Most symptomatic distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) conditions result from derangements to several structures that may include the length, shape, and/or orientation of the articulating surfaces; the cartilage of the DRUJ and/or ulnocarpal joint; the DRUJ and/or ulnocarpal joint ligaments; and the extensor carpi ulnaris and/or pronator quadratus muscle. Once a complete diagnosis is made, often only one of these components is addressed, which results in suboptimal clinical outcomes. In this article, we present a treatment algorithm (the Four-Leaf Clover algorithm) to guide treatment of DRUJ patholog

INTRODUCTION: Pruritus ani is defined as a dermatologic disease characterized by itching and/or burning in the perianal area. It occurs in 15% of the population. Men are affected more frequently than women, in the ratio 4:1. It is accompanied by an irresistible desire to scratch in the perianal area. Pruritus ani is divided into two subtypes: primary (idiopathic) and secondary. In idiopathic (primary) pruritus it is not possible to detect any other cause of itching. Secondary pruritus has an obvious causal origin. The aim of this paper is to offer a complex overview of possible causes, diagnost

OBJECTIVE: To construct and evaluate a decision analytic model of proposed management strategies for HIV-infected patients presenting with cerebral mass lesions, radiographically compatible with toxoplasmosis, lymphoma, or other etiologies, assuming knowledge of Toxoplasma antibody status in serum.
METHODS: Using decision analysis, we evaluated two management strategies, for patients found to be either Toxoplasma-seropositive or -negative, for whom an initial choice was made for early brain biopsy (EB) or for empiric therapy with delayed biopsy (ETDB) of non-responders. The outcome to be opti

Dendrimers are highly branched, well-defined macromolecules characterized by exceptional structural precision and functional adaptability. These properties render dendrimers valuable in nanotechnology, drug delivery, and catalysis. However, selecting the most suitable dendrimer for drug delivery is difficult because its branching pattern, structural, and physicochemical properties are closely related. In this research, we utilized the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique to identify potential candidates for drug delivery applications among the four considered families: phosphorus-co

Oncology patients often face complex choices between treatment regimens with different risk-benefit ratios. The 4D PICTURE (Producing Improved Cancer Outcomes Through User-Centered Research) project aims to support patients, their families, and clinicians with these complex decisions by developing data-driven decision support tools (DSTs) for patients with breast cancer, prostate cancer, and melanoma as part of care path redesign using a methodology called MetroMapping. There are myriad ethical issues to consider as the project will create data-driven prognostic models and develop conversation

OBJECTIVES: To review the methods used to develop and integrate patient decision aids (PDAs) based on the recommendations of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs).
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a scoping review covering bibliographic databases (PubMed, Embase; searched until December 2023), gray literature, references, and expert consultations to identify eligible documents. Documents published from 2000 onwards and describing methods related to guideline-based PDA development or linking CPGs and PDAs were included. Two reviewers independently selected and analyzed the documents. Resul

AIMS: The harms arising from psychoactive drug use are complex, and harm reduction strategies should be informed by a detailed understanding of the extent and nature of that harm. Drug harm is also context specific, and so any comprehensive assessment of drug harm should be relevant to the characteristics of the population in question. This study aimed to evaluate and rank drug harms within Aotearoa New Zealand using a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework, and to separately consider harm within the total population, and among youth.
METHODS: Two facilitated workshops involved the

In this chapter we have examined the possibilities of screening endometriosis, both in the general population as well as in the target population. We then proposed decision trees, for primary and secondary care. Currently, there is not enough data in the literature to develop or organize a screening test for endometriosis. Screening for endometriosis is not recommended in the general population (level A). There is also no evidence to support systematic screening in a population with genetic risk factors (endometriosis in a relative), or with other clinical risk factors (increased menstrual vol

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis is a globally neglected tropical parasitic disease which affects individuals of all ages and leads to an altered lymphatic system and abnormal enlargement of body parts.
METHODS: A mathematical model of lymphatic filariaris with intervention strategies is developed and analyzed. Control of infections is analyzed within the model through medical treatment of infected-acute individuals and quarantine of infected-chronic individuals.
RESULTS: We derive the effective reproduction number, [Formula: see text] and its interpretation/investigation suggests that treat

The analytical result of a laboratory examination is a scientific fact and has no medical meaning as such. It must be interpreted to become a medical finding. To explain the very complex cognitive procedure of the interpretation a three-level model is used. In an environment of cost containment in health care systems the quality of medical laboratory findings is very important. Analytical results are monitored by quality control procedures. For measuring the performance of medical findings the concept of the 'validity' of a laboratory test is used. Validity means the 'degree of achieving the o

BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making (SDM), which increases the patient's well-being, adherence, and success of treatment, is becoming increasingly important in medicine and especially in oncology. To empower patients to participate more actively in consultations with their physicians decision aids have been developed. In non-curative settings, such as the treatment of advanced lung cancer, decisions differ substantially from the curative setting, as uncertain gains in terms of survival outcomes and quality of life have to be weighed against the severe side effects of treatment regimens. There i

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The BRASA patient decision aid (BRASA-PtDA) facilitates shared decision making for breast cancer patients (BCPs) facing a radiotherapy treatment decision. During evaluations, patients indicated the wish for quantitative information on side effects. Therefore, this study assessed BCPs opinion on which and how information on side effects should be incorporated in the BRASA-PtDA.
METHODS: A workshop was organized with BCPs (n = 9), researchers (n = 5) and clinicians (n = 3). Subsequently, a survey was sent to BCPs (n = 744) investigating the generalisability of the workshop f

BACKGROUND: A shared decision-making model is preferred for engaging prostate cancer patients in treatment decisions. However, the process of assessing an individual's preferences and values is challenging and not formalized. The purpose of this study is to develop an automated decision aid for patient-centric treatment decision-making using decision analysis, preference thresholds and value elicitations to maximize the compatibility between a patient's treatment expectations and outcome.
METHODS: A template for patient-centric medical decision-making was constructed. The inputs included pros

BACKGROUND: In Japanese medical practice, older stroke survivors are overwhelmed with information regarding their discharge locations, creating more decision-making challenges. A randomized controlled trial evaluated the influence of decision aids (DAs) for matching older stroke patients and their families' values concerning decisional conflict and participation in discharge destination decisions.
METHODS: Participants were randomly allocated to intervention and control groups. The intervention spanned two months, from admission to discharge, at which times participants were surveyed. DAs wer

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 5%-10% of new rectal cancers are locally advanced (locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC)) at presentation with 4%-8% recurring (locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC)) after initial treatment. Patients with potentially curable disease have to consider many trade-offs when considering major exenterative surgery. There are no decision tools for these patients and current resources have found to not meet minimum international standards. The overall aim of this study is to produce a validated patient decision aid (PtDA) to assist patients considering radical pelvic exen

BACKGROUND: Decisions aids (DA) can support patients to make informed decisions about screening tests. This study describes the development and initial evaluation of a lung cancer screening (LCS) DA targeted towards survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL).
METHODS: A prototype decision aid booklet was developed and subsequently reviewed by a steering group who provided feedback. Revisions were made to produce the DA tested in this study. HL survivors were recruited to an online survey and/or focus groups. Lymphoma practitioners were invited to an interview study. In the online survey, decisional c

BACKGROUND: We developed a decision aid (DA) to help pregnant women and their partners make informed decisions about prenatal screening for trisomy. We aimed to determine its usefulness for preparing for decision-making and its acceptability among end-users.
METHODS: In this mixed-methods pilot study, we recruited participants in three prenatal care settings in Quebec City. Eligible women were over 18 and more than 16 weeks pregnant or had given birth recently. We asked them about the usefulness of the DA using an interview grid based on the Technology Acceptance Model.
