Cyborgs and moral identity.

Neuroscience and technological medicine in general increasingly faces us with the imminent reality of cyborgs-integrated part human and part machine complexes. If my brain functions in a way that is supported by and exploits intelligent technology both external and implantable, then how should I be treated and what is my moral status-am I a machine or am I a person? I explore a number of scenarios where the balance between human and humanoid machine shifts, and ask questions about the moral status of the individuals concerned. The position taken is very much in accordance with the Aristotelian

Influence of dentofacial characteristics on the appearance of self-reported bullying: A review.

Bullying is a social problem that affects children and adolescents in particular. It deteriorates the selfesteem of its victims, decreases their quality of life and generates future psychological problems. The aim of this review was to determine the influence of dentofacial characteristics on the appearance of selfreported bullying through a literature review. A systematic search was carried out in the databases of international scientific literature on health sciences, including MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, and SciELO. Up to October 10, 2020, a total of 348 articles were identified, bu

Disturbed cingulate glutamate metabolism in adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder: evidence in support of the excitatory/inhibitory imbalance hypothesis.

Over the last few years, awareness of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adults has increased. The precise etiology of ASD is still unresolved. Animal research, genetic and postmortem studies suggest that the glutamate (Glu) system has an important role, possibly related to a cybernetic imbalance between neuronal excitation and inhibition. To clarify the possible disruption of Glu metabolism in adults with high-functioning autism, we performed a magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) study investigating the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the cerebellum in adults with high-functioning ASD. Regulation of Escherichia coli fermentation processes: from molecular mechanisms to smart industrial practice.

Escherichia coli remains the premier microbial chassis in industrial biotechnology; yet, translating laboratory-scale metabolic successes into robust, hundred-ton-scale manufacturing presents persistent multidimensional bottlenecks. This review systematically elucidates a contemporary paradigm shift in E. coli fermentation regulation, transitioning from isolated, empirical process adjustments to cross-scale, deeply coupled intelligent cybernetic frameworks. We first deconstruct the precise cross-scale links between macroscopic physicochemical parameters and intracellular biological regulatory

Vagus nerve stimulation therapy in partial epilepsy: a review.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked epileptic seizures. The majority of people given a diagnosis of epilepsy have a good prognosis, but 20-30 % will develop drug-resistant epilepsy. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a neuromodulatory treatment that is used as an adjunctive therapy for treating people with medically refractory epilepsy. It consists of chronic intermittent electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve, delivered by a programmable pulse generator (Neuro-Cybernetic Prosthesis). In 1997, the Food and Drug Administration approved VNS as adju

Personality traits in early psychosis: relationship with symptom and coping treatment outcomes.

AIMS: This study aimed to determine personality profiles of individuals with early psychosis based on the Five Factor Model of personality and assess the predictive value of personality traits or profiles on therapeutic outcomes of two group treatments for recent onset psychosis: cognitive behaviour therapy or skills training for symptom management. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-nine individuals with early psychosis were recruited to participate in a randomized controlled trial. The participants were randomized to one of two group treatments or to a wait-list control group. Measures include

Epilepsy, vagal nerve stimulation by the NCP system, mortality, and sudden, unexpected, unexplained death.

PURPOSE: To determine rates of all-cause mortality and of sudden, unexpected, unexplained deaths in epilepsy (SUDEP) in a cohort of individuals treated with the Neuro Cybernetic Prosthesis (NCP) System for intractable epilepsy, and; to contrast the NCP experience with other epilepsy cohorts. METHODS: A cohort of 791 individuals were followed for 1,335 person-years from implantation. Of the total cohort, 120 individuals had their NCP System devices deactivated. The 15 deaths which occurred during NCP System activation were reviewed for SUDEP by a panel. There were three additional deaths and 2

Modeling the subjective perspective of consciousness and its role in the control of behaviours.

Consciousness has been hypothesized to operate as a global workspace, which accesses and integrates multimodal information in a unified manner, supports expectation violation monitoring and reduction, and the motivation, programming and control of action. One important yet open issue concerns how the subjective perspective at the core of consciousness, and subjective properties of manifestation of the environment in such perspective as an embodied experience, play a role in such process. We operationalised the concept of subjective perspective using the principles of the Projective Consciousne

Walter Pitts and biological computation: Neural realization, biological time, and the unfinished foundations of cognitive science.

Walter Pitts is usually remembered as the mathematical co-author of the 1943 McCulloch-Pitts paper and as a precursor of artificial neural networks. That placement is accurate, but it is too narrow to capture the theoretical significance of his work for biological information systems. This article reconstructs Pitts' contribution as part of an unfinished program of biological computationalism: an approach in which computation becomes explanatory when formally characterizable relations are physically realized by organized biological processes. In the original McCulloch-Pitts case, the relevant

"Subtleties of damage": Montréal, medicine, and migration in the making of intergenerational trauma.

In mid-1960s Montréal, a team of psychiatrists affiliated with the city's Jewish General Hospital identified a disturbing trend in their family therapy practice. The children of concentration camp survivors exhibited forms of severe maladjustment and psychopathology despite their parents' seeming good mental health. These clinical cases examined through a cybernetic-informed family therapy suggested to the psychiatrists that certain forms of trauma could be transmitted across the generations to those who had not experienced the camps firsthand. When daily newspapers publicized this theory in 1

A neuroadaptive interface shows intentional control alters the experience of time.

A reliable experience of time is critical for perception and action in the present, for accurately remembering our past, and for successfully planning a future. Theories of time perception commonly assume a central mechanism keeps time by providing a relatively independent, internal clock. Recent work, however, shows imaginary self-movements alter subjective time, suggesting a critical role for action in temporal cognition. To test the hypothesis that time perception derives from the relationship between action and perception, we designed a neuroadaptive interface operating on imaginary moveme

Effects of chronic job insecurity on Big Five personality change.

Drawing on Cybernetic Big Five Theory, we propose that chronic job insecurity is associated with an increase in neuroticism and decreases in agreeableness and conscientiousness (the 3 traits that reflect stability). Data collected from 1,046 employees participating in the Household, Income and Labor Dynamics in Australia survey over a 9-year period were analyzed. Job insecurity and the other job-related variables (i.e., job control, time demand, and job stress) were measured in all years, and personality was measured at the first, fifth, and ninth years. We applied latent trait-state-occasion

[Present state of pain surgery].

This report presented to the Société de Neurochirurgie de Langue Française is based on 34 years of unique practice in neurosurgical management of pain; during that long period the author and his associates have collected an unusually large experience in almost every field of neurosurgical management of pain; they have improved or fully devised several new techniques which allow them to ground an appreciation of the procedures still worthy to be used in various pain syndromes. The first part of the report deals with "Cybernetics of pain". This rather long chapter is based both on classical data

Becoming sustainable: human determinants of change.

The author is a natural scientist and philosopher who has been involved in the global experience industry for more than 25 years. During this period of time he has developed a coherent, interdisciplinary body of knowledge that appears to be of essential interest as related to the transition towards a sustainable society: the Experience Science (Frank, 2011, 2012). Important scientific inputs come from underlying disciplines like cybernetics, system theory, psychology, and cognitive science. One of the key findings of the Experience Science is the innate structure of human experiencing. Any hum

[Validity of the oncological cytodiagnostics and colposcopy examination versus biopsy in cervical carcinoma prevention].

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: The basic praebioptic methods detecting the precancerous lesions of the uterine cervix are oncologic cytology (PAP smears) and colposcopy. However in the Czech Republic the incidence of the invasive carcinomas during the last 10 years did not considerably decrease. Therefore the goal of our study is to estimate the validity of the prebioptic methods and compare the results of praebioptic methods (procedures) versus biopsy. TYPE OF THE STUDY: Analysis of the results of the oncologic cervical cytology comparing with the results of cervical biopsies performed during the yea

Genealogies of organizational closure: from logical paradox to mind in life.

Organizational closure occupies a central position in contemporary theories of autonomy, anticipation, agency, sense making, and the continuity between life and mind. Its investigation has given rise to a diverse landscape of related explanations, including closure to information, cyclic closure, operational closure, semantic closure, closure-to-efficient causation, metabolic closure, and closure of constraints. Although each of these explanatory approaches captures important aspects of organizational closure, their proliferation has often generated conceptual ambiguity. As a result, organizat
