BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: 'Dancing-like' semiology is extremely rare and described in few case reports. It is characterized by rhythmic, oscillatory movements of the pelvis and/or limbs during which the subject appears to be dancing. It has been associated with both the frontal and temporal epileptic zone; however, the possible network involved in these fascinating seizures is unclear.
METHODS: The case of a 45-year-old woman suffering from drug-resistant focal epilepsy with multi-day seizures of bizarre semiology is described. A structural and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging study (interi

AIM: We planned a cross-sectional investigation (study 1) and a longitudinal training intervention (study 2) to investigate whether recreational dancing affords greater neuroprotective effects against age-related neuromuscular junction (NMJ) degeneration compared to general fitness exercise training.
METHODS: In study 1, we recruited 19 older volunteers regularly practising dancing (older dancers [OD]) and 15 recreationally physically active older individuals (OA) and physical performance, muscle morphology, muscle function, and NMJ stability (from serum C-terminal agrin fragment [CAF] concen

The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and meaningfulness of a 15-week recreational dance and singing program for people with neuromuscular conditions. Within a transformative mixed-methods design, pulmonary function tests, plethysmography through wearable technology (Hexoskin vests), individualized neuromuscular quality-of-life assessments (version 2.0), and semistructured interviews were used. The interviews were analyzed through inductive, semantic thematic analysis. Although the sample sizes were small (six people with neuromuscular conditions), the authors found no evidence of

AIM: This case report provides insight into the function of the anterior prefrontal cortex (aPFC), specifically Brodmann Area 10 (BA10), and its interconnectivity.
METHOD: We present a 10-year-old patient with lesional epilepsy and ictal onset, localised to BA10 in the aPFC.
RESULTS: Thirty-four seizures were recorded. All seizures involved a demonstration of elation with laughter that was associated with a variety of different patterns of complex motor behaviour that included performing specific celebratory movements and acting out a Michael Jackson dance move. Electrographically, the seizu

BackgroundParkinson's disease (PD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease, and is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, including gait dysfunction and cognitive decline. Dance has emerged as a promising intervention for improving motor and non-motor symptoms in persons with PD (PwPD), yet long-term effects remain underexplored.ObjectiveTo assess changes in cognitive function and gait performance over six years among PwPD who participated in a weekly dance program, compared to a Reference group who remained physically inactive.MethodsThis six-year longi

INTRODUCTION: Archaeological findings witness the anthropological roots of dance, while psychological, medical, cultural and aesthetic studies shed light on health promoting capacities and curative factors inhering in symbolic and expressive body movement. Since dance therapy became a multifaceted discipline in the middle of the 20th century, increasing evidence of beneficial effects has advocated the use of dance therapy in a broad spectrum of clinical and public health areas such as psychiatry, oncology, neurology, cardiology and geriatrics. Psychological and neurophysiological studies eluci

Dance teachers have to be in long hours dancing. That entails repetitive movements, loud live music, and as well as forcing their voices. These demands can implicate severe health problems and other kind of illness as discomfort, stress, etc. However, the Spanish Ministry of Health only recognize as professional disease for this line of work, the vocal nodules. For this reason, this research studies the health problems in dance teachers in Andalusia, correlating the results of a survey carried out in different conservatories from Andalusia with measurement of noise emissions levels, assessment

The objective of this series was to show that the sonographic appearance described as the "filarial dance" is not characteristic of filariasis but occurs in nonendemic areas as a manifestation of epididymal obstruction. An experienced observer documented cases after initial observation of the filarial dance in routine clinical practice using high-frequency linear array transducers. The filarial dance was described as excessive to-and-fro movement of echogenic particles within a prominent epididymis and graded 1 to 4 according to the extent and distribution of the abnormality. BACKGROUND: Despite a growing body of literature reporting eating disorders (EDs) in non-Western countries in recent years, most of these studies are limited to questionnaire-based surveys or case-series studies. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and correlates of EDs in Taiwanese high-school students.
METHODS: The study subjects consisted of all the female high-school students enrolled in the gifted dance class in 2003 in Taiwan (n=655) and non-dance female students randomly chosen from the same school (n=1251). All the participants were asked to complete self-report questionnai

Irish dance is growing in popularity, evolving to a more athletic and demanding dance style. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review, previously registered with PROSPERO, to identify the prevalence, incidence, and the injury pattern among Irish dancers and analyse the associated risk factors. Six online databases and two dance-specific science publications were searched systematically. Studies were included if the patterns of injuries among Irish dancers were evaluated or the factors associated with injury were analysed, published in English or Portuguese, in peer-reviewed scie

BACKGROUND: We report on a first case of lichen planopilaris (LPP) mimicking androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in an individual who has been break-dancing on his head for many years. LPP is an autoimmune inflammatory scalp condition that when left untreated can result in scarring and irreversible hair loss. The etiology of LPP is unknown. Different treatment modalities are used for LPP and AGA.
OBJECTIVE: To increase the awareness of physicians to the possibility of scarring hair loss (LPP) presenting like AGA.
RESULTS: Scalp examination showed scarring patches of hair loss. A scalp biopsy confirm

Five patients with spontaneously recovering Dancing Eye Syndrome/Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome are described. Age at presentation ranged from 4 to 19 months. Four had symptoms of fever and a coryzal illness within days to a few weeks prior to the onset. One of the 4 also had varicella zoster 4 weeks before presentation. All had opsoclonus, myoclonus/ataxia and irritability. Associated infective agents identified were Coxsackie virus and rotavirus. Spontaneous improvement of symptoms started within 9 days of presentation and total duration of illness ranged from 10 to 24 days. Developmental pro

To create a deep web, a flap must be designed to have a high elongation effect in one direction along the mid-lateral line of the finger and also to have a shortening effect in the other direction, crossing at a right angle to the mid-lateral line. The dancing girl flap is a modification of a four-flap Z-plasty with two additional Z-plasties. It has a high elongation effect in one direction (>550%) and a shortening effect in the other direction at a right angle (<33%), creating a deep, U-shaped surface. This new flap can be used to release severe scar contracture with a web, and is most suitab

INTRODUCTION: Motor skills are integral to numerous developmental domains throughout infancy and childhood. In autism, motor impairments are prevalent and pervasive, often appearing before core symptoms. These motor difficulties have a cascading effect on a child's broader physical and psychological health, including social, cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning. Accordingly, researchers are increasingly interested in interventions that improve motor functioning, as these may have a downstream effect on broader developmental domains. One intervention that could address motor difficu

Background: Achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism, is a lifelong condition, and impacted persons often face issues of health and wellbeing. For this cohort, the effectiveness of arts-based programs, such as dance or augmented dance sessions, needs to be studied. Methods: For this nonequivalent comparison group quasi-experimental study, the impacts of dance sessions and augmented dance sessions (comprising added spiritual content), both delivered online, on the self-esteem and wellbeing outcomes of young adults with achondroplasia were compared. Results: Participants of the augmented

While Chinese dance is a popular dance genre among Chinese teenagers and adults, little is known regarding the prevalence of dance-related injuries or factors associated with such injuries among Chinese dance practitioners. The current cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of dance-related injuries and their associated risk factors among young Chinese dance practitioners in Hong Kong. Online surveys were distributed to dancers through local dance associations, while paper-based surveys were distributed to young Chinese dance performers during the 54th School Dance Festival in

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) participation provides opportunities for preschool-age children to improve motor skills. This is especially important for children born extremely preterm (EP) or extremely low birthweight (ELBW) who are at greater risk of motor impairment, and are participating less frequently in PA, compared with children born at term. There is limited evidence on improving PA participation for this population.
METHODS: This case series design study evaluated the feasibility of a Dance PaRticipation intervention for Extremely prEterm children with Motor Impairment at prEsch
