The WHO classification of lymphomas: cost-effective immunohistochemistry using a deductive reasoning "decision tree" approach: part II: the decision tree approach: diffuse patterns of proliferation in lymph nodes.

The 2008 World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues defines current standards of practice for the diagnosis and classification of malignant lymphomas and related entities. More than 50 different types of lymphomas are described. Faced with such a broad range of different lymphomas, some encountered only rarely, and a rapidly growing armamentarium of 80 or more pertinent immunohistochemical (IHC) "stains," the challenge to the pathologist is to use IHC in an efficient manner to arrive at an assured and timely diagnosis. This review uses deducti

Seeing the forest for the scenarios: Using decision trees to draw conclusions from large energy scenario sets.

Energy transition studies often present hundreds of scenarios, yielding large datasets that are challenging to interpret. Alternative approaches define a few qualitative storylines, which are more accessible but disconnected from model-based evidence. Here, we show that decision trees, a popular machine learning technique, bridge this disconnect by distilling numerous scenarios into a small set of interpretable storylines centered around policy-relevant levers. We demonstrate this approach across three global and European case studies: First, we translate 1000 integrated assessment model scena

Using interpretable decision trees to explore TB-HIV integration under data constraints: a proof-of-concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Strengthening tuberculosis (TB) and HIV service integration remains a major priority in resource-limited settings, where fragmented care contributes to delayed diagnosis, poor treatment continuity, and suboptimal patient outcomes. Evaluating implementation conditions associated with integrated care remains challenging because health system data are often simplified, inconsistently recorded, and insufficiently structured to capture the complexity of real-world service-delivery processes. This study aimed to demonstrate the application of an interpretable decision-tree framework to e

Diagnosis model for gastric submucosal tumor based on multiple decision trees comprising endoscopic and endoscopic ultrasonography features.

BACKGROUND: The clinical course and manifestations of subepithelial lesions (SEL) patients tend to vary from different pathological types, therefore the accurate diagnosis of SEL would undoubtedly be beneficial to the treatment and prognosis of SEL patients. Based on the decision tree method, we developed a novel classification model for SELs by combining endoscopy with endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from 469 patients hospitalized in the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University between January 2017 to November 2021 for endoscopic resection. Chi-square

Venlafaxine XR treatment for older patients with major depressive disorder: decision trees for when to change treatment.

BACKGROUND: Predictors of antidepressant response in older patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) need to be confirmed before they can guide treatment. OBJECTIVE: To create decision trees for early identification of older patients with MDD who are unlikely to respond to 12 weeks of antidepressant treatment, we analysed data from 454 older participants treated with venlafaxine XR (150-300 mg/day) for up to 12 weeks in the Incomplete Response in Late-Life Depression: Getting to Remission study. METHODS: We selected the earliest decision point when we could detect participants who had no

Preliminary Attempt to Predict Risk of Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis in Patients with Influenza: Decision Trees May Help?

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is typically considered a disease of immunocompromised patients, but, recently, many cases have been reported in patients without typical risk factors. The aim of our study is to develop a risk predictive model for IPA through machine learning techniques (decision trees) in patients with influenza. We conducted a retrospective observational study analyzing data regarding patients diagnosed with influenza hospitalized at the University Hospital "Umberto I" of Rome during the 2018-2019 season. We collected five IPA cases out of 77 influenza patients. Althou

The implementation of a decision-tree did not increase decision-making in patients with temporomandibular disorders in the public dental health service.

OBJECTIVE: Many patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) seem to go undetected within primary dental health care. Primarily we evaluated if the implemented intervention increased the clinical decision-making for TMD patients; secondarily we evaluated if other factors could be identified that predicted performed or recommended TMD treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This case-control study was carried out within the Public Dental Health service in Västerbotten County, Sweden. An intervention based on a decision-tree with three screening questions for TMD (3Q/TMD) was implemented during 201

Response frequencies in the conjoint recognition memory task as predictors of developmental dyslexia diagnosis: A decision-trees approach.

The presented study applies the methods of data mining and prediction models to the subject of memory functioning in developmental dyslexia. This article sets forth the results of an analysis of the decision tree algorithm for the classification of dyslexia/non-dyslexia, based on frequency data from the modified simplified conjoint recognition experiment-a paradigm based on the fuzzy-trace theory used to investigate verbatim and gist memory. This decision tree model was created with the use of the C&RT algorithm, which makes a prediction of the classification with the use of four predictors: t

Prediction of radiographic progression pattern in patients with ankylosing spondylitis using group-based trajectory modeling and decision trees.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify trajectories of radiographic progression of the spine over time and use them, along with associated clinical factors, to develop a prediction model for patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: Data from the medical records of patients diagnosed with AS in a single center were extracted between 2001 and 2018. Modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spinal Scores (mSASSS) were estimated from cervical and lumbar radiographs. Group-based trajectory modeling classified patients into trajectory subgroups using longitudinal mSASSS data. In multivariat

Early Recognition of the Preference for Exclusive Breastfeeding in Current China: A Prediction Model based on Decision Trees.

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is affected by multiple risk factors. Therefore, it is difficult for clinical professionals to identify women who will not practice EBF well and provide subsequent medical suggestions and treatments. This study aimed to apply a decision tree (DT) model to predict EBF at two months postpartum. The socio-demographic, clinical and breastfeeding parameters of 1,141 breastfeeding women from Nanjing were evaluated. Decision tree modelling was used to analyse and screen EBF factors and establish a risk assessment model of EBF. The Chinese version of the Breastfeeding Sel

Conditional pathways to loneliness in older adults with vision impairment: a decision-tree analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of vision impairment continues to increase globally due to population growth and aging. Among older adults with vision impairment, loneliness is common. Prior studies assessing loneliness risk have relied on regression-based approaches, which may not capture complex, heterogeneous conditional pathways. We apply a theoretically guided machine learning approach to examine loneliness risk among older adults with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using baseline data from 210 adults with AMD (Agemean = 80.1 years) enrolle

Analysis of the CTS-6 Questionnaire and Development of a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Decision Tree.

PURPOSE: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common compressive neuropathy with no gold standard for diagnosis. The CTS-6 questionnaire is a previously validated tool used to determine the likelihood that a patient has CTS; however, numbness and tingling in the median nerve distribution is not a required symptom for a positive test result. The purpose of this study was to re-evaluate the components of the CTS-6 questionnaire to determine if a more succinct carpal tunnel screening tool could be developed. METHODS: A database of 295 upper extremities who had previously undergone CTS-6 testing wer

Canine oral lesions: a decision-tree approach to ulcers, leukoplakia, and pigmented lesions.

Lesions in the oral cavity of dogs can be erythematous, leukoplakic, or pigmented in coloration. The diagnosis of oral erosions, ulcers, and white lesions in contrast to pigmented lesions in veterinary practice can be challenging. The most benign-looking oral ulcers can be associated with local malignant or systemic disease. Many factors are important in the evaluation and correct diagnosis of oral lesions, including medical and drug history, description of the lesion, number of lesions, depth of the lesion, biopsy technique, and correct histologic interpretation. The goal of this paper is to

Decision tree model based prediction of the efficacy of acupuncture in methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Patients with MMT often face difficulties such as sleep disturbance, headaches, and difficulty in complete abstinence from drugs. Research has shown that acupuncture can mitigate side effects while attenuating methadone dependence. It also has a synergistic and attenuated effect on methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Exploring the predictors of the efficacy of acupuncture intervention in MMT might help clinicians and patients promote acupuncture-assisted participation in MMT, and improve clinical treatment strategies for MMT. OBJECTIVE: To describe the effect of potential predi
