[Allergy to squid and acari in a child].

UNLABELLED: Anaphylactic reactions after consumption of squid by patients sensitized to house dust mites have been reported several times. CASE REPORT: A child allergic to dust mites developed an angioneurotic edema after eating squid. An immunoallergological assessment, including the prick test, labial test and IgE RAST revealed an allergy associated to both dust mites and squid. CONCLUSIONS: In light of the potential seriousness of anaphylactic reactions, parents of children allergic to dust mites and these children should be made aware of the increased risk of allergies to squid that they

The significance of the linkage between the Bohr and Haldane effects in cephalopod bloods.

This study concerns the physiological implications of the theoretical identity between the Bohr and Haldane effects in the hemocyanin containing blood from the cephalopods Loligo forbesii and Sepia officinalis. The Bohr factor is for both species lower than -1.0. The functional Haldane coefficient (delta ctCO2/delta cHcO2)pH ranges from -2.0 to -0.9 mMCO2/mMO2 in S. officinalis and from -1.2 to -0.7 mMCO2/mMO2 in L. forbesii. This implies for S. officinalis that there may not be enough protons produced from aerobic metabolism to facilitate the release of O2 from HcO2 via the pH sensitivity of

Further studies of periodic miniature response in squid giant axons.

Electric responses of extremely small amplitudes (1-30 muV peak-to-peak) repeating with more-or-less definite periodicity could be induced by a variety of chemical stimulants applied to squid giant axons either extracellularly or intracellularly. The chemical stimulants studied include allethrin, aminopyridines, N-bromosuccinimide, dimethylamino-pyridine, glutaraldehyde, osmium tetroxide, parachloromercuribenzoate, rose bengal, scorpion venoms and veratridine. With several mild stimulants, it was possible to evoke periodic miniature responses unaccompanied by a fall in the resting membrane pot

Larval ascaridoid nematodes in horned and musky octopus (Eledone cirrhosa and E. moschata) and longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii): Safety and quality implications for cephalopod products sold as fresh on the Italian market.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence, infection level and distribution of ascaridoid larvae in cephalopod products sold in Italy. Data on the species most commonly commercialized as whole and fresh on the Italian market were collected. After comparing commercial and literature data, Eledone spp., comprising E. cirrhosa and E. moschata (horned octopus and musky octopus, respectively) and Doryteuthis pealeii (longfin inshore squid) were selected, as they had been rarely investigated. Overall, 75 Eledone spp. caught in the Mediterranean Sea (FAO area 37) and 70 D. pealeii from the

A foodborne outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus associated with cross-contamination from squid in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Water-borne diseases caused by Vibrio parahemolyticus are often known to cause gastritis when raw or undercooked seafood is eaten. It is very rare that Vibrio gastritis caused by ingesting non-seafood products occurs on a large scale. On September 19, 2017, a large-scale Vibrio gastritis occurred after the city residents consumed food at a bazaar held in a welfare center in Jungnang-gu, Seoul. METHODS: The total number of visitors was approximately 299, and 237 (79.3%) of them showed symptoms. Among those who showed symptoms, 116 (48.9%) consulted the hospital, and 53 (45.6%) were

Aposymbiotic culture of the sepiolid squid Euprymna scolopes: role of the symbiotic bacterium Vibrio fischeri in host animal growth, development, and light organ morphogenesis.

The sepiolid squid Euprymna scolopes forms a bioluminescent mutualism with the luminous bacterium Vibrio fischeri, harboring V. fischeri cells in a complex ventral light organ and using the bacterial light in predator avoidance. To characterize the contribution of V. fischeri to the growth and development of E. scolopes and to define the long-term effects of bacterial colonization on light organ morphogenesis, we developed a mariculture system for the culture of E. scolopes from hatching to adulthood, employing artificial seawater, lighting that mimicked that of the natural environment, and pr

Polymeric N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (chitin) induces histionic activation in dogs.

Analyses on the effects of polymeric N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (chitin), which was obtained from squid pen, on histiogenic activation in dogs were carried out with subcutaneous implants (5 x 5 cm2) of polyester non-woven fabric (NWF) supplemented with chitin (chitin group) and NWF (control group). These materials were implanted at 4 sites, on the lumbodorsal and lumbosacral subcutaneous tissues on both sides of the midline in each dog under general anesthesia. The implants and their surrounding tissues were isolated on post-implantation days (PIDs) 2, 4, 8, and 18 under general anesthesia. In the

Differences between the actions of thiopental and pentobarbital in squid giant axons.

The action of thiopental and pentobarbital on the giant nerve fiber of the squid Doryteuthis plei under membrane potential control conditions was investigated. The effect of pentobarbital was found to be similar to that reported by other investigators, however, the replacement of the oxygen in C2 by a sulfur atom bestows excitatory properties on the molecule. Thiopental depolarizes the nerve fibers and produces spontaneous repetitive discharges. With concentrations (0.2 mM) of thiopental, the amplitude of the action potential, spontaneous or otherwise, does not change much, but its falling pha

Squid-Inspired Multifunctional Retainable Magnetic Soft Robot: Foreign Body Transport and Transmucosal Drug Delivery in Complex Gastrointestinal Environments.

Magnetically controlled soft microrobots, by virtue of their exceptional flexibility and noninvasiveness, exhibit immense potential in the field of minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment within complex physiological environments. However, existing microrobot research is largely limited to the integration of single functions, and often faces bottlenecks such as insufficient pinpointing ability and difficulty in transmucosal drug delivery when encountering slippery and dynamic biological barriers like the gastrointestinal tract. Here, inspired by the grasping, jetting, and adhesive character

Relationship between seawater temperature, brain GnRH-like peptide expression, and gonadal development in wild bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana).

BACKGROUND: Cephalopods are widely distributed in oceans worldwide and are important fishery resources. Most species have a lifespan of approximately one year and die after reproduction. In cephalopods, gonadal development may be influenced by seawater temperature; however, the endocrine mechanisms underlying reproductive maturity remain unclear. In recent years, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-like peptide has been identified in invertebrates, including cephalopods, as a possible endocrine regulator, similar to their role in vertebrates. Nevertheless, knowledge of its specific functions

Structural differences between chitin and chitosan extracted from three different marine sources.

Three marine sources of chitin from Tunisia were investigated. Structural differences between α-chitin from shrimp (Penaeus kerathurus) waste, crab (Carcinus mediterraneus) shells, and β-chitin from cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) bones were studied by the (13)C NMR, FTIR, and XRD diffractograms. The (13)C NMR analysis showed a splitting of the C3 and C5 carbon signals for α-chitin, while that of β-chitin was merged into a single resonance. The bands contour of deconvoluted and curve-fit FTIR spectra showed a more detailed structure of α-chitin in the region of O-H, N-H and CO stretching region

Squid nerve Na+/Ca2+ exchanger expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae: up-regulation by a phosphorylated cytosolic protein (ReP1-NCXSQ) is identical to that of native exchanger in situ.

This work shows, for the first time, a properly metabolically regulated squid nerve Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger (NCXSQ1) heterologous expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The exchanger was fused to the enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP) on its C-terminus and had two tags, a Strep-tag II and 6 histidines, added to the N-terminal region (ST-6HB-NCXSQ1-eGFP). The eGFP fluorescence signal co-localized with that of the plasma membrane marker FM1-43 in whole cells that displayed an uptake of Ca(2+) with the expected characteristics of the reverse Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchange mode. Similar to squid ner

Calmodulin regulates fast axonal transport of squid axoplasm organelles.

The role of calmodulin (CaM) in organelle motility (fast axonal transport) in the axoplasm of the squid giant axon was evaluated directly using video-enhanced microscopy. Addition of 6 microM CaM to extruded squid axoplasm produced a 2.6-fold increase in the number of organelles moving per minute per unit area of axoplasm. When lower concentrations of CaM, including physiological concentration (2 micrograms/ml), were added to extruded axoplasm, the number of organelles moving was equally increased. CaM had no significant effect on the mean velocity of organelle translocations. The stimulatory

Dual effects of internal n-alkyltrimethylammonium ions on the sodium current of the squid giant axon.

The actions of members of the homologous series of alkyl cations CH3 (CH2)n-1 N+ (CH3)3 (Cn TMA) on the sodium current in giant axons of Loligo forbesi have been investigated. The substances tested correspond to n = 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. These cations only produced significant sodium current suppression when applied inside the axon. Actions on first-pulse sodium currents and use-dependent effects were separately studied. The shorter members of the series (C6TMA and C8TMA) produced suppression of first-pulse sodium currents without causing significant use dependence. The first-pulse suppress

Excitable channel currents and gating times in the presence of anticonvulsants ethosuximide and valproate.

The effects of the anticonvulsants ethosuximide and valproate on the excitable Na and K channels of the squid giant axon are evaluated and compared. The drugs are highly specific in their effects on channel gating and ion permeability with regard to the membrane side of application. Both drugs when applied internally affect Na activation gating in ways that lead to the conclusion that they do not act as channel blockers. However, external ethosuximide is clearly a voltage-independent Na channel blocker with no effect on channel gating. On the K channel, ethosuximide appears to have a mixed act

Blockade of synaptic transmission in the squid giant synapse by a spider toxin (JSTX).

We studied the effect of spider toxin (JSTX)--specific blocker of glutamate receptor--on giant synapse of the squid stellate ganglion. JSTX irreversibly blocked the excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) without affecting the presynaptic action potential or the antidromic action potential. L-glutamate depolarized the postsynaptic membrane and suppressed EPSP which may be due to desensitization. The action of glutamate was completely blocked in the presence of JSTX. The results suggest that glutamate is the transmitter at the giant synapse of squid.
