To date, more than 20 species in the genus Cyclospora have been reported. Among them, Cyclospora cayetanensis has been recognized as the causative agent of human cyclosporiasis, which is characterized by severe intestinal injury and prolonged diarrhea in patients with immune dysfunction. The presence of C. cayetanensis in cattle has been confirmed. To date, however, no surveillance data are available on the occurrence and prevalence of Cyclospora spp. in cattle in Shanxi Province, North China. In the present study, a total of 761 fecal samples collected from cattle in three representative coun

Food- and waterborne coccidia including Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Sarcocystis hominis and Sarcocystis suihominis, and Isospora belli are cyst-forming apicomplexan protozoa that cause intracellular infections, predominantly in the epithelial cells of the intestine. They are transmitted by oocysts from person-to-person by the fecal-oral route or via contaminated water or food. The most common symptom of infection is diarrhea, however, asymptomatic infections occur. Infections are associated with intestinal inflammation, with pathological lesions such as villus blunting, an

OBJECTIVE: In 2014/2015, Public Health Ontario developed disease-specific, cumulative sum (CUSUM)-based statistical algorithms for detecting aberrant increases in reportable infectious disease incidence in Ontario. The objective of this study was to determine whether the prospective application of these CUSUM algorithms, based on historical patterns, have improved specificity and sensitivity compared to the currently used Early Aberration Reporting System (EARS) algorithm, developed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
METHOD: A total of seven algorithms were developed for th

From May to August 1999, we evaluated 401 patients from a pediatric hospital of Havana City. One group was composed of 113 patients with diarrhea admitted to the Gastroenterology ward and a second consisted of 288 patients without diarrhea, admitted for other reasons, and hospitalized within the same time period. Three stool samples were collected from each child and were examined using three parasitological techniques. When we compared the frequency of parasite species between both groups, we found Cryptosporidium spp. and Cyclospora cayetanensis, only in the group of children with diarrhea (

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a foodborne protozoan parasite that causes the human diarrheal disease cyclosporiasis. Recently, the US FDA developed a modified real-time PCR method based on a specific mitochondrial target gene (Mit1C) to detect C. cayetanensis in fresh produce. The method was validated by single laboratory validation (SLV) studies in Romaine lettuce, cilantro, and raspberries. The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of the new real-time Mit1C (Mit1C qPCR) method by comparing it with the current BAM Chapter 19b qPCR (18S qPCR) as the reference method for the detection o

This study aimed to develop a new multiplex real-time PCR detection method for 3 species of waterborne protozoan parasites (Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia, and Cyclospora cayetanensis) identified as major causes of traveler's diarrhea. Three target genes were specifically and simultaneously detected by the TaqMan probe method for multiple parasitic infection cases, including Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein for C. parvum, glutamate dehydrogenase for G. lamblia, and internal transcribed spacer 1 for C. cayetanensis. Gene product 21 for bacteriophage T4 was used as an internal contro

Coccidian parasites are significant emerging contributors to the changing aetiological landscape of diarrhoeal diseases, primarily affecting individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds. They pose a great threat to the immuno-compromised in whom co-infections may lead to considerable morbidity and mortality. Timely detection is essential for improving clinical outcomes; however, comprehensive data on associated risk factors, transmission routes, and socio-demographic patterns remain limited. Modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining confirmed the presence of co-infection of Cryptosporidium and Cycl

Intestinal parasitological survey was conducted to clarify the distribution of intestinal parasites in Nepal and Lao Peoples' Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) from 2001 to 2003. A total of 401 diarrheal fecal specimens were collected from patients aged one to 75 years (250 from Nepal and 151 from Lao PDR). The specimens were examined using the formalin-ether sedimentation (FES) and sucrose centrifugal flotation (SCF) techniques. Nine species (3 Nematoda, 1 Cestoda, and 5 Protozoa) of parasites were recovered from Nepal, whereas seven species (3 Nematoda, 1 Trematoda, and 3 Protozoa) from Lao PDR.

Giardia duodenalis, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Cyclospora cayetanensis are usually classified as Neglected Tropical Diseases, causing giardiasis, microsporidiosis and cyclosporiasis, respectively, which significantly contributed to food- and water-transmitted intestinal illnesses in both humans and animals. In this study, we conducted on the prevalence and molecular characterization of Giardia, E. bieneusi and C. cayetanensis of diarrheal outpatients from three areas in the Yangtze River Delta, China. A total of 2 720 fecal samples were collected and nested PCR was used to identify and descri

BACKGROUND: Protozoan infections are the most serious among all the superimposed infections in HIV patients and claim a number of lives every year. The line of treatment being different for diverse parasites necessitates a definitive diagnosis of the etiological agents to avoid empirical treatment. Thus, the present study has been aimed to elucidate the associations between diarrhoea and CD4 counts and to study the effect of HAART along with management of diarrhoea in HIV positive patients. This study is the first of its kind in this area where an attempt was made to correlate seasonal variati

BACKGROUND: Enteric parasitic infections remain a major public health problem globally. Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora spp. and Giardia spp. are parasites that cause diarrhea in the general populations of both developed and developing countries. Information from molecular genetic studies on the speciation of these parasites and on the role of animals as vectors in disease transmission is lacking in Ghana. This study therefore investigated these diarrhea-causing parasites in humans, domestic rats and wildlife animals in Ghana using molecular tools.
METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from

Background: The sub-Saharan Africa has the fastest rate of urbanisation in the world. However, infrastructure growth in the region is slower than urbanisation rates, leading to inadequate provision and access to basic services such as piped safe drinking water. Lack of sufficient access to safe water has the potential to increase the burden of waterborne diseases among these urbanising populations. This scoping review assesses how the relationship between waterborne diseases and water sufficiency in Africa has been studied. Methods: In April 2020, we searched the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase
