Murine Glut-1 transporter haploinsufficiency: postnatal deceleration of brain weight and reactive astrocytosis.

Glucose transporter type 1 (Glut-1) facilitates glucose flux across the blood-brain-barrier. In humans, Glut-1 deficiency causes acquired microcephaly, seizures and ataxia, which are recapitulated in our Glut-1 haploinsufficient mouse model. Postnatal brain weight deceleration and development of reactive astrogliosis were significant by P21 in Glut-1(+/-) mice. The brain weight differences remained constant after P21 whereas the reactive astrocytosis continued to increase and peaked at P90. Brain immunoblots showed increased phospho-mTOR and decreased phospho-GSK3-beta by P14. After fasting, t

Diagnosis and management of acute aortic valvular disruption secondary to rapid-deceleration trauma.

Acute aortic valve rupture with resultant aortic insufficiency is a rare complication of blunt trauma. We describe a case in which a patient fell 70 feet, sustaining avulsion of two leaflets of the aortic valve along with multiple other injuries, primarily orthopedic. Our case demonstrates that patients with acute aortic regurgitation can be managed nonoperatively if necessary in the acute setting, enabling management of other significant trauma. Subsequent semielective valvular replacement may be undertaken if other injuries must take precedence.

Implications of prolonged fetal heart rate deceleration during the second stage of labor.

In order to evaluate the neonatal outcomes of infants who had prolonged fetal heart rate (FHR) deceleration during the second stage of labor, the neonatal outcomes of 24 infants born after vaginal delivery at 37 to 42 weeks of gestation with prolonged FHR deceleration during the second stage of labor were compared with the outcomes of 28 infants of a similar gestational age who had normal FHR patterns. No differences in the Apgar scores, mean umbilical PaCO2, PaO2, HCO3- or base deficit values were observed between the two groups, but the mean pH values differed significantly. The occurrences

Planetary health diet benefits brain health by decelerating biological aging.

Planetary Health Diet promotes well-being of both individuals and the planet; however, whether adherence to this diet benefits brain health is less known. Using data from the UK Biobank, we examined the association between the Planetary Health Diet and risk of brain disorders and if decelerated biological aging mediated this relationship. During a median follow-up of 148 months in 69,370 participants (mean (s.d.) age 55.79 (7.85) years, 54.63 % women), the highest adherence to the Planetary Health Diet (in the highest quartile of the Planetary Health Diet Index) was associated with a 12 % (haz

The myths and physiology surrounding intrapartum decelerations: the critical role of the peripheral chemoreflex.

A distinctive pattern of recurrent rapid falls in fetal heart rate, called decelerations, are commonly associated with uterine contractions during labour. These brief decelerations are mediated by vagal activation. The reflex triggering this vagal response has been variably attributed to a mechanoreceptor response to fetal head compression, to baroreflex activation following increased blood pressure during umbilical cord compression, and/or a Bezold-Jarisch reflex response to reduced venous return from the placenta. Although these complex explanations are still widespread today, there is no co

Decelerating spread of West Nile virus by percolation in a heterogeneous urban landscape.

Vector-borne diseases are emerging and re-emerging in urban environments throughout the world, presenting an increasing challenge to human health and a major obstacle to development. Currently, more than half of the global population is concentrated in urban environments, which are highly heterogeneous in the extent, degree, and distribution of environmental modifications. Because the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens is so closely coupled to the ecologies of vector and host species, this heterogeneity has the potential to significantly alter the dynamical systems through which pathogens pr

Is continuous monitoring the answer to incidentally observed fetal heart rate decelerations?

OBJECTIVE: We examined the interventions and outcomes of pre-term patients with an incidentally identified fetal heart rate (FHR) deceleration and otherwise reassuring FHR pattern admitted for continuous FHR monitoring (FM). METHODS: A case series was compiled of patients with at least 36 h of continuous FM secondary to a FHR deceleration. Data on demographics, delivery and perinatal outcomes, medical and obstetric history were extracted from medical records. FHR tracings were reviewed for quantity and type of decelerations. RESULTS: Ninety-seven patients met inclusion criteria. The median l

Fetal circulatory system in growth-retarded fetus with late decelerations and oligohydramnios.

We present 4 cases of growth-retarded fetuses with fetal heart rate late decelerations and oligohydramnios. Doppler ultrasound revealed significantly decreased pulsatility index (PI) values of the middle cerebral artery; however, the PI values of the renal artery, femoral artery and umbilical artery were within normal ranges in all fetuses. Relative redistributions in the fetal circulatory system were shown with fetal hypoxemia without acidosis.

Decelerated migration of neocortical neurones in explant culture after exposure to radiation.

We describe a newly devised explant culture system employing rat neocortex in which neurones migrate in a fashion similar to that seen in vivo. Using neocortical explant culture we have demonstrated an effect of ionizing radiation on neuronal migration at doses as low as 10 cGy together with a changing pattern of expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule N-CAM. After a dose of more than 10 cGy there was a significant reduction in N-CAM immunoreactivity in the matrix cell zone. We do not know the reason why the reduction in N-CAM immunoreactivity is so localized, although it is not unlike

Pinealectomy decelerates the circadian food intake rhythm of cervically sympathectomized rabbits.

Long-term records of the free-running food intake rhythms were obtained from 26 young adult blinded rabbits that were subjected in the course of recording to bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy (sympathectomy). This always resulted in acceleration of the rhythm (mean delta tau = -0.35 h). Some 4 months afterwards, 12 rabbits were pinealectomized and after another 4 months sham pinealectomized also. In the other 14 animals, these operations were performed in the reverse order. It appeared that suctioning away part of the ventricular walls during sham pinealectomy was followed by a slight

Saline amnioinfusion for relief of repetitive variable decelerations: a prospective randomized study.

A prospective randomized study was undertaken in order to further investigate the effect of intrauterine saline amnioinfusion for the relief of repetitive variable decelerations in the first stage of labor. Intrauterine saline amnioinfusion corrects the oligohydramnios that makes the cord more vulnerable to compression during uterine contractions. Included in this study were 96 patients who had repetitive variable decelerations not relieved either by changes in position or by oxygen. Randomization resulted in 49 patients in the infusion group and 47 patients in the noninfusion group. Relief of

Adalimumab-polyelectrolyte nanocomplexes decelerate synovial drug clearance ex vivo.

Intra-articular injections of biologicals, such as the TNF-α antibody adalimumab, can provide a locally concentrated and more effective therapy for osteoarthritis, with much less systemic side effects. These, however, suffer from an insufficient residence time in the joint cavity due to rapid elimination across the synovial membrane. The extracellular matrix of the synovium consists of a collagen network with enmeshed aggrecan galactosamine glycans, generating a high fixed negative charge density. This unique property can be exploited to design drug delivery systems that allow an extended resi

Nutritional associations with decelerated epigenetic aging: vegan diet in a Dutch population.

BACKGROUND: The 2021 Aging Report of the European Union projected significant increases in healthcare costs, with some member states expecting up to a 60% rise over the next 50 years, primarily due to an aging population and related diseases. Interventions targeting aging have been proposed to reduce this burden by extending healthspan. Recent evidence suggests that vegan diets may slow the aging process. RESULTS: Using data from the Netherlands Twin Register (n = 22,124), dietary habits of meat eaters (n = 21,614), pescetarians (n = 294), vegetarians (n = 194), and vegans (n = 22) were exami

Forces experienced at different levels of the musculoskeletal system during horizontal decelerations.

Horizontal decelerations are frequently performed during team sports and are closely linked to sports performance and injury. This study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the kinetic demands of decelerations at the whole-body, structural, and tissue-specific levels of the musculoskeletal system. Team-sports athletes performed maximal-effort horizontal decelerations whilst full-body kinematics and ground reaction forces (GRFs) were recorded. A musculoskeletal model was used to determine whole-body (GRFs), structural (ankle, knee, and hip joint moments and contact forces), and tissu

The association of intrapartum deceleration and acceleration areas with MRI findings in neonatal encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is an important contributor to disability worldwide. The current cardiotocography (CTG) predictive value for neonatal outcome is limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of intrapartum CTG deceleration and acceleration areas with early MRI cerebral pathology in infants with HIE. METHODS: Term and near-term low-risk pregnancies that resulted in HIE, treated with therapeutic hypothermia with sufficient CTG records from a single, tertiary hospital between 2013 and 2021 were enrolled. Accelerations and decelerations areas, their minimum and

Late-onset fetal cardiac decelerations associated with fetal breathing movements.

BACKGROUND: While late decelerations are regarded as signs of fetal hypoxemia, fetal breathing movements (FBM) associated with late decelerations invariably have normal outcomes. Could late decelerations sometimes represent FBM? MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients between 37 and 42 weeks' gestation with 'late decelerations' associated with FBM (by ultrasound or tocodynamometer) during ante- or intrapartum monitoring were evaluated. Three were at high risk (diabetes, postdates, intrauterine growth restriction) and three were at low-risk. RESULTS: 'Late decelerations' arose in previously reass

Amniotic fluid index and prolonged antepartum fetal heart rate decelerations.

Both prolonged fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations and decreased amounts of amniotic fluid (AF) have been associated with adverse fetal outcome. To determine whether adverse outcome could be predicted by a quantitative assessment of AF in patients with prolonged FHR decelerations, we identified 97 consecutive pregnancies found during antepartum testing to have prolonged FHR decelerations. A four-quadrant AF index was measured concurrently in 92 of these 97 patients. Women with an AF index less than 2 cm had operative intervention for fetal distress in seven of 11 cases (64%), compared with 17

Fetal heart rate decelerations after oxytocin infusion in an abdominal pregnancy.

Fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations during a contraction stress test are recognized as signs of possible uteroplacental insufficiency. Although these decelerations have been described commonly in intrauterine pregnancies, they have not been noted in extrauterine pregnancies. Reported herein are FHR decelerations associated with oxytocin infusion in an extrauterine pregnancy and a discussion of the possible pathophysiologic mechanisms.
