Content validation and cultural adaptation are necessary to interpret evidence from psychological assessment instruments imported across cultures.

The cross-cultural use of psychological assessment instruments-especially those developed in one cultural context and applied in another-raises critical concerns about content validity and the potential for misleading interpretations drawn from measures derived from those instruments. This article argues that without rigorous cultural adaptation and content validation, psychometric indices and interpretations derived from imported instruments used in cross-cultural assessment may be biased and thus misleading. We first clarify the multidimensional and continuous nature of culture and review ps

Specific reading disability (dyslexia): what have we learned in the past four decades?

We summarize some of the most important findings from research evaluating the hypothesized causes of specific reading disability ('dyslexia') over the past four decades. After outlining components of reading ability, we discuss manifest causes of reading difficulties, in terms of deficiencies in component reading skills that might lead to such difficulties. The evidence suggests that inadequate facility in word identification due, in most cases, to more basic deficits in alphabetic coding is the basic cause of difficulties in learning to read. We next discuss hypothesized deficiencies in readi

Cross-cultural structures of personal name systems reflect general communicative principles.

The structure of personal names appears to differ widely across cultures. Using census records and historical datasets, we present an information-theoretic analysis of name systems that shows how the scope of this variation is more constrained than it might appear. We identify two constraints name systems must satisfy: encoding large numbers of identities, and ensuring these encodings are usable. We show that, historically, the world's languages satisfied these constraints using structurally similar, near-optimal codes. They did so by combining sets of name-specific words with existing vocabul

Reimagining empirical aesthetics through cross-cultural perspectives.

Cross-cultural empirical aesthetics examines how aesthetic experience converges and varies across cultural contexts. In this short review, we synthesize recent work on visual art, music, and dance, with emphasis on the audience perspective within the psychology of art: how viewers, listeners, and observers perceive, feel, evaluate, and make meaning from artworks and performances. Evidence suggests that some perceptual and affective cues, such as harmony, contour, tempo, loudness, rhythm, and synchrony, can support partially shared responses, while aesthetic judgments are shaped by enculturatio

Cross-cultural variation in cooperation: A meta-analysis.

Impersonal cooperation among strangers enables societies to create valuable public goods, such as infrastructure, public services, and democracy. Several factors have been proposed to explain variation in impersonal cooperation across societies, referring to institutions (e.g., rule of law), religion (e.g., belief in God as a third-party punisher), cultural beliefs (e.g., trust) and values (e.g., collectivism), and ecology (e.g., relational mobility). We tested 17 preregistered hypotheses in a meta-analysis of 1,506 studies of impersonal cooperation in social dilemmas (e.g., the Public Goods G

[Results of international and federal German evaluation studies of methadone substitution therapy--an overview].

After a brief historical review results of German evaluation studies are contrasted for the first time with international results concerning the efficiency of methadone treatment of heroin addicts. All studies report a fast and obvious improvement of the patients' physical and psychic well-being. Decrease is observed in drug related criminality as well as in its following consequences such as arrests, trials, and inprisonments. Patients distance themselves from the drug-scene and at the same time increase communication with a drug-free environment. One problem persisting for German methadone-p

Cross-cultural generalizability is an empirical question.

Crowd-sourced replication initiatives reveal that cultural differences in findings, while undoubtedly important in some cases, are often smaller and less systematic than assumed. This makes empirical testing, rather than presumption, exigent. The extent to which developmental psychology theories generalize across cultures is an empirical question, best answered via small- and large-scale collaborations between partner laboratories across the world.

The international prevalence, epidemiology, and clinical phenomenology of Tourette syndrome: a cross-cultural perspective.

The overall international prevalence of Tourette syndrome (TS) is 1% in the majority of cultures of the world. Both TS and tics are certainly more obvious and may be more common in younger people. Moreover, TS is seen less frequently in some cultures. However, in all cultures where it has been reported, the phenomenology is similar, highlighting the biological underpinnings of the disorder. This article reviews the international prevalence, epidemiology, and clinical phenomenology of TS, from a cross-cultural perspective.

Continental viewpoints on the concept of reactive psychoses.

Although the Scandinavian concept of reactive psychoses relates to K. Jaspers and although Kretschmer described the prototype of a psychosis of psychogenic/reactive origin (Der sensitive Beziehungswahn), the concept is not so commonly used in German-speaking countries. Important reasons for this refusal may be (1) the sharp distinction between psychosis (which may be explained but not understood) and understandable reactions, which was stressed in rather influential German psychiatric schools in the middle of the century, and (2) the aim of stressing psychological understanding in a broad spec

[Morita therapy in cultural context].

East is characterized by concepts of transcendence of ego structure, equality of mind to body and psychic structure of emptiness or nothingness. West is on the other hand characterized by concepts of ego strength, superiority of mind to body and psychic structure of fullness. Namely in the East ego is not strengthened but dispersed into relationships of a person with other persons, animated and in-animated others. There is no differentiation between mind and body. Also there is a traditional way of reaching a psychic state of emptiness or nothingness which is found in Zen-Buddhism. However in

[Classification and epidemiology of psychosomatic disorders in children and adolescents].

In the introduction classification of socalled "psychosomatic" disorders in ICD-9 and DSM-III are critically reviewed and supplemented by the author's proposal. Furthermore, main findings coming from international epidemiological research on diseases usually involving tissue damage (bronchial asthma, peptic ulcer, neurodermatitis) and the eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, obesity) are reported. Findly, some conclusions with regard to treatment of the afflicted clientele and research are drawn.

People in more individualist cultures are more motivated to make others feel better.

In many Western cultures, trying to make others feel better is considered critical for psychological health and social relationships. However, given that people think about emotions and relationships differently across cultures, the desirability, means, and benefits of making others feel better may also vary by culture. In two multicountry survey studies (Study 1: N = 3,154, 13 countries; Study 2: N = 3,503, 17 countries) and in a daily dairy study (Study 3: N = 243, 2 countries), we assessed motivation and strategies used for influencing others' and one's own emotions. To test whether potenti

Trance, functional psychosis, and culture.

This paper discusses the hypothesis that the symptoms of functional psychoses can be caused by culturally structured spontaneous trances that may be reactions to environmental stress and psychological trauma. Findings are reviewed of anthropological studies of meditative trance experiences in Indian yogis characterized by divided consciousness (dissociation), religious auditory and visual hallucinations, and beliefs in their own spiritual powers. An explanation of the psychological mechanisms of meditative trance is also provided, highlighting trance-related alteration of consciousness within

Cross-Cultural Disparities in Psychosocial Research with Individuals with Classical Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: There are increased calls to address psychosocial needs among individuals with classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). However, cross-cultural disparities exist in treatment practices and psychosocial outcomes that impact the generalizability of evidence-based recommendations. To date, this disparity has not been quantified. The present scoping review uses a dual approach to contrast rates of CAH diagnosis with CAH psychosocial research rates across countries. METHODS: Six electronic database searches were conducted for: (1) CAH incidence/birth/prevalence rates; and (2)

Physical Activity and Exercise Experience in Spanish and US Men with Fibromyalgia: A Qualitative Cross-Cultural Study.

Physical exercise is an indispensable element in the multidisciplinary treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The present study examined if men diagnosed with FMS engaged in any type of physical activity or exercise, the perceived effects from exercise, and who specifically recommended exercise. A qualitative cross-cultural study was performed in fibromyalgia clinical units in Spain and the United States. A total of 17 participants, 10 men from Spain and 7 men from the US, were included. In Spain, a focus group was completed in two parts, one month apart in 2018. In the US, five individual

Cross-cultural neuropsychological assessment in Europe: Position statement of the European Consortium on Cross-Cultural Neuropsychology (ECCroN).

Over the past decades European societies have become increasingly diverse. This diversity in culture, education, and language significantly impacts neuropsychological assessment. Although several initiatives are under way to overcome these barriers - e.g. newly developed and validated test batteries - there is a need for more collaboration in the development and implementation of neuropsychological tests, such as in the domains of social cognition and language. To address these gaps in cross-cultural neuropsychological assessment in Europe, the European Consortium on Cross-Cultural Neuropsycho
