Longitudinal evaluation of structural brain alterations in two established mouse models of Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) affects nearly 30% of veterans from the 1990-1991 Gulf War (GW) and is a multi-symptom illness with many neurological effects attributed to in-theater wartime chemical overexposures. Brain-focused studies have revealed persistent structural and functional alterations in veterans with GWI, including reduced volumes, connectivity, and signaling that correlate with poor cognitive and motor performance. GWI symptomology components have been recapitulated in rodent models as behavioral, neurochemical, and neuroinflammatory aberrations. However, preclinical structural imaging

Chemical and Plant-Based Insect Repellents: Efficacy, Safety, and Toxicity.

Most emerging infectious diseases today are arthropod-borne and cannot be prevented by vaccinations. Because insect repellents offer important topical barriers of personal protection from arthropod-borne infectious diseases, the main objectives of this article were to describe the growing threats to public health from emerging arthropod-borne infectious diseases, to define the differences between insect repellents and insecticides, and to compare the efficacies and toxicities of chemical and plant-derived insect repellents. Internet search engines were queried with key words to identify scient

Olfactory learning and memory in the disease vector mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Olfactory learning in blood-feeding insects, such as mosquitoes, could play an important role in host preference and disease transmission. However, standardised protocols allowing testing of their learning abilities are currently lacking, and how different olfactory stimuli are learned by these insects remains unknown. Using a Pavlovian conditioning paradigm, we trained individuals and groups of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to associate an odorant conditioned stimulus (CS) with a blood-reinforced thermal stimulus (unconditioned stimulus; US). Results showed, first, that mosquitoes could learn the

Repellent and insecticidal activities of secondary metabolites from Praxelis clematidea against Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Praxelis clematidea is a high-risk invasive species with potent insecticidal and repellent properties. This study isolated and identified its bioactive constituents against the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. Through bioassay-guided fractionation using a digging-based repellency assay, an active oily mixture (I2-[3]) was obtained, with a minimum repellent effective dose (MRED) of 0.0125 mg/g. Notably, caryophyllene oxide, a major component (22.3%), showed stronger repellency (MRED = 0.00156 mg/g) than DEET (MRED = 0.00625 mg/g). Friedelin (MRED = 0.0625 mg/g), stigmasterol, and 4',5

Novel Essential Oils Blend as a Repellent and Toxic Agent against Disease-Transmitting Mosquitoes.

Bio-insecticidal research has focused on long-term vector control using essential oils (EOs). This study examined the larvicidal, oviposition-deterrent, and repellent properties of five medicinal herb-based EO formulations (EOFs) on mosquitoes that are vectors of dengue, filariasis, and malaria. EOFs were significantly more toxic to the larvae and pupae of Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles stephensi, and Aedes aegypti with LC50 = 9.23, 12.85, and 14.46 ppm, as well with 10.22, 11.39, and 12.81 ppm, with oviposition active indexes of -0.84, -0.95, and -0.92, respectively. Mosquito repellents in frog skin.

The search for novel insect repellents has been driven by health concerns over established synthetic compounds such as diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET). Given the diversity of compounds known from frog skin and records of mosquito bite and ectoparasite infestation, the presence of mosquito repellents in frogs seemed plausible. We investigated frog skin secretions to confirm the existence of mosquito repellent properties. Litoria caerulea secretions were assessed for mosquito repellency by topical application on mice. The secretions provided protection against host-seeking Culex annulirostris mosquit

Occurrence and distribution of pesticides in precipitation as revealed by targeted screening through GC-MS/MS.

Facing the tough challenge of precise measurement of ever-increasing numbers of organic contaminants in the environment, there is an urgent need for more reliable and cost-effective methodologies. In this study, we developed and validated a screening method for analysis of over 450 pesticides in precipitation using gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was applied to extract target analytes from precipitation. Using this targeted approach, we managed to detect 123 pesticides with maximum retention ti

Effect of Environmental Conditions and Toxic Compounds on the Locomotor Activity of Pediculus humanus capitis (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae).

In this work, we evaluated the effect of environmental variables such as temperature, humidity, and light on the locomotor activity of Pediculus humanus capitis. In addition, we used selected conditions of temperature, humidity, and light to study the effects of cypermethrin and N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) on the locomotor activity of head lice. Head lice increased their locomotor activity in an arena at 30°C compared with activity at 20°C. When we tested the influence of the humidity level, the locomotor activity of head lice showed no significant differences related to humidity leve

Mosquito repellents and superwarfarin rodenticides--are they really toxic in children?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In many United States households, there are many substances used to control the exposure of our children to mosquitoes, mice and rats. This review provides information on common mosquito repellents and rodenticides used in households and discusses their toxicity, in order to help pediatricians better advise their patients of their proper use. RECENT FINDINGS: A recent study has demonstrated that many continue to have practices of applying DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) based repellents that may lead to undesirable effects. Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are two

Protective behavior survey, West Nile virus, British Columbia.

We investigated personal protective behaviors against West Nile virus infection. Barriers to adopting these behaviors were identified, including the perception that DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide and related compounds) is a health and environmental hazard. Televised public health messages and knowing that family or friends practiced protective behaviors were important cues to action.

Bioengineering of a cellulosic fabric for insecticide delivery via grafted cyclodextrin.

beta-Cyclodextrin (beta-CD) can be easily grafted onto cellulosic textiles through covalent bonds. In such a way beta-CD empty cavities provide an efficient tool for entrapping different kinds of hydrophobic molecules on the surface of the fabric and releasing them slowly in time. The capability of cyclodextrins to include hydrophobic molecules such as fragrances, antimicrobial agents, and other chemicals can be then exploited to produce new grafted textiles with peculiar and useful performances. In this work we report the inclusion of two different products, the pyrethroid insecticide permeth

Chemical Composition and Repellent Activity of Strobilanthes tonkinensis Foliar Extract and Its Fractions Against Tribolium castaneum.

Protecting stored grains from pest infestation (e.g., Tribolium castaneum) is crucial for cereal preservation and food safety. The insecticides commonly used for grain storage can leave toxic residues or byproducts that pollute the environment and harm humans. In this study, the repellent activity of natural products from Strobilanthes tonkinensis Lindau leaves against T. castaneum was investigated. Thirty-five chemical components were tentatively identified, and the repellent activities of the crude extract, its fractions, and estragole were evaluated. At the same concentrations (1%, equivale

Comparative Assessment of Pesticide Exposures in Domestic Dogs and Their Owners Using Silicone Passive Samplers and Biomonitoring.

Pesticides are used extensively in residential settings for lawn maintenance and in homes to control household pests including application directly on pets to deter fleas and ticks. Pesticides are commonly detected in the home environment where people and pets can be subject to chronic exposure. Due to increased interest in using companion animals as sentinels for human environmental health studies, we conducted a comparative pesticide exposure assessment in 30 people and their pet dogs to determine how well silicone wristbands and silicone dog tags can predict urinary pesticide biomarkers of

Gulf war illness-related chemicals increase CD11b/c+ monocyte infiltration into the liver and aggravate hepatic cholestasis in a rodent model.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic multisymptom disorder affecting veterans of the 1990-91 Gulf war. GWI was linked with exposure to chemicals including the nerve gas prophylactic drug pyridostigmine-bromide (PB) and pesticides (DEET, permethrin). Veterans with GWI exhibit prolonged, low-level systemic inflammation, though whether this impacts the liver is unknown. While no evidence exists that GWI-related chemicals are hepatotoxic, the prolonged inflammation may alter the liver's response to insults such as cholestatic injury. We assessed the effects of GWI-related chemicals on macrophage in

Cockroach connoisseurs: effects of contamination on gel bait efficacy and consumption by German cockroaches (Blattodea: Ectobiidae) under laboratory conditions.

Baits are one of the most effective German cockroach (Blattella germanica L.) control methods. However, despite their efficacy, the nature of their application causes them to be prone to contamination with a number of potential chemicals. This contamination, either by other insecticides or commonly used cleaning products, is therefore touted as a reason for bait failure. To address this concern, this study evaluated the efficacy and consumption of 2 cockroach gel baits (Advion, Maxforce FC Magnum) after contamination with a variety of insecticides and cleaning products. Contamination of baits

Rhodnius prolixus smells repellents: Behavioural evidence and test of present and potential compounds inducing repellency in Chagas disease vectors.

Insect repellents are known since many decades ago and constitute a major tool for personal protection against the biting of mosquitoes. Despite their wide use, the understanding of why and how repellents repel is relatively recent. In particular, the question about to what extent insects other than mosquitoes are repulsed by repellents remains open. We developed a series of bioassays aimed to test the performance of well established as well as potential repellent molecules on the Chagas disease vector Rhodnius prolixus. Besides testing their ability to prevent biting, we tested the way in whi
