Morphologic and morphometric evaluation of experimental acute crush injuries of the sciatic nerve of rats.

In order to qualify and quantify nerve fiber lesion following an acute crush injury, a morphologic and morphometric study was carried out in 25 Wistar rats divided into five groups of five animals each according to the crushing load applied, i.e., 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 15,000 g. The injury was produced under general anesthesia on a 5mm-long intermediate segment of the right sciatic nerve for 10 min using a dead-weight machine. The animals were killed with an excessive dose of anesthetics 72 h later and submitted to perfusion with a fixing solution through the abdominal aorta immediate

Late results after microvascular reconstruction of severe crush and avulsion injuries of the upper extremity.

From 1978 to 1985, a total of 64 patients underwent successful hand and digit replantation/revascularisation for salvage after crush and avulsion trauma to their upper extremities. Forty-seven of them (39 males and 8 females) were followed between 10 and 17 years (mean: 12.6 years). The average age was 33.2 years. In 39 patients, replantations were performed: 37 digits (including seven thumbs), two hands, and three midhands. Eight patients underwent revascularizations in cases of subtotal amputations: two in the midhand, three at the wrist, and three at the lower arm. Concomitant injury to the

Neuroprotective effect of atorvastatin in an experimental model of nerve crush injury.

BACKGROUND: Statins have therapeutic benefits for the management of several disorders. A short-term course of a high-dose statin pretreatment has demonstrated neuroprotective effects against neurological diseases. However, the molecular basis underlying the neuroprotective action of statins remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether a short-term course of high-dose atorvastatin pretreatment has beneficial effects in protecting sciatic nerve from crush injury. METHODS: Atorvastatin (5 mg/kg) or saline was given orally to Sprague-Dawley rats for 7 days before injury. The rats were sub

Type grouping in rat skeletal muscle after crush injury.

OBJECT: Accuracy of reinnervation is an important factor that determines outcome after nerve injury and repair. Type grouping--the clustering of muscle fibers of the same type after reinnervation--can be used to investigate the accuracy of reinnervation. In this study, the degree of type grouping after crush injury in rats was compared with the clustering of muscle fibers after autografting or single-lumen nerve grafting. METHODS: Twelve weeks after sciatic nerve crush injury in rats, clustering of Type I muscle fibers was analyzed in the target muscle with adenosine 5'-triphosphatase stainin

Dislocation of the pisiform bone after severe crush injury to the hand.

The pisiform bone dislocated in a 56-year-old worker who had a crush injury of his wrist. Open reduction and reconstruction of the ligaments resulted in proximal subluxation of the pisiform bone and post-traumatic arthritic changes. Other authors recommend that excision of the pisiform is considered to be a more appropriate method of treatment.

Evaluation of nerve recovery from minimal-duration crush injury.

The recovery of damaged peripheral nerves has been the subject of multiple studies. The effects of an inadvertent clamping of a nerve has not been well examined. An experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of a minimal-duration crush injury on the rat sciatic nerve and to determine if walking track analysis was useful in evaluating the short-term functional deficit. Ten Sprague-Dawley rats underwent high-pressure, short-duration crush injuries. Walking track analysis was done regularly for 3 weeks. Histological specimens for light and electron microscopy were taken at postoperative day

Peroneal motor nerve crush injury and hyperbaric oxygen effect.

The potential therapeutic effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) after rat peroneal nerve crush was evaluated. Animals were given 100% oxygen at 2.5 atmosphere absolute for 90 minutes twice daily for 1 week and then once daily for 1 week. Edema increased in crushed nerves compared with control nerves, but no effect was associated with the administration of HBO. Gait analysis demonstrated injury at 1, 7, and 14 days after nerve crush, but no difference was found at 22 and 28 days after injury (analysis of variance: P < .001, 10 animals per group). Eight weeks after injury, nerve stimulation and musc

[Crush injury of the lower limbs. Use of anti-shock trousers].

A case of lower limb crush injury is reported. A 16 year old female sustained severe soft tissue, muscle, skeletal and vascular lesions during a road traffic accident. She rapidly presented with severe haemorrhagic shock due to a popliteal arterial injury. At the scene, massive vascular loading by emergency physicians using both colloids and group O negative packed red cells was not enough to improve the haemodynamic state, even though there was adequate control of the bleeding artery. The pneumatic antishock trousers were therefore used despite the severe injuries to the legs, with rapid impr

Acceleration of peripheral nerve regeneration after crush injury in rat.

It the sciatic nerve of a rat is crushed in the thigh, axons from the proximal side of the crush will regenerate so that the toe-spreading reflex becomes observable again after 10.4 +/- 1.7 (mean +/- S.D.) days. If the nerve is electrically stimulated for 0.25-1.0 h at the crush site, just after the crush occurs, the toe-spreading reflex first becomes observable 4.14 +/- 1.6 (mean +/- S.D.) days after the crush. Stimulation is most effective if delivered immediately after the crush but can be delayed up to an hour and still cause significantly faster regeneration. This phenomenon could be usef

Schwann cell multiplication after crush injury of unmyelinated fibers.

The intensity and duration of Schwann cell multiplication in unmyelinated fibers after crush injury of cervical sympathetic trunks (CSTs) in adult mice was studied using radioautography and electron microscopy. At the level of crush, labeling indexes rose to 22.5% on the second day after injury, but distal to this level, labeling reached a peak of only 2.5%. By the ninth day labeling declined to 1% or less at both sites. Electron microscopy confirmed that the increase in nuclei at the crush was mainly an increase in Schwann cells. Thus, the intensity of Schwann cell multiplication differed bet
