BACKGROUND: Menopause is frequently accompanied by sleep disturbances, depression, and anxiety, negatively affecting women's quality of life. While hormone therapy can be effective, safety concerns highlight the need for accessible non-pharmacological options. Mind-body therapies (MBTs) have emerged as promising interventions, yet their overall efficacy remains unclear.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of MBTs-such as Yoga, Mindfulness, Qigong, Art therapy, Music therapy, Dance therapy and Reiki-on sleep, depr

BACKGROUND: The prevention of falls among older people is a major public health challenge. Exercises that challenge balance are recognized as an efficacious fall prevention strategy. Given that small-scale trials have indicated that diverse dance styles can improve balance and gait of older adults, two of the strongest risk factors for falls in older people, this study aimed to determine whether social dance is effective in i) reducing the number of falls and ii) improving physical and cognitive fall-related risk factors.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: A parallel two-arm cluster randomized controlled

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most frequent causes of disability among older people, characterized by motor disorders, rigidity, and balance problems. Recently, dance has started to be considered an effective exercise for people with PD. In particular, Irish dancing, along with tango and different forms of modern dance, may be a valid strategy to motivate people with PD to perform physical activity. The present protocol aims to implement and evaluate a rehabilitation program based on a new system called "SI-ROBOTICS," composed of multiple technological components, such a

OBJECTIVE: The Direct Assessment of Nonvertebral Fractures in Community Experience (DANCE) study investigated the use of teriparatide in men and women with osteoporosis in the United States (US) and Puerto Rico (PR). In a sub-analysis, we evaluated whether the baseline characteristics of Latinas differed from those of white women in the study population and whether any patient attributes affected physicians' decisions to prescribe teriparatide.
METHODS: We assessed 3 patient cohorts treated with teriparatide 20 microg once daily for up to 24 months: 1) PR Latinas, 2) US Latinas, and 3) white

Sixteen patients underwent surgical excision of an impinging ossicle through a posterior lateral approach. Twelve of these patients (15 ankles) were available for followup and were retrospectively surveyed at an average of 28 months after surgery. There were 9 women and 3 men. Nine were professional ballet dancers and 3 were students of advanced ballet schools. Preoperative symptoms included pain localized to the posterior ankle, limitation of motion, weakness, swelling, or neurologic changes associated with dance activities. All patients were severely hampered in their dance participation and

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from the Fibromyalgia (FM) have impaired cognitive function, reduced physical activity and more marked depressive symptoms. While physical activity and exercise therapy are not typically part of the standard treatment for this syndrome, there is mounting evidence that regular participation in activities involving physical exertion has a positive impact on psychological functioning in people with FM. This study compares the impact of two different interventions, aerobic exercise training and Zumba dancing, on working memory, motor function and depressive symptoms

This paper attempts to join the dots between psychoanalytic and post-psychoanalytic perspectives in relation to climate change and the ecological crisis and to begin a discussion on the role of joy in sustaining ourselves in the face of the global catastrophe. There is a vital expanding psychoanalytic literature addressing itself to the environmental crisis but a striking absence on joy and what stands in its way. This paper explores what psychoanalysis has to offer in the context of planetary emergency and also asks psychoanalysis to look beyond itself and reimagine what it can be. Joy involv

BACKGROUND: Studies have assessed the therapeutic effect of music, dance, and rhythmic auditory cueing for patients with Huntington's disease (HD). However, the synthesis of evidence in support of their positive impact on symptoms is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic literature review to evaluate the potential benefits of music, dance, and rhythm on the cognitive, psychiatric and motor function in patients with HD.
METHODS: Two- and three-keyword searches and a manual search identified medical literature published from 1999 through 2019. We considered literature that assessed out

INTRODUCTION: Motor skills are integral to numerous developmental domains throughout infancy and childhood. In autism, motor impairments are prevalent and pervasive, often appearing before core symptoms. These motor difficulties have a cascading effect on a child's broader physical and psychological health, including social, cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning. Accordingly, researchers are increasingly interested in interventions that improve motor functioning, as these may have a downstream effect on broader developmental domains. One intervention that could address motor difficu

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of randomized clinical trials that utilized dance and yoga as interventions for individuals with Parkinson's disease in relation to anxiety, self-esteem, cognition, depressive symptoms, and fecal and urinary incontinence. Method: Five databases (Embase, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science) were consulted following PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO. Results: Seven studies were included in the meta-analysis, showing low risk of bias and high heterogeneity (I2 = 91%; p < .001). Yoga was effective for anxiety (I2 = 97%; p < .001) and

Many therapeutic disciplines have increased research into using healthcare informatics for monitoring workload productivity, but informatics research in the creative arts therapies is still emerging. This paper discusses the development of a healthcare informatics tool to capture workload data within a multisite network of creative arts therapists within the military and veteran healthcare systems: art therapists, dance/movement therapists, and music therapists. In this paper, we describe the development of a workload performance measurement tool (PMT) through agile project management and a pa

Many studies have shown the effect of dance to the brain. It seems that long-term practice modulates brain plasticity and visuomotor skills, as it activates the Action Observation Network (AON). The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate potential differences in the brain activity (visuomotor skills) between professional dancers and non-dancer adults, measured by electroencephalography (EEG), during the observation of an individual who is dancing (video dance stimuli). This literature search was conducted from February to June 2022, according to the PRISMA guidelines, in the PubMed data

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) usually experience worsening of both motor and non-motor symptoms. Dancing has been postulated to help patients with Parkinson's via several mechanisms that lead to improved physical, cognitive and social functions.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted following Cochrane methodology and reported following the PRISMA guideline. Four databases (up to June 2021) were searched for RCTs comparing dance to standard or other physical therapy for improvements in disease severity, quality of life, cognitive and physical outcomes as well as ad

Overuse injuries of tendons are known to occur in persons whose activities submit the tendon to excessive stress. Classical ballet dancers performing en pointe, demie point, or plié exert forces that, although normal in magnitude, are increased in frequency, thus overusing the Achilles tendon. In the present study all cases of Achilles tendinopathy seen in a period of three years in three ballet companies were reviewed by a special orthopedic clinic. The cause, whether by abnormal tension or incorrect use, development, and progression to chronic tendinopathy, as well as measures to prevent it,

Parkinson's is a progressive neurological disorder impacting physical, cognitive, emotional, and sensory functions. Dance is a form of physical activity that can offer social, psychological, and physical benefits and enhance quality of life for individuals with Parkinson's. This study explored program facilitators' perceptions and experiences facilitating a community dance class for individuals with Parkinson's through the lens of physical literacy. Six program facilitators (four instructors, one volunteer, and one musical accompanist) of a weekly community dance class participated in semistru

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that in-person dance training is a beneficial form of physical activity that involves mental, social, and physical dimensions. This exploratory study investigated the benefits of a 12-week online dance training intervention on mental and physical health outcomes for older women.
METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-method design was used. Forty-five older adults (74.0 ± 5.3 yrs old, 44 women) were recruited through advertisements at activity and rehabilitation centers in the North Denmark region. The intervention consisted of two weekly 60-min classes of impr
