Deflation techniques for faulty Foley catheter balloons: presentation of a cystoscopic technique.

The Foley catheter is used for drainage of the urinary bladder in < or = 15% of hospitalized patients and is self-retained by an inflatable balloon mechanism. Faulty balloon deflation, which leads to a retained catheter, is a condition treated by the urologist. In this article we describe a cystoscopic approach to deflation, evaluation, and recovery of retained fragments; review the techniques for deflation; and provide an algorithm to approach the retained Foley catheter.

Correlation of the cystoscopic appearance and functional integrity of the female urethral sphincteric mechanism.

OBJECTIVES: Urologists in the past, and many today, rely on the cystoscopic appearance of the female urethra as a guide to its functional integrity. To assess the accuracy of this approach better, we compared the cystoscopic appearance of the bladder neck and proximal urethra to the functional integrity of this mechanism during videourodynamic studies. METHODS: One hundred consecutive videourodynamic studies were reviewed on female patients with more complex types of urinary incontinence. Reports of their cystoscopic examinations were reviewed and results compared. RESULTS: Significant dysfu

Extending cystoscopic techniques into the ureter and renal pelvis. Experience with ureteroscopy and pyeloscopy.

The availability of extended-length, small-caliber endoscopes allows the use of many cystoscopic techniques in the ureter and renal pelvis. Although the instruments are rigid, they can be passed transurethrally in both male and female patients to allow the urologist to diagnose and treat many lesions of the upper urinary tract. The success of our series demonstrates the utility and safety of the technique, which often eliminates the need for surgical exposure of the lesions.

Ideal cystoscopic interval after nephroureterectomy in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to clarify the appropriate cystoscopic interval after nephroureterectomy (NU) for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) using a hypothetical model. METHODS: A total of 155 patients who underwent NU in 15 years were retrospectively evaluated. Three hypothetical models for surveillance intervals were created: 3 (model 1), 6 (model 2) and 12 months (model 3). We superimposed these models on the actual surveillance of each patient and analyzed the observed timing of recurrence. The time from recurrence to scheduled cystoscopy (timeRCS) was defined as the t

"Central Road" cystoscopic finding: The road to worsened incontinence following laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy.

INTRODUCTION: This paper presents the "Central Road" cystoscopic finding accompanied by magnified mixed urinary incontinence following laparoscopic sacrocolopopexy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old female experienced severe mixed urinary incontinence upon completing laparoscopic sacrocolopopexy. The cystoscopy showed a cord-like appearance in the center of the bladder trigon and posterior wall. Videourodynamics confirmed stress urinary incontinence, and chain cystourethrography indicated that the proximal urethra was open and the posterior vesicourethral angle was atypically widened. After im

A prospective and randomized comparison of rigid ureteroscopic to flexible cystoscopic retrieval of ureteral stents.

BACKGROUND: Flexible cystoscopy has become an accepted alternative for stent retrieval. However, it is associated with higher cost. Some reports have described experiences of using rigid ureteroscope to retrieve ureteral stents. We compared rigid ureteroscopic to flexible cystoscopic retrieval of ureteral stents in a prospective and randomized clinical trial. METHODS: Three hundred patients treated with ureteral stents between July 2012 and July 2013 were accrued in this study. These patients were divided into two groups using the random number table method. Group A, with 162 patients, had st

An easy technique for removal of knotted catheter in the bladder: percutaneous suprapubic cystoscopic intervention.

Uncontaminated urine samples are indispensable to precisely diagnose urinary tract infections in new-borns or infants. Among many clinical interventions for urine collection are described, the most common noninvasive practice is using sterile bags, associated with significant contamination of samples. In children, however, invasive methods i.e. catheterization, are generally needed for reliable urine specimens. Almost always all the inserted catheters are easily drawn back, nevertheless, might not work as expected, and lead to considerable problems that cannot be overcome. Herein, a case of a

Combined percutaneous antegrade and cystoscopic retrograde approach in the treatment of distal ureteric fistulae.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of a cystoscopic approach, as definitive treatment of ureteral fistulae, after failure of antegrade ureteral stent insertion. METHODS: Of 43 ureter fistulae encountered over 4 years, 10 postoperative and/or postradiotherapy fistulae could not be stented via an antegrade approach alone. A cystoscopic approach was used, with the antegrade approach available as back-up, if necessary. RESULTS: In two patients the ureteral orifice could not be visualized cystoscopically, thus precluding the retrograde approach. In the eight remaining patients, the retrograde app

Comparison of fluorescence intensity of protoporphyrin IX as observed on the screen of different cystoscopic systems.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic diagnosis-assisted transurethral resection of bladder tumor (PDD-TURBT) is an important and useful intervention used for removing non-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Several PDD devices can be used in clinical practice, but few reports have compared them.In this study, we examined the differences in detected fluorescence intensity for each PDD device. METHODS: The PDD device was used from OLYMPUS, Richard Wolf, and Karl Storz. Light power and illuminance from endoscope were measured. For each PDD device, fluorescence intensity was measured at 3 cm and 8 cm distance f

Cystoscopic Guided Laser Cauterization in a Dog with Complete Y-Type Urethral Duplication.

Duplication of the urethra is a rare congenital malformation. A 14-month-old, sexually intact, male, Lagotto dog with complete Y-type urethral duplication was subjected to accessory urethra treatment for cystoscopic guided laser cauterization, with a 10-Watt diode laser with 550-micron fiber and 2.3 Fr outer diameter. The laser cauterization, that was repeated every 14 days for a total of three times, was performed by inserting the instrument from the accessory urethra outlet in the perianal area until it could be seen by the urethroscope, inside the ischial urethra. Nevertheless, this techniq

[Cystoscopic-guided laser ablation for treatment of ectopic ureteroceles in 2 female dogs].

Two female intact Labrador Retriever dogs (6 and 3 months of age, respectively) presented with a history of urinary incontinence. In both dogs, abdominal ultrasound revealed evidence of a unilateral ectopic ureterocele. Diagnosis of ureteral ectopia was established urethrocystoscopically by visualization of the ureteral orifice in the urethra, and an intramural course was confirmed via retrograde contrast fluoroscopy. Ectopic ureteral orifices were stenotic in both dogs. Cystoscopic- and fluoroscopic-guided laser ablation of the ectopic ureter were performed with a Hol:YAG laser. Following the

Laparoscopic Partial Bladder Cystectomy for Bladder Endometriosis: A Combined Cystoscopic and Laparoscopic approach.

OBJECTIVE: Urinary tract endometriosis involves the bladder and/or the ureters and is present in approximately 1% of women with endometriosis [1]. Bladder endometriosis is the most frequent type of urinary tract endometriosis, occurring in about 70% to 85% of cases [2,3]. Bladder endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma in the detrusor muscle. Surgically, there are 2 ways of excising this disease. The first is by transurethral bladder resection of the tumor, and the second is laparoscopic/robotic/open partial cystectomy of the bladder endometriosis. Because the
