[Death certificate data in France: Production process and main types of analyses].

Mortality data, by the unambiguity of their definition and understanding by all stakeholders, and completeness of registration, are a cornerstone of public health statistics in France and in most industrialized countries. This article describes the data production process, and the main types of possible analyses. Data production is composed of different stages: death certification by a medical doctor on paper or electronic (using a web application) format, data transmission to Inserm, capture and coding of information. The encoding of the information follows the WHO recommendations of the Inte

Using death certificate reports to find severe leptospirosis cases, Brazil.

Severe leptospirosis with pulmonary hemorrhage is emerging globally. Measures to control leptospirosis through sanitation depend on accurate case finding and reporting. Rapid death certificate reporting, plus necropsy of persons who died of leptospirosis, facilitates public health intervention and could provide an important tool in assessing the global burden of leptospirosis.

Improving US maternal mortality reporting by analyzing literal text on death certificates, United States, 2016-2017.

Changes in data collection and processing of US maternal mortality data across states over time have led to inconsistencies in maternal death reporting. Our purpose was to identify possible misclassification of maternal deaths and to apply alternative coding methods to improve specificity of maternal causes. We analyzed 2016-2017 US vital statistics mortality data with cause-of-death literals (actual words written on the death certificate) added. We developed an alternative coding strategy to code the "primary cause of death" defined as the most likely cause that led to death. We recoded death

Automatic classification of free-text medical causes from death certificates for reactive mortality surveillance in France.

BACKGROUND: Mortality surveillance is of fundamental importance to public health surveillance. The real-time recording of death certificates, thanks to Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS), provides valuable data for reactive mortality surveillance based on medical causes of death in free-text format. Reactive mortality surveillance is based on the monitoring of mortality syndromic groups (MSGs). An MSG is a cluster of medical causes of death (pathologies, syndromes or symptoms) that meets the objectives of early detection and impact assessment of public health events. The aim of this s

Accuracy of death certificates: a population-based, complete-coverage, one-year autopsy study in East Germany.

The Goerlitz Autopsy Study is a population-based autopsy study, conducted in 1987 in the municipality of Goerlitz, population 78,484, in former East Germany. It is unique in that 1,023 (96.5 percent) of the 1,060 subjects who died in the municipality over a period of one year were investigated by full autopsy. An underlying cause was assigned to every death, using the procedures recommended by the International Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death, ninth revision, German edition. Assignment of cause of death was done independently by the attending clinician and the patholog

Identifying maternal deaths with the use of hospital data versus death certificates: a retrospective population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of maternal deaths is paramount for audit and policy purposes. Our aim was to determine the accuracy and completeness of data on maternal deaths in hospital and those recorded on a death certificate, and the level of agreement between the 2 data sources. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based study using data for Ontario, Canada, from Apr. 1, 2002, to Dec. 31, 2015. We used Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) databases to identify deaths during inpatient, emergency department and same-day surgery encounters. We captured Vital St

Specific causes of death in patients with bullous pemphigoid as measured by death certificate data: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mortality rates in patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) are higher than those in age-matched counterparts. However, the specific causes of death in BP subjects have not been evaluated systematically. OBJECTIVES: We sought to characterize the causes of death in patients with BP as recorded by death certificate and to compare these with death data for age- and location-matched control subjects. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort analysis conducted in a large tertiary referral center. Twenty-seven participants who had a confirmed antemortem diagnosis of BP, were residents of

Accuracy in certification of cause of death in a tertiary care hospital--a retrospective analysis.

Every physician is duty bound to issue a "Cause of Death" certificate in the unfortunate event death of his/her patient. Incomplete and inaccurate entry in these certificates poses difficulty in obtaining reliable information pertaining to causes of mortality, leads to faulty public health surveillance, and causes hindrance in research. This study intends to evaluate the completeness and accuracy of Medical Certification of Cause of Death in our Institute and to formulate strategy to improve the quality of reporting of cause of death. During the period from January 2012 to December 2012, a tot

Validating population-based registers for ALS: how accurate is death certification?

The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of death certification for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)/motor neuron disease (MND) as recorded by the Central Statistics Office in the Republic of Ireland, and to examine its utility in capture-recapture analysis. The database of the Irish Central Statistics Office (CSO) was searched for death certificates of individuals over 15 years of age for whom ALS/MND (ICD9) was listed as a primary, secondary or tertiary cause of death from 2002 to 2006. This dataset was compared with mortality data from the Irish Register for ALS/MND for th

Accuracy of death certification and hospital record linkage for identification of incident stroke.

BACKGROUND: There is little information on the validity of using record linkage with routinely collected data for case ascertainment of stroke in large population-based studies in the UK. We examined the accuracy of these routine record linkage approaches for identifying incident stroke cases in a large UK population-based study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Norfolk cohort. METHODS: We examined a sample of hospital records of incident stroke cases identified by linkage with two routine data sources, death certificates and a national hospital record linkage system

Iatrogenic deaths following treatment for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy: case reports and an approach to the autopsy and death certification.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease process which results in a large, heavy heart, with hypertrophy of the interventricular septum (IVS) and left ventricle. HCM accounts for a significant number of cases of sudden cardiac death each year, most infamously in young athletes. The prevalence of the disease has increased over the past several years due to advances in clinical diagnosis and molecular genetic studies. Over this same period, new forms of treatment also have emerged. One such treatment is alcohol septal ablation (ASA). ASA is a procedure performed by a cardiologist, via card

Cause-of-death query in validation of death certification by expert panel; effects on mortality statistics in Finland, 1995.

The correctness of selection, coding and registration of underlying cause-of-death is important for the quality of mortality statistics. One measure to improve quality is the query to the certifier for verification of the underlying cause-of-death. In Finland, 3478 death certificates, 7.1% of total 49074 certifications in 1995, were considered questionable by statisticians. The expert panel at Statistics Finland was able to resolve 2813 (80.9%) of them. However, 665 (19.1%) certificates needed to be further queried from the certifier. Of these, 318 (47.8%) were re-assigned to another ICD-9 cat

Validation of death certificate diagnosis of out-of-hospital coronary heart disease deaths in Olmsted County, Minnesota.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity of death certificate diagnosis of out-of-hospital (OOH) coronary heart disease (CHD) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in Olmsted County, Minnesota, between 1981 and 1994. METHODS: In this review of the medical records, autopsy reports, and coroner's files, OOH deaths with heart disease as the underlying cause of death on the death certificate were classified into CHD (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification [ICD-9-CM] codes 410-414) and non-CHD (other ICD-9-CM heart disease codes) deaths. A 10% random sample (n = 174) of

Heterogeneity in proportional cardiovascular co-listing on cancer death certificates in the United States: a national multiple cause-of-death analysis, 1999-2020.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer share common risk factors, and cancer survivors experience elevated long-term cardiotoxicity. Traditional risk-based metrics require person-time denominators that are unavailable in aggregate public health databases. This study introduces a proportional co-listing framework to detect population-level cardiovascular surveillance signals on death certificates across cancer types and demographic strata. METHODS: We conducted a national cross-sectional surveillance analysis using CDC WONDER Multiple Cause-of-Death data from 1999 to 2020 for dece

Occupational risk factors for cancer of the gastric cardia. Analysis of death certificates from 24 US states.

We evaluated the risk of gastric cardia cancer by occupation and industry in a case-control study using information from death certificates for 24 US states in 1984-1992. One thousand fifty-six cases of gastric cardia cancer were identified among men aged 20 years or more, including 1,023 whites and 33 blacks. Controls were 5,280 subjects who died of nonmalignant diseases, 5:1 matched to cases by geographic region, race, gender, and 5-year age group. Among white men, occupations with elevated risk included financial managers (odds ratio [OR] = 6.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-28.8), jani

The Effect of Incomplete Death Certificates on Estimates of Unintentional Opioid-Related Overdose Deaths in the United States, 1999-2015.

OBJECTIVES: A complete and accurate count of the number of opioid-related overdose deaths is essential to properly allocate resources. We determined the rate of unintentional overdose deaths (non-opioid-related, opioid-related, or unspecified) in the United States and by state from 1999 to 2015 and the possible effects of underreporting on national estimates of opioid abuse. METHODS: We abstracted unintentional drug overdose deaths ( International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes X40-X44) with contributory drug-specific T codes (T36.0-T50.9) from the Mortality Multiple Cause M

Risk factors for hospital death in conditions needing palliative care: Nationwide population-based death certificate study.

BACKGROUND: Most people would prefer to die at home as opposed to hospital; therefore, understanding mortality patterns by place of death is essential for health resources allocation. AIM: We examined trends and risk factors for hospital death in conditions needing palliative care in a country without integrated palliative care. DESIGN: This is a death certificate study. We examined factors associated with hospital death using logistic regression. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: All adults (1,045,381) who died between 2003 and 2012 in Portugal were included. Redistribution of heart failure deaths using two methods: linkage of hospital records with death certificate data and multiple causes of death data.

Heart failure is considered a garbage code when assigned as the underlying cause of death. Reassigning garbage codes to plausible causes reduces bias and increases comparability of mortality data. Two redistribution methods were applied to Brazilian data, from 2008 to 2012, for decedents aged 55 years and older. In the multiple causes of death method, heart failure deaths were redistributed based on the proportion of underlying causes found in matched deaths that had heart failure listed as an intermediate cause. In the hospitalization data method, heart failure deaths were redistributed based

Neurodegenerative Disease Death Certification Among National Football League Players With Dementia.

IMPORTANCE: Researchers frequently use death certificate data to evaluate occupational risks among National Football League (NFL) players, demonstrating elevated neurodegenerative mortality risk. Robust epidemiologic data suggest deaths attributable to neurodegenerative disease (NDD) are frequently underreported on death certificates, leading to substantial underascertainment of neurodegenerative mortality. Better characterization of the factors underlying neurodegenerative death certification is critical to addressing underreporting of NDDs, informing disease surveillance and resource allocat
