Upcity: Addressing Urban Problems Through an Integrated System.

Current technologies could potentially solve many of the urban problems in today's cities. Many cities already possess cameras, drones, thermometers, pollution air gauges, and other sensors. However, most of these have been designated for use in individual domains within City Hall, creating a maze of individual data domains that cannot connect to each other. This jumble of domains and stakeholders prevents collaboration and transparency. Cities need an integrated system in which data and dashboards can be shared by city administrators to better deal with urban problems that involve several sec

COVID-19 data reporting systems in Africa reveal insights for future pandemics.

Globally, countries have used diverse methods to report data during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using international guidelines and principles of emergency management, we compare national data reporting systems in African countries in order to determine lessons for future pandemics. We analyse COVID-19 reporting practices across 54 African countries through 2020. Reporting systems were diverse and included summaries, press releases, situation reports and online dashboards. These systems were communicated via social media accounts and websites belonging to ministries of health and public health. Data

Improving patient safety with triple-scan technology for insulin pen administration.

PURPOSE: High-alert medications such as insulin pose serious risks to patients when used in error. In response to vulnerabilities identified in existing insulin administration workflows, we implemented a comprehensive approach to mitigate the risk of errors in the hospital setting. SUMMARY: A new electronic health record capability, referred to as the "triple-scan system," was introduced to enhance insulin pen administration safety. This system requires nurses to scan the patient's wristband barcode, the insulin pen manufacturer's barcode, and the pharmacy's linking label barcode applied to t

Digitization of rehabilitation evaluation and activity monitoring using thermography: protocol for a mixed-methods randomized multiple baseline study in inpatient rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Patients in inpatient rehabilitation spend significant time of their day in sedentary activities, limiting recovery potential. Current monitoring relies on manual, intermittent nursing observations that are labor-intensive and produce fragmented data. Thermography-based artificial intelligence (AI) monitoring offers a privacy-preserving, continuous alternative; however, its impact on rehabilitation engagement when combined with patient-facing feedback has not been rigorously evaluated. Conventional pre-post and parallel-group designs are poorly suited for ward-level digital health

Development of an interactive web dashboard to facilitate the reexamination of pathology reports for instances of underbilling of CPT codes.

Current Procedural Terminology Codes is a numerical coding system used to bill for medical procedures and services and crucially, represents a major reimbursement pathway. Given that pathology services represent a consequential source of hospital revenue, understanding instances where codes may have been misassigned or underbilled is critical. Several algorithms have been proposed that can identify improperly billed CPT codes in existing datasets of pathology reports. Estimation of the fiscal impacts of these reports requires a coder (i.e., billing staff) to review the original reports and man

Towards an Analytical System for Supervising Fairness, Robustness, and Dataset Shifts in Health AI.

Ensuring trustworthy use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) requires continuous evaluation of their performance and fairness, given the potential impact on patient safety and individual rights as high-risk AI systems. However, the practical implementation of health AI performance and fairness monitoring dashboards presents several challenges. Confusion-matrix-derived performance and fairness metrics are non-additive and cannot be reliably aggregated or disaggregated across time or population subgroups. Furthermore, acquiring ground-truth labels or s

A User-Centered Data Visualization of Atherosclerotic Heart Disease Risk Factors.

High cholesterol levels significantly contribute to the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD), with a notable portion of ischemic heart disease cases linked to elevated cholesterol levels. Effective graphical displays of lipid panel tests and other cardiac risk factors are crucial for quick and accurate data interpretation, enabling early intervention for individuals with hyperlipidemia. Applying design theories such as Gestalt and distributed cognitive theories is essential for creating user-centered graphical data displays in the context of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. T

Implementation of data triangulation and dashboard development for COVID-19 vaccine adverse event following immunisation (AEFI) data in Nigeria.

Nigeria began administering COVID-19 vaccines on 5 March 2021 and is working towards the WHO's African regional goal to fully vaccinate 70% of their eligible population by December 2022. Nigeria's COVID-19 vaccination information system includes a surveillance system for COVID-19 adverse events following immunisation (AEFI), but as of April 2021, AEFI data were being collected and managed by multiple groups and lacked routine analysis and use for action. To fill this gap in COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring, between April 2021 and June 2022, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
