The biradicals with (14)N-Oxide and (15)N-Oxide at the both ends of a molecule are synthesized for the molecular ruler of protein structure, and a potential device for quantum computing. We also establish a general synthetic method for reliable biradical formation. ESR spectra are recorded for the biradicals containing (15)N-Oxide and (14)N-Oxide with various interdistance separations. We find that two types of biradicals yielded different ESR spectra depending upon the distance between the (15)N-O and (14)N-O moieties in a molecule. Since major disagreements exist regarding the kinetics of superoxide trapping by nitrones, the underlying theory of one of the most popular method used in these studies was reinvestigated. Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) experiments in rotating solids have been performed for the first time using biradicals rather than monomeric paramagnetic centers as polarizing agents. Specifically, two TEMPO radicals were tethered with a poly(ethylene glycol) chain of variable length where the number of glycol units was 2, 3, or 4. When aqueous solutions of DNA are stirred at room temperature, strand breaks occur extensively. Using various spin-traps, coupled with epr spectroscopy, we have shown that this does not proceed via homolysis. It is suggested that breaks occur by hydrolysis at strongly bent regions, momentarily induced by the stirring.

The kinetics of spin-trap adduct formation in beer oxidation exhibits an induction period if the reaction is carried out at elevated temperatures and in the presence of air. This lag period lasts until the endogenous antioxidants are almost completely depleted, and its duration is used as an indicator of the flavor stability and shelf life of beer. The functionalization and particularly the oxidation of cellulose is an intriguing and challenging topic due to the presence of multiple reactive sites, which can undergo specific reactions. The variety of the oxidizing agents used to improve the selectivity and yields of these transformations is illustrated by the steadily growing of the number of publications and patents reported. This paper is focused on the most selective agents for cellulose oxidations, i.e., sodium periodate and stable or non persistent nitroxyl radicals, emphasizing on the most recent developments reported so far.

The effects of sodium cyanide on relaxation, increases in cyclic GMP accumulation and guanylate cyclase activation induced by sodium nitroprusside and other nitrovasodilators were examined in rat thoracic aorta. In rapid scan EPR the rapidly-changing magnetic field induces a background signal that may be larger than the EPR signal. A method has been developed to correct for that background signal by acquiring two sets of data, denoted as scan 1 and scan 2. In scan 2 the external field B0 is reversed and the data acquisition trigger is offset by one half cycle of the scan field relative to the settings used in scan 1. This paper describes a novel experiment on nitroxide radical spin labels using a multiarm EPR W-band bridge with a loop-gap resonator (LGR). We demonstrate EPR spectroscopy of spin labels by linear sweep of the microwave frequency across the spectrum. The high bandwidth of the LGR, about 1 GHz between 3 dB points of the microwave resonance, makes this new experiment possible. The recently reported efficient conversion of cyclic ketones to lactones by Oxone in neutral buffered water is extended to heterocyclic ketones, namely, cyclic N-Boc azaketones and oxoethers with the aim of obtaining N-protected azalactones and their analogues with oxygen in place of nitrogen. N-Boc-4-piperidinone and all the cyclic oxoethers were successfully oxidized to lactones, while the azacyclic ketones with nitrogen α-positioned to carbonyl were univocally transformed into N-Boc-ω-amino acids and N-Boc-N-formyl-ω-amino acids operating in alkaline water and DMF, respectively.

A single missense variant of the TMPO/LAP2α gene, encoding LAP2 proteins, has been associated with cardiomyopathy in two brothers. To further evaluate its role in cardiac muscle, we included TMPO in our cardiomyopathy diagnostic gene panel. BACKGROUND: Cleft palate is among the most common birth abnormalities. The success of primary surgery in the early months of life is crucial for successful feeding, hearing, dental development, and facial growth. Over recent decades, age at palatal surgery in infancy has reduced. The Timing Of Primary Surgery for cleft palate (TOPS) trial aims to determine whether, in infants with cleft palate, it is better to perform primary surgery at age 6 or 12 months (corrected for gestational age).

This work is a continuation of earlier research concerning the influence of tin compounds on the dynamic properties of liposome membranes produced with lecithin hen egg yolks (EYL). The experiments were carried out at room temperature (about 25 degrees C). Four tin compounds were chosen, including three organic ones, (CH3)4Sn, (C2H5)4Sn and (C3H7)3SnCl, and one inorganic, SnCl2.
