CPE cultural immersion through pairing CPE residents with local religiously diverse families.

This study evaluated a religiously diverse cultural immersion program for clinical pastoral education (CPE) residents at Houston Methodist Hospital System (HM). HM has two cohorts of CPE residents each year, with one at the main hospital and the other at their suburban hospitals. Participants in this qualitative interpretative phenomenological study (IPA) included 20 residents from 2024 and 2025, who were interviewed individually regarding their experiences being paired with a host family from a religion other than their own during their residency. Fifteen themes emerged supporting the concept

Positive sputum fungal culture, fungal sensitisation, and airway microbial diversity in asthmatic children.

Sensitisation to thermotolerant fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans, which can colonise the airways, is associated with poor lung function in children with asthma. Dysbiosis of bacteria and fungi in the airway microbiome has been reported between health and asthma but has yet to be characterised for fungal-sensitised asthmatic children. We investigated if microbial diversity of the airways is altered in fungal-sensitised school-age asthmatic children. Sputum samples from children with asthma who were fungal sensitised (n = 22) and non-fungal sensitised (n = 17) along with

Intra-individual diversity of bacteriophage susceptibility in Burkholderia cultured from cystic fibrosis sputum.

The use of bacteriophage (phage) to treat bacterial infection of airways in persons with cystic fibrosis (CF) is gaining interest. However, phenotypic diversification of bacteria during chronic airway infection presents a potential challenge to this therapy. We recovered and subcultured two or three Burkholderia colonies from each of 12 CF sputum samples. All isolates were tested for their susceptibility to a panel of 65 Burkholderia-targeting phages. We observed that 9 (75%) of the 12 colony sets comprised mixtures of isolates that were sensitive or resistant to one or more of the phages test

Ethnic determinants of skeletal health in female patients with fragility fracture in a culturally diverse population.

BACKGROUND: Low bone density leads to fragility fracture, with significant impact on morbidity and mortality. While ethnic differences in bone density have been observed in healthy subjects, this has not yet been explored in fragility fracture patients. AIMS: To assess if ethnicity is associated with bone mineral density and serum markers of bone health in female patients who experience fragility fractures. METHODS: 219 female patients presenting with at least one fragility fracture at a major tertiary hospital in Western Sydney Australia were studied. Western Sydney is a region with great c

Red soils harbor diverse culturable actinomycetes that are promising sources of novel secondary metabolites.

Red soils, which are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of southern China, are characterized by low organic carbon, high content of iron oxides, and acidity and, hence, are likely to be ideal habitats for acidophilic actinomycetes. However, the diversity and biosynthetic potential of actinomycetes in such habitats are underexplored. Here, a total of 600 actinomycete strains were isolated from red soils collected in Jiangxi Province in southeast China. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed a high diversity of the isolates, which were distributed into 26 genera, 10 familie

The use of care home environments to meet culture-specific needs of culturally and linguistically diverse residents with dementia: an integrative review using the ICF framework.

BACKGROUND: Increasing global migration creates new challenges for multicultural societies in providing equitable care. Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people who move into care homes find themselves in an environment where health professionals do not speak their language and the access to cultural activities is limited. This may increase loneliness and social isolation. When designing care home environments for CALD residents with dementia, culture is a key consideration. The aim of this integrative review is to highlight what elements of the care home environment are reported to

Diversity, bioactivities, and metabolomics of culturable endophytic fungi from the medicinal plant Ardisia crenata Sims.

INTRODUCTION: Ardisia crenata Sims is an important medicinal plant in southern China, yet its industrial utilization is severely limited by unsustainable harvesting of wild resources, inconsistent active ingredient quality, and inefficiencies in conventional extraction processes. Endophytic fungi, which can produce bioactive metabolites identical or analogous to those of the host, offer a promising alternative for sustainable biomanufacturing. METHODS: In this study, a comprehensive screening strategy was developed to isolate and evaluate endophytic fungi from A. crenata Sims with potential a

Models of palliative care for culturally and linguistically diverse people in high-income nations: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Access to palliative care remains uneven for people described, often variably and controversially, as culturally and linguistically diverse. Terminology and definitions differ across jurisdictions, shaping how models are designed, implemented, and reported. Evidence on model design and impact for people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds is limited and heterogeneous. AIM: To map what is known about palliative care models for adults of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in high-income nations, describing model components, reported outcomes, implemen

Unveiling the diversity, ecology, and biotechnological potential of culturable marine yeasts in Western Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.

Coastal ecosystems are dynamic environments characterized by strong seasonal variability in physicochemical parameters and biological communities. In the western Mediterranean, the Region of Murcia (southeastern Spain) is characterized by notable biodiversity and ecological heterogeneity, encompassing diverse habitats, including rocky shores, sandy beaches, seagrass meadows, and the Mar Menor, one of Europe's largest hypersaline lagoons. Within these systems, marine yeasts play critical ecological roles in organic matter recycling and produce metabolites of biotechnological and medical interes

Culture and ICD-11 personality disorder: Implications for clinical practice across diverse ethnic groups.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorder (PD) in ICD-11 is defined primarily by self and interpersonal dysfunction and optionally by other qualifiers. This definition is inseparable from relativism of cultural determinants. AIMS: This review aimed to synthesize the relevant aspects of the influence of culture on clinical practice and health management for this condition, aligning them to the ICD-11 PD model. METHOD: In Scopus, we systematically searched for studies that included the text strings: cultur* | personality AND (disorder* OR patholog*) without any restrictions on publication date or langu

Complex epidemiology of a zoonotic disease in a culturally diverse region: phylogeography of rabies virus in the Middle East.

The Middle East is a culturally and politically diverse region at the gateway between Europe, Africa and Asia. Spatial dynamics of the fatal zoonotic disease rabies among countries of the Middle East and surrounding regions is poorly understood. An improved understanding of virus distribution is necessary to direct control methods. Previous studies have suggested regular trans-boundary movement, but have been unable to infer direction. Here we address these issues, by investigating the evolution of 183 rabies virus isolates collected from over 20 countries between 1972 and 2014. We have undert
