exhibiting a more typical diel pattern did. These results suggested that the pineal gland functions in the transduction of a temperature cue which stimulates courtship. To test this hypothesis, we pinealecto

Or47b plays a role in Drosophila males' preference for younger mates.

Reproductive behaviour is important for animals to keep their species existing on Earth. A key question is how to generate more and healthier progenies by choosing optimal mates. In Drosophila melanogaster, males use multiple sensory cues, including vision, olfaction and gustation, to achieve reproductive success. These sensory inputs are important, yet not all these different modalities are simultaneously required for courtship behaviour to occur. Moreover, the roles of these sensory inputs for male courtship choice remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that males court younger females

Regulation of olfactory-based sex behaviors in the silkworm by genes in the sex-determination cascade.

Insect courtship and mating depend on integration of olfactory, visual, and tactile cues. Compared to other insects, Bombyx mori, the domesticated silkworm, has relatively simple sexual behaviors as it cannot fly. Here by using CRISPR/Cas9 and electrophysiological techniques we found that courtship and mating behaviors are regulated in male silk moths by mutating genes in the sex determination cascade belonging to two conserved pathways. Loss of Bmdsx gene expression significantly reduced the peripheral perception of the major pheromone component bombykol by reducing expression of the product

Elements of the fruitless locus regulate development of the muscle of Lawrence, a male-specific structure in the abdomen of Drosophila melanogaster adults.

A genetically defined element of the fruitless (fru) locus in Drosophila melanogaster regulates the development of a male-specific muscle spanning the fifth abdominal segment in adult males, the 'muscle of Lawrence' (MOL). The region is defined by two cytological deletions, each with a breakpoint that co-maps with previously described mutant courtship phenotypes at cytogenetic interval 91B on the third chromosome. Flies that carry both of these deletions are viable, and males express abnormalities of courtship similar to those caused by the fru inversion breakpoint at 91B. In addition, these d

Perching mate-locating strategy in Paysandisia archon (Lepidoptera: Castniidae): behavioral and morpho-physiological investigations.

We studied Paysandisia archon (Burmeister) (Lepidoptera: Castniidae: Castniinae) courtship behavior to provide a detailed qualitative and quantitative description of male and female behaviors. Moreover, to investigate the role of antennal olfaction and visual stimuli in mate-recognition, bioassays with antennectomized adults and dummies were performed. To assess the presence of a pheromone gland in the ovipositor, morphological (using light and scanning electron microscopic techniques), electrophysiological, and chemical investigations were carried out. We observed perching mate-locating behav

Male dwarf chameleons assess risk of courting large, aggressive females.

Conflict between the sexes has traditionally been studied in terms of costs of mating to females and female resistance. However, courting can also be costly to males, especially when females are larger and aggressively resist copulation attempts. We examined male display intensity towards females in the Cape dwarf chameleon, Bradypodion pumilum, in which females are larger than males and very aggressive. We assessed whether aggressive female rejection imposes potential costs on males and whether males vary their display behaviour with intensity of female rejection, female size or relative size

Two Brain Pathways Initiate Distinct Forward Walking Programs in Drosophila.

An animal at rest or engaged in stationary behaviors can instantaneously initiate goal-directed walking. How descending brain inputs trigger rapid transitions from a non-walking state to an appropriate walking state is unclear. Here, we identify two neuronal types, P9 and BPN, in the Drosophila brain that, upon activation, initiate and maintain two distinct coordinated walking patterns. P9 drives forward walking with ipsilateral turning, receives inputs from central courtship-promoting neurons and visual projection neurons, and is necessary for a male to pursue a female during courtship. In co

Behavior of free-ranging and captive American kestrels under electromagnetic fields.

Wild birds, particularly raptors, commonly use electrical transmission structures for nesting, perching, hunting, and roosting. Consequently, birds are exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). The amount of time that wild reproducing American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were exposed to EMFs was determined, and the effects of EMFs on the behavior of captive reproducing kestrels were examined. Wild kestrels were exposed to EMFs for 25% to 75% of the observed time. On a 24-h basis, estimated EMF exposure of wild kestrels ranged from 71% during courtship, to 90% during incubation, similar to that

The effects of exogenous neuropeptide Y on feeding and sexual behavior in the red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis).

Actively courting adult male red-sided garter snakes were injected with one of two dosages of neuropeptide Y (NPY) or saline into the third cerebral ventricle. Courtship and feeding responses were assessed prior to surgery, 4-5 h and 24 h post-surgery. Feeding behavior was tested by the presentation of a favored food, an earthworm. NPY significantly reduced courtship behavior scores at both low (0.16 nmol) and high (0.77 nmol) doses 4-5 h after surgery. Snakes also took much longer to reach the criterion courtship score at the high dose. Feeding occurred only in snakes treated with NPY. At the

Diversification of takeout, a male-biased gene family in Drosophila.

The display of courtship behavior has evolved in response to sexual selection driven by competition to obtain mates. Sexually dimorphic mate selection rituals are likely controlled at least in part by genes with sex-biased patterns of expression. In Drosophila melanogaster, male courtship behavior has been well described and consists of a series of stereotyped behaviors. The takeout gene is predominantly expressed in males and affects male courtship behavior. In this study, we examine the patterns of expression and evolution in takeout and the family of related proteins. We show that a number

Social performance reveals unexpected vocal competency in young songbirds.

Vocal ontogeny in songbirds provides a good model for understanding how complex motor behavior, including speech, is learned. For birdsong, as for other motor learning, it has generally been assumed that a subject's motor output at any point during learning represents what the subject has learned to produce by that time. Here, we show, however, that juvenile zebra finches partway through song learning, singing immature song, are capable of producing song with much more mature properties, depending on the behavioral context. In these birds, we were able to elicit courtship (female-directed) son

Functional dissection of the neural substrates for sexual behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster.

The male-specific Fruitless proteins (FruM) act to establish the potential for male courtship behavior in Drosophila melanogaster and are expressed in small groups of neurons throughout the nervous system. We screened ∼1000 GAL4 lines, using assays for general courtship, male-male interactions, and male fertility to determine the phenotypes resulting from the GAL4-driven inhibition of FruM expression in subsets of these neurons. A battery of secondary assays showed that the phenotypic classes of GAL4 lines could be divided into subgroups on the basis of additional neurobiological and behaviora

Males disposed to commit rape.

The hypothesis that the preferential rape pattern belongs among the courtship disorders like voyeurism, exhibitionism, and toucheurism was tested. The study consisted of two experiments. The first compared 11 rape-prone males, who were most likely afflicted with the preferential rape pattern, with 11 sexually normal controls on penile response to narratives that depicted scenes in which the individual engaged in behavior typical of voyeurs, exhibitionists, or toucheurs. Narratives depicting normal tactile interaction (short of intercourse) with a genuinely participating woman, normal intercour

[Behavioral Features and Neural Basis of Vocal Communication in Mice].

Mice use ultrasonic vocalizations beyond the range of human hearing to achieve social communication. This review summarizes the behavioral features of mouse ultrasonic vocalizations, including pup calls, male courtship vocalizations, and vocalizations emitted during female-female and male-male interactions. It also compares mouse vocalizations with rat ultrasonic calls and bird songs. Finally, this review discusses male courtship vocalizations as an index of sexual motivation and emotional expression, and outlines their neuroendocrine regulation through sex hormones and neural circuits centere

dissatisfaction, a gene involved in sex-specific behavior and neural development of Drosophila melanogaster.

Few mutations link well defined behaviors with individual neurons and the activity of specific genes. In Drosophila, recent evidence indicates the presence of a doublesex-independent pathway controlling sexual behavior and neuronal differentiation. We have identified a gene, dissatisfaction (dsf), that affects sex-specific courtship behaviors and neural differentiation in both sexes without an associated general behavioral debilitation. Male and female mutant animals exhibit abnormalities in courtship behaviors, suggesting a requirement for dsf in the brain. Virgin dsf females resist males dur

Concentrations of prolactin and luteinizing hormone in plasma of doves in relation to incubation and development of the crop gland.

The concentrations of prolactin and LH were measured in the plasma of male and female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) during the breeding cycle. Prolactin concentrations were low during courtship and early incubation but increased markedly (P less than 0.01 in both sexes) between days 7 and 15 of incubation, during the period of rapid growth of the crop sac. Levels remained raised for 4 days after the young had hatched but then declined as the crop sacs gradually regressed. These observations showed that concentrations of prolactin were high at the time when the crop sacs were proliferating

Comparative exploration of mammalian deafness gene homologues in the Drosophila auditory organ shows genetic correlation between insect and vertebrate hearing.

Johnston's organ, the Drosophila auditory organ, is anatomically very different from the mammalian organ of Corti. However, recent evidence indicates significant cellular and molecular similarities exist between vertebrate and invertebrate hearing, suggesting that Drosophila may be a useful platform to determine the function of the many mammalian deafness genes whose underlying biological mechanisms are poorly characterized. Our goal was a comprehensive screen of all known orthologues of mammalian deafness genes in the fruit fly to better understand conservation of hearing mechanisms between t

Investment Trade-Off between Mating Behavior and Tonic Immobility in the Sweetpotato Weevil Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Brentidae).

Numerous studies have confirmed that the trade-off between anti-predator behavior and mating behavior occurs in certain insect species. This suggests that insects invest more in anti-predator behavior, and fewer resources or time can be used in mating behavior. However, few studies focus on tonic immobility, an important anti-predator behavior in nature, and different stages in mating behavior. Tonic immobility (TI) is considered to be an important anti-predator behavior. Herein, we investigated the relationship between TI and mating behavior in the sweetpotato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius.

Aging and Autophagic Function Influences the Progressive Decline of Adult Drosophila Behaviors.

Multiple neurological disorders are characterized by the abnormal accumulation of protein aggregates and the progressive impairment of complex behaviors. Our Drosophila studies demonstrate that middle-aged wild-type flies (WT, ~4-weeks) exhibit a marked accumulation of neural aggregates that is commensurate with the decline of the autophagy pathway. However, enhancing autophagy via neuronal over-expression of Atg8a (Atg8a-OE) reduces the age-dependent accumulation of aggregates. Here we assess basal locomotor activity profiles for single- and group-housed male and female WT flies and observed
