Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory, demyelinating central nervous system disease with time and space disseminated lesions that usually occurs in young adults, typically aged between 20 and 45 years. Recently, researches have indicated MS may be associated with increased risk of fracture and osteoporosis. In this review, we aim to identify the fracture risk in MS patients, also address the pathogenic mechanisms and interventions of fracture in those patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A recent Cochrane systematic review of surgical interventions for trigeminal neuralgia found not a single trial of what is becoming the most popular surgical intervention, namely microvascular decompression (MVD). With an increasing number of anticonvulsant drugs it is likely that patients may not be offered a surgical option for management of their trigeminal neuralgia for many years.
RECENT FINDINGS: Current studies repeat much of what is already in the literature but there is an increasing appreciation of the value of preoperative imaging and the need to be more precise

BACKGROUND: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by tics and associated behavioral symptoms. Over the past decade, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been increasingly advocated as a reversible and controllable procedure for selected cases of GTS.
OBJECTIVE: We set out to answer 2 clinically relevant questions: what patients with GTS should be treated with DBS and what is the best target?
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review of the published studies of DBS in GTS and critically evaluated the current evidence for both patien

BACKGROUND: Prevention of disability (POD) is one of the key objectives of leprosy programmes. Recently, coverage and access have been identified as the priority issues in POD. Assessing the cost-effectiveness of POD interventions is highly relevant to understanding the barriers and opportunities to achieving universal coverage and access with limited resources. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the quality of existing cost-effectiveness evidence and discuss implications for future research and strategies to prevent disability in leprosy and other disabling conditions.

The existing usage of disease names formed from the name of the parasite taxon is characterised by marked heterogeneity. This is largely due to the fact that, for coining disease names, four different suffixes, '-osis', '-iosis', '-asis' and '-iasis', are being used inconsistently. The result is that alternative terms are in use for naming the same disease, e.g. trypanosomosis and trypanosomiasis, fasciolosis and fascioliasis, ascariosis and ascariasis. Inspite of the SNOAPAD/SNOPAD guideline (1988) which proposed the principles of a uniform and standard disease nomenclature, the actual usage

PubMed provides free access via the Internet to more than 23 million records, of which over 19 million are from the MEDLINE database of journal articles. PubMed also provides access to other databases, such as the NCBI Bookshelf. To perform a basic search, you can simply enter the search terms or the concept that you are looking for in the search box. However, taking care to clarify your key concepts may save much time later on, because a non-specific search is likely to produce an overwhelming number of result hits. One way to make your search more specific is to specify which field you want

HaNDLE-on-QoL (Head And Neck Database Listing Evidence on QoL) is a searchable database that comprises abstracts of papers that have used questionnaires to report on quality of life (QoL) in patients with cancer of the head and neck. It can be searched by title, first author, year of publication, words used in the abstract, site of cancer, study design, and questionnaires used. The aim of this paper was to summarise its contents. In May 2017 we searched the website using the criteria above. It contained 1498 papers (including 149 reviews), and the number is increasing each year. Most studies c

BACKGROUND: Applying vancomycin into the surgical site has been well-described in spinal neurosurgery, with extensive institutional experience and systematic reviews describing its effectiveness in reducing surgical site infections (SSIs). Its use in nonspinal neurosurgical procedures is a logical extension of those findings; however, recent studies have described varying degrees of success. We have summarized the effect of local vancomycin application on SSIs in nonspinal neurosurgical procedures and describe the quality of the supporting evidence.

BACKGROUND: About 30% of regular cannabis users report withdrawal symptoms on cessation of prolonged use, such as irritability, insomnia, decreased appetite, depressed mood, anxiety, and restlessness. However, among highly dependent and/or in-treatment users, the incidence of withdrawal can be even higher, reaching up to 50-95% of individuals. This syndrome was only recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) as a diagnosis with specific criteria in 2013. The treatment options are poor, with high rates of relapse and non-responders. In this scen

BACKGROUND: Given the well documented and undesired impact of diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB), there is a need to create a statistical inventory of research output on DPB. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze different trends in publication over time, with technological additions.
METHODS: Articles indexed in MEDLINE regarding DPB were retrieved using PubMed. Citation results were categorized by article type, year of publication, language, and country.
RESULTS: A total of 657 publications, published between 1969 and 2017 were retrieved from PubMed; the year with the highest numbe

STUDY DESIGN: Evidence-based systematic review.
OBJECTIVES: To define the optimal treatment of fractures involving the C2 body, including those with concomitant injuries, based upon a systematic review of the literature.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Axis body fractures have customarily been treated nonoperatively, but there are some injuries that may require operative intervention. High-quality literature is sparse and there are few class I or class II studies to guide treatment decisions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Central Regis

In patients with juvenile dermatomyositis/polymyositis (JDM/PM), malignancy is a rare phenomenon. An extensive workup for neoplastic disease is not routinely indicated, but should be considered if unusual physical findings are noted at JDM/PM diagnosis or during follow-up period. The objective of this literature review was to assess for any association between, and disease profile of, JDM/PM and lymphoma in childhood. Risk determinants of the possible development of lymphoma in the pediatric population with JDM/PM appear to be the degree and duration of inflammatory activity with chronic B-cel

Psychosis is one of the debilitating non-motor symptoms (NMS) of Parkinson's disease (PD). Cognitive impairment is considered to be a risk factor for emergence of psychosis in PD. Early detection of relevant cognitive impairment may serve as a predictor for development of psychosis, with implications for prevention and early intervention. However, the exact pattern of cognitive impairment associated with psychosis is not clear. In this article, we aim to critically review the literature on case-control studies in PD patients with and without psychosis in order to understand the pattern of cogn

Depression, the most prevalent psychiatric disorder, has a lifelong risk of 20% and is related to high rates of death among the patients. Thus, this study aims to conduct a systematic review of changes in executive functions of adult patients diagnosed with depression. We found 1381 articles; however, only 28 were selected and recovered. The inclusion criteria was the assessment of executive functions with at least one neuropsychological test, and articles that evaluated primarily adult individuals with depression, without comparison to other psychiatric disorders. Although most of the studies

Meningioma is the second most common type of adult intracranial neoplasm. A substantial subset of patients present with peritumoral brain edema (PTBE), which can cause significant morbidity via mass effect, complicate surgical management, and impact the safety of stereotactic radiosurgery. Recent studies suggest a close relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) expression and PTBE development in meningiomas. The authors performed a systematic review of the literature on the pathogenesis of PTBE in meningiomas, the effectiveness of steroid therapy, the role played by VE

UNLABELLED: People with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have a higher risk of painful medical conditions. Partly because of the impaired ability to communicate about it, pain is often undertreated. To strengthen pain assessment in this population, we conducted a systematic review to identify behavioral pain indicators in people with IDs by using Embase, PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Cochrane. Inclusion criteria were 1) scientific papers; 2) published in the last 20 years, that is, 1992 to 2012; 3) written in English, 4) using human subjects, 5) intellectual disabilities, 6) pain, 7) behavior,

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is a very common disorder and proving that there is a relationship to another common movement disorder, Parkinson's disease (PD), has been debated for years.
METHODS: Review of the literature for links between ET and PD primarily focused on neuropathology as well as neurochemistry, epidemiology, genetics, olfactory function, and neuroimaging.
RESULTS: While there may be some evidence to suggest an increase in occurrence of PD in people who were previously diagnosed with ET, neuropathologic studies of ET with similarly assessed control subjects do not find an
