Wolbachia infection and expression of cytoplasmic incompatibility in Armigeres subalbatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Polymerase chain reaction screening revealed that Armigeres subalbatus (Coquillett), a vector of filariasis, was infected with the intracellular bacteria Wolbachia. Laboratory crosses between infected males and uninfected females resulted in less than half the number of offspring than control crosses between uninfected individuals when young (2- to 3-d-old) males were used in the cross. However, imcompatibility was lost when old (14- to 17-d-old) males were used. Field-collected females did not show detectable cytoplasmic incompatibility, and this may be because of the age at which males mate

Introduction and establishment of Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus skuse (Diptera: Culicidae) in Albania.

In August-October 1979, infestations of the mosquito Aedes albopictus were discovered at a number of widely separated sites in Albania. Used tires were the principal larval habitat. The species was probably introduced from China in the mid-1970s. The initial infestation was probably at a rubber factory adjacent to the port of Durrës (Durazzo), from where the mosquito was shipped in tires to recapping plants in other parts of the country. This is the first recorded infestation of Ae. albopictus outside Oriental and Australasian regions.

Variation in attractiveness of human subjects to malaria mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in The Gambia.

During experimental hut trials to assess the efficacy of insecticide-treated bednets against malaria mosquitoes, we observed that human subjects varied consistently in their attractiveness to mosquitoes. Attractiveness was assessed by estimating the numbers of wild Anopheles gambiae Giles mosquitoes entering a hut in which a man was sleeping, and the numbers of human-bloodfed An. gambiae sensu lato collected from each hut each morning. Five trials were carried out at Wali Kunda in rural Gambia during 2.5 yr. During each 6-wk trial a man slept under a bednet in each of the six huts. Morning col

Native Wolbachia infection dynamics across Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) populations in Hawai'i.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus, an important vector of arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, is a widespread invasive mosquito species in the Pacific Islands Countries and Territories, including Hawai'i. Wolbachia, an endosymbiotic bacterium, widely used for mosquito control through its cytoplasmic incompatibility and pathogen blocking properties. Two Wolbachia strains, wAlbA and wAlbB, naturally inhabit Aedes albopictus unlike Aedes aegypti. However, their infection patterns in Hawai'i remain poorly characterized and may influence the success of future Wolbachia-based control effo

Biodiversity of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in phytotelmata from Car Nicobar Island, India.

The Culicidae mosquito family breeds in various natural and artificial water bodies. Phytotelmata are plant structures that hold water and are used by many mosquito species during their life cycle. Mosquitoes are disease vectors, and phytotelmata play an important role in harbouring them. Investigating these phytotelmata will facilitate to develop appropriate site specific vector control strategy. Approximately 750 phytotelmata in 16 locations on Car Nicobar Island was examined. Mosquito larvae were collected from different habitats such as tree holes, root holes, leaf axils, and bamboo stumps

RNAi-Mediated Screening of Selected Target Genes Against Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Culex quinquefasciatus, a member of the Culex pipiens complex, is widespread in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. It is a vector for lymphatic filariasis, Rift Valley fever, and West Nile virus. Studies have shown the deleterious effect of RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown of various lethal genes in model and agricultural pest insects. RNAi was proposed as a tool for mosquito control with a focus on Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae. In this study, we examined the effect of RNAi of selected target genes on both larval mortality and adult emergence of Cx. quinquefasciatus th

Gonoactivity of Culex (Culex) (Diptera: Culicidae) Mosquitoes During Winter in Temperate Argentina.

The subgenus Culex L. includes species involved in summer-autumn arbovirus transmission but studies during winter are scarce in temperate Argentina. Female specimens were collected host-seeking at dry-ice-baited traps during autumn-winter-spring at two sites in Córdoba City during 2016 and 2017. The specimens were morphologically identified and dissected to determine the follicular developmental stage (gonotrophic activity). Females with advanced follicular stages (≥III) were subjected to molecular procedures to confirm or re-identify previous morphological identification. Five species (Culex

Crossover Dynamics of Culex (Diptera: Culicidae) Vector Populations Determine WNV Transmission Intensity.

First introduced into the United States in 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) has become endemic and has established itself as the predominant mosquito-borne arbovirus in North America. Transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Culex, regional landscapes influence local vector species abundance, creating different mosquito ecologies that drive local transmission dynamics. In central Iowa, two mosquito species, Culex restuans Theobald and Culex pipiens Linnaeus, serve as the predominant mosquito vectors. Importantly, these mosquito populations are influenced by seasonal patterns in their abundance, with

Larvicidal and residual activity of imidazolium salts against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is an important mosquito species that can transmit several arboviruses such as dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya and zika. Because these mosquitoes are becoming resistant to most chemical insecticides used around the world, studies with new larvicides should be prioritized. Based on the known biological profile of imidazolium salts (IS), the objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of six IS as larvicides against Ae. aegypti, as tested against Ae. aegypti larvae. Larval mortality was measured after 24 and 48 h, and residual larvicidal activity was a

Molecular analysis and genetic diversity of Aedes albopictus (Diptera, Culicidae) from China.

Aedes albopictus is one of the most invasive species, which can carry Dengue virus, Yellow fever virus and more than twenty arboviruses. Based on mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and samples collected from 17 populations, we investigated the molecular character and genetic diversity of Ae. albopictus from China. Altogether, 25 haplotypes were detected, including 10 shared haplotypes and 15 private haplotypes. H1 was the dominant haplotype, which is widely distributed in 13 populations. Tajima'D value of most populations was significantly negative, demonstrating that populations

N-substituted methyl maleamates as larvicidal compounds against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Severe human arboviral diseases can be transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.), including dengue, chikungunya, zika, and yellow fever. The use of larvicides in containers that can result as potential breeding places and cannot be eliminated is the main alternative in control programs. However, their continuous and widespread use caused an increase in insecticide-resistant populations of this mosquito. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three N-substituted methyl maleamates as larvicides on Ae. aegypti, the N-propyl methyl maleamate (PMM), N-butyl methyl maleamate (BMM),

Population dynamics of Armigeres subalbatus (Diptera: Culicidae) across a temperate altitudinal gradient.

Understanding the impacts of weather fluctuations, and environmental gradients, on the abundance of vectors is fundamental to grasp the dynamic nature of the entomological risk for disease transmission. The mosquito Armigeres subalbatus (Coquillet) is a common vector of filariasis. Nevertheless, its population dynamics have been relatively poorly studied. Here, we present results from a season long study where we studied spatio-temporal abundance patterns of Ar. subalbatus across the altitudinal gradient of Mt. Konpira in Nagasaki, Japan. Spatially, we found that abundance of adult Ar. subalba

[Genetic variability in Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) populations using RAPD markers].

Aedes aegypti (L.) is an important vector of diseases such as the yellow fever and dengue, present in tropical and subtropical regions. The objective of this study was to analyze the genetic variability of different A. aegypti populations using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers as a basic study to support the use of biocontrol strategies. DNA of ten collected larvae from three different populations were analyzed using ten RAPD primers. The results indicated the existence of genetic variability inter and intrapopulation. This was confirmed by a dendrogram that grouped the populati

[Insecticide resistance mechanisms of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) from two Peruvian provinces].

Insecticide resistance of Aedes aegypti larvae and adults from two Peruvian provinces, that is, Trujillo and Tumbes provinces, was conducted. High infestation indexes and extensive use of insecticides based on the Vector Surveillance and Control Strategy of the Ministry of Public Health prevailed in these places. Larval bioassays revealed susceptibility to organophosphorate insecticide called malathion in TRUJILLO strain, it being moderate to fention and fenitrotion and high to chlorpyriphos and temephos;however, TUMBES strain was susceptible to the evaluated organophosphorate compounds, excep

Experimental vertical transmission of West Nile virus by Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae).

Despite the detection of West Nile (WN) virus in overwintering Culex pipiens L. in New York in February 2000, the mechanism by which this virus persists throughout the winter to initiate infections in vertebrate hosts and vectors the following spring remains unknown. After a blood meal, parous mosquitoes generally do not survive until spring and gonotrophic dissociation occurs in only a small percentage of the population. To investigate vertical transmission as a means of viral survival during interepizootics, we intrathoracically inoculated Cx. pipiens and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) with WN vir

Establishment and characterization of three cell lines from Aedes triseriatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Three cell lines (A.t. GRIP-1, 2, and 3) were established from Aedes triseriatus (Say) embryonated eggs or neonate larvae and their morphology, growth, karyotype, and isozyme pattern were studied. The isozyme alleles observed in the 3 cell lines also were found in adults of the original mosquito colony. Each cell line differed in enzymatic, morphological, and karyotypical patterns. La Crosse encephalitis (LAC) and snowshoe hare (SSH) viruses, members of the California encephalitis virus group, were able to replicate in these 3 cell lines. Furthermore, these cell lines, especially A.t. GRIP-1,

Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) vision: response to stimuli from the optical environment.

Although Aedes aegypti (L.) are capable of some wavelength discrimination, behavioral experiments demonstrated that color was not a stimulus to which they responded. Optical stimuli that did affect Ae. aegypti behavior were luminous reflectance, vertical contrast, and movement. Stationary objects of low reflectance and solid color were the most attractive to males and females.

Transmission of western equine encephalomyelitis virus by Argentine Aedes albifasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes albifasciatus (Macquart) has been considered a potential vector of western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus in Argentina because it has been found naturally infected, it is susceptible to infection per os, and its distribution and feeding habits are compatible with those of an epizootic and epidemic vector. Ae. albifasciatus females collected in the vicinity of Cordoba, Argentina, were highly susceptible to WEE virus perorally (ID50 less than 0.5 Vero cell plaque-forming units) when fed on viremic chicks. Virus transmission trials were done 9 to 16 d after infection by feeding potentially

miRNA Expression Response of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus 1762) (Diptera: Culicidae) to Imidacloprid Exposure.

Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Mayaro. The extensive use of insecticides has led to resistance, complicating vector control efforts. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are post-transcriptional regulators involved in detoxification and stress adaptation; however, their role in the insecticide response of Ae. aegypti remains unclear. This study analyzed miRNA expression in Ae. aegypti following imidacloprid exposure, comparing a field strain, Martinez de la Torre from Mexico (MT), and a susceptible reference strain, New Orleans (NO).
