Nudge theory and gambling: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorder (GD) is a pressing public health concern with significant societal costs. The recently developed nudge theory, which is rooted in behavioral economics, aims to influence the decision-making behaviors of individuals by implementing changes in the environment. AIM: This scoping review aims to synthesize the literature on nudge theory as it relates to gambling. METHODS: This scoping review accords with the Arksey and O'Malley framework, as refined by Levac et al. It includes only articles from peer-reviewed journals that focus, as main themes, on both nudge theory

Ambush strategy enhances organisms' performance in rock-paper-scissors games.

We study a five-species cyclic system wherein individuals of one species strategically adapt their movements to enhance their performance in the spatial rock-paper-scissors game. Environmental cues enable the awareness of the presence of organisms targeted for elimination in the cyclic game. If the local density of target organisms is sufficiently high, individuals move towards concentrated areas for direct attack; otherwise, they employ an ambush tactic, maximising the chances of success by targeting regions likely to be dominated by opponents. Running stochastic simulations, we discover that

Autonomy and social influence in predictive genetic testing decision-making: A qualitative interview study.

Beauchamp and Childress' definition of autonomous decision-making includes the conditions of intentionality, understanding, and non-control. In genetics, however, a relational conception of autonomy has been increasingly recognized. This article aims to empirically assess aspects of social influence in genetic testing decision-making and to connect these with principlist and relational theories of autonomy. We interviewed 18 adult genetic counsellees without capacity issues considering predictive genetic testing for cancer predisposition for themselves and two counselling physicians in Switzer

Neurocognitive assessment in obsessive compulsive disorder patients: Adherence to behavioral decision models.

In economics, models of decision-making under risk are widely investigated. Since many empirical studies have shown patterns in choice behavior that classical models fail to predict, several descriptive theories have been developed. Due to an evident phenotypic heterogeneity, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients have shown a general deficit in decision making when compared to healthy control subjects (HCs). However, the direction for impairment in decision-making in OCD patients is still unclear. Hence, bridging decision-making models widely used in the economic literature with mental

The evolution and application of the medical evidence chain.

INTRODUCTION: Since the advent of evidence-based medicine, the decision-making process in disease diagnosis and treatment has exhibited fundamental principles that align closely with the core tenets of evidence chain theory in the legal field. Based on this, this paper aims to explore the underlying logic and practical value of transferring evidence chain theory from law to medicine, focusing on its significance in enhancing the scientific rigor and standardization of clinical decision-making. METHODS: Through systematic retrieval of existing literature in the fields of jurisprudence and medi

AI Chatbot Anthropomorphism and Consumer Decision-Making: A Dual-Pathway Calibration Model.

Anthropomorphism has shown inconsistent effects on human judgment, yet the underlying cognitive mechanisms remain underspecified. This research develops and tests a Dual-Pathway Calibration Model (DPCM) integrating dual-process theory, construal level theory, metacognition theory, and regulatory focus theory to explain how anthropomorphic cues influence cognitive processing in human-artificial intelligence (AI) interaction. Three experiments (N = 832) manipulated anthropomorphism and cue inconsistency, examining metacognitive calibration, regulatory focus, and perceived autonomy as boundary co

Quantum cognition and projection bias.

The innovative application of quantum mechanical concepts of probability to cognitive science has provided new, meaningful ways to more accurately model human decision making. Leveraging the dynamic geometric principles associated with the mathematics of quantum theory, we use the idea of probability interference to explain projection bias and its violations of the classical law of total probability and expected utility theory. In particular, Khrennikov's contextual probability model is successfully applied to the study by Read & van Leeuwen on hunger and projection bias. We conclude that prob

A non-ideal authenticity-based conceptualization of personal autonomy.

Respect for autonomy is a central moral principle in bioethics. The concept of autonomy can be construed in various ways. Under the non-ideal conceptualization proposed by Beauchamp and Childress, everyday choices of generally competent persons are autonomous to the extent that they are intentional and are made with understanding and without controlling influences. It is sometimes suggested that authenticity is important to personal autonomy, so that inauthenticity prevents otherwise autonomous persons from making autonomous decisions. Building from Beauchamp and Childress's theory, this artic

Toward a psychology of real-life decision-making.

Understanding human decision-making processes in everyday life is a central, yet rarely addressed, challenge in psychology. Either real-life complexity is reduced by isolating specific aspects of decision-making in highly constrained experimental settings, yielding insights into specific cognitive mechanisms under idealized conditions, or decision-making is studied in real-life contexts, using high-level descriptions of behavior that do not afford fine-grained, process-level insights. Bridging this gap poses a challenge of both measurement and inference. Recent advances in high-resolution trac

Parental decision-making after ultrasound diagnosis of a serious foetal abnormality.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to provide clinicians who are involved in the field of foetal medicine with a comprehensive overview of theories that are relevant for the parental decision-making process after ultrasound diagnosis of a serious foetal abnormality. METHODS: Since little data are available of parental decision-making after ultrasound diagnosis of foetal abnormality, we reviewed the literature on parental decision-making in genetic counselling of couples at increased genetic risk together with the literature on general decision-making theories. The findings were linked

Tragedy and Grenzsituationen in genetic prediction.

Philosophical anthropologies that emphasise the role of the emotions can be used to expand existing notions of moral agency and learning in situations of great moral complexity. In this article we tell the story of one patient facing the tough decision of whether to be tested for Huntington's disease or not. We then interpret her story from two different but compatible philosophical entry points: Aristotle's conception of Greek tragedy and Karl Jaspers' notion of Grenzsituationen (boundary situations). We continue by indicating some ways in which these two positions may be used for reflecting

Moving in between mammography: screening decisions of American Indian women in Vermont.

Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among American Indian women, with mammography screening rates below the national average for this population. A grounded theory study, conducted with Vermont American Indian women, explicated factors that influence mammography decision making. The authors examined mammography decision making across the breast cancer screening continuum: women with a history of consistent annual mammograms, women who were under users or nonusers of mammography, and women who were breast cancer survivors. The generated theory, Moving in Between Mammography, descri

Urgency Theory in the context of broader emotion theories: a conceptual review.

Negative and positive urgency are two closely related personality traits that reflect the tendency for an individual to engage in maladaptive risk-taking in response to extreme negative and positive emotions, respectively. However, other prominent emotion theories describe how emotions contribute to adaptive, rather than maladaptive, decision-making. This conceptual review considers how Urgency Theory can be integrated with these broader existing emotion theories. We proceed as follows: a) briefly define what is meant by emotions in science and summarize basic human neuroscience underlying emo

Pulpitis and root canal therapy: is a diagnostic radiograph of value?

Historical data and a decision-flow diagram were used to analyze the informational value to be obtained from diagnostic radiographs in cases of pulpitis. It is recommended that preoperative radiographs be relegated to the category of nonroutine procedures and that the eccentric length-measurement radiograph be used as point of reference.

Development of decision making: sequential versus integrative rules.

Decisions can be made by applying a variety of decision-making rules-sequential rules in which decisions are based on a sequential evaluation of choice dimensions and the integrative normative rule in which decisions are based on an integration of choice dimensions. In this study, we investigated the developmental trajectory of such decision-making rules. In the Gambling Machine Task, participants choose between options that differ in three dimensions: frequency of loss, amount of loss, and certain gain. The task was administered to 231 children and adolescents (age range=8-17 years). Latent g

ML-DSTnet: A Novel Hybrid Model for Breast Cancer Diagnosis Improvement Based on Image Processing Using Machine Learning and Dempster-Shafer Theory.

Medical intelligence detection systems have changed with the help of artificial intelligence and have also faced challenges. Breast cancer diagnosis and classification are part of this medical intelligence system. Early detection can lead to an increase in treatment options. On the other hand, uncertainty is a case that has always been with the decision-maker. The system's parameters cannot be accurately estimated, and the wrong decision is made. To solve this problem, we have proposed a method in this article that reduces the ignorance of the problem with the help of Dempster-Shafer theory so

A magnetic stimulation examination of orthographic neighborhood effects in visual word recognition.

The split-fovea theory proposes that visual word recognition is mediated by the splitting of the foveal image, with letters to the left of fixation projected to the right hemisphere (RH) and letters to the right of fixation projected to the left hemisphere (LH). We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the left and right occipital cortex during a lexical decision task to investigate the extent to which word recognition processes could be accounted for according to the split-fovea theory. Unilateral rTMS significantly impaired lexical decision latencies to centrally p

Intuitive symbolic magnitude judgments and decision making under risk in adults.

Performance on an intuitive symbolic number skills task-namely the number line estimation task-has previously been found to predict value function curvature in decision making under risk, using a cumulative prospect theory (CPT) model. However there has been no evidence of a similar relationship with the probability weighting function. This is surprising given that both number line estimation and probability weighting can be construed as involving proportion judgment, that is, involving estimating a number on a bounded scale based on its proportional relationship to the whole. In the present w

The somatic marker hypothesis: a critical evaluation.

The somatic marker hypothesis (SMH; [Damasio, A. R., Tranel, D., Damasio, H., 1991. Somatic markers and the guidance of behaviour: theory and preliminary testing. In Levin, H.S., Eisenberg, H.M., Benton, A.L. (Eds.), Frontal Lobe Function and Dysfunction. Oxford University Press, New York, pp. 217-229]) proposes that emotion-based biasing signals arising from the body are integrated in higher brain regions, in particular the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC), to regulate decision-making in situations of complexity. Evidence for the SMH is largely based on performance on the Iowa Gambling
