Among the most common pollutants that enter the environment after passing municipal wastewater treatment are estrogens, especially the synthetic 17α-ethinylestradiol that is used in oral contraceptives. Estrogens are potent endocrine disruptors at concentrations frequently observed in surface waters. However, new genetic analyses suggest that some fish populations can be self-sustaining even in heavily polluted waters. We now need to understand the basis of this tolerance.

Bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are closely related species in the subfamily Xenocypridinae within Cyprinidae, and they are also two of the four most important pond-cultured fish species in China. The ratmouth barbel (Ptychidio jordani) is a critically endangered freshwater fish from the Cyprinidae family, primarily due to overfishing and habitat disruption. To address the challenges of its shrinking wild populations and the difficulties in artificial reproduction, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated a high-quality chromosome-level genome of P. jordani using next-generation short-read sequencing, third-generation long-read sequencing, and Hi-C sequencing. The final genome assembly was 1.14 Gb, consisting of 25 chromosomes with a contig N50 of 25.14 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 42.91 Mb.

Melanoma is a highly aggressive neoplasm of melanocytes, commonly studied in mammals but rarely documented in wild fish populations. This study reports the first confirmed case of malignant melanoma in Terapon jarbua (Forsskål, 1775) from the Parangipettai landing center on the southeastern coast of India. This study presents data collected over a 3 year period on the effects of simulated geomagnetic storms (SGMS) on Eurasian roach Rutilus rutilus embryos.
