Disruption or partitioning? Deep eutectic solvent biphasic systems for integrated seaweed biorefineries.

In this study, a DES-based biphasic system (FABU) was evaluated for the multiproduct extraction of compounds from Saccharina latissima. The system combined a hydrophobic fatty-acid phase (dodecanoic acid-octanoic acid, FA) for fucoxanthin extraction with a hydrophilic betaine-urea-phase (BU) for alginate recovery, together with citric acid pretreatment for fucoidan and mannitol recovery. While fucoxanthin partitioning into the FA phase was limited (41-58 µg g- 1), a substantially higher fucoxanthin concentration (563 ± 8 µg g- 1) was recovered during the subsequent alkaline extraction step. Ethaline deep eutectic solvent under nanoconfinement: Unveiling structural and dynamical changes.

Hybrid nanomaterials incorporating deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in porous hosts or at solid interfaces are gaining increasing attention for their potential interest across a wide range of applications. Under these conditions, the performances of DESs may be influenced by interfacial effects and spatial restrictions. In this study, we examined the effects of nanoconfinement on both the structure and molecular dynamics of the prototypical DES ethaline (a mixture of choline chloride and ethylene glycol) when confined within the cylindrical mesopores of SBA-15 (Dp ≈ 8.1 nm) and MCM-41 (Dp ≈ 3.5 n

Role of deep eutectic solvents for the extraction of polysaccharides from seaweed for food applications.

The accelerating demand for green bioprocessing has positioned seaweed polysaccharides as expensive bioresources owing to their conformational diversity and varied bioactivities. Their relevance in functional foods and pharmaceuticals further emphasises the need for efficient and sustainable extraction strategies. The majority of existing extraction techniques frequently negotiate polysaccharide integrity, purity, and yield. In response, deep eutectic solvents (DES) have arisen as promising sustainable solvents, advancing tunable physicochemical characteristics and improved selectivity on poly

Effects and mechanisms of natural deep eutectic solvents on the Decrystallization and quality of multifloral honey.

This study proposes natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) to address the limitations of conventional honey decrystallization methods. Under mild conditions (30 °C), the decrystallization rate exceeded 70%. With a higher dosage, this rate approached approximately 90% (P < 0.05). NMR, IR, and DSC analyses revealed a stable hydrogen-bond network in NADESs. The spectra exhibited only shifts in peak intensity and position, with no new compounds detected. Cytotoxicity tests further demonstrated that these solvents are biocompatible. In multifloral honey, the addition of NADESs lowered the 5-hydrox

Is the intestinal mucous layer a natural deep eutectic solvent-based digestion matrix?

In plants, a third solubilization matrix (besides water and lipids) has been proposed, composed of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs). Such matrices allow for the solubilization of many biologically important molecules, such as starch, which are insoluble in water or lipids. NADES matrices also support enzyme activity, such as amylase, at higher rates than water or lipid-based matrices. We contemplated if a NADES environment could play a role in small intestinal starch digestion. The intestinal mucous layer (encompassing both the glycocalyx and the secreted mucous layer) has a chemical co

Activity-Coefficient-Guided Heuristics for Deep Eutectic Solvent Fractionation of Kraft Lignin.

The valorization of technical lignin requires fractionation strategies that deliver chemically and thermally distinct lignin streams with predictable structure-property relationships while minimizing hazardous solvent use. Here, we propose a preliminary, exploratory thermodynamic design framework for lignin fractionation based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs), using activity coefficients as quantitative descriptors of solvent-solute interactions. Six chloride-based DESs were synthesized and characterized through freezing-point depression, FTIR spectroscopy, and Schröder-Le Chatelier analysis.

A Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Nanodelivery System for Enhanced Rice Blast Treatment.

The development of nanopesticides with minimized carriers (NMCs) through prodrug design and molecular self-assembly represents a transformative strategy for enhancing pesticide utilization efficiency and addressing global food security challenges. As a proof of concept, we developed A12@DES, a water-based nanodelivery system that combines a target-specific pesticide with a deep eutectic solvent (DES). The system utilizes a laccase inhibitor (A12, structurally optimized from lead compound PMDD-5Y) to self-assemble into monodisperse nanospheres (∼160 nm diameter) with an alkaline phosphatase (AL

A TEMPO supported-deep eutectic solvent as a novel and capable catalyst for alcohol oxidations.

The oxidation reactions of organic functional groups are one of the important processes in synthesis and chemical industries and have wide applications. Therefore, it is very important to use suitable, cheap, biocompatible, non-toxic catalysts as well as oxidants that do not produce by-products or non-toxic by-products. In the upcoming project, we are trying to use deep eutectic solvents (DESs) containing tempo unit as an active oxidizing catalyst in alcohol oxidation. Numerous catalytic systems have been developed for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols, with TEMPO-based systems utilizing metal

Deep Eutectic Solvents as Agents for Improving the Solubility of Edaravone: Experimental and Theoretical Considerations.

In this study, both practical and theoretical aspects of the solubility of edaravone (EDA) in Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) were considered. The solubility of edaravone in some media, including water, can be limited, which creates the need for new efficient and environmentally safe solvents. The solubility of EDA was measured spectrophotometrically and the complex intermolecular interactions within the systems were studied with the COSMO-RS framework. Of the four studied DES systems, three outperformed the most efficient classical organic solvent, namely dichloromethane, with the DES comprisin

Binding of tetrabutylammonium bromide based deep eutectic solvent to DNA by spectroscopic analysis.

The binding characteristics of DNA in deep eutectic solvents (DESs), particularly the binding energy and interaction mechanism, are not widely known. In this study, the binding of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) based DES of different hydrogen bond donors (HBD), including ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol (Gly), 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) and 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PD), to calf thymus DNA was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that the shorter the alkyl chain length (2 carbons) and higher EG ratios of TBABr:EG (1:5) increased the binding constant (Kb) between DES and DNA up

Nonlinear Quantum Effects Drive Grotthuss Proton Conduction in Structured Electrolytes Based on Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Structured electrolytes based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) face electrochemical limitations of vehicular diffusion due to high viscosities often leading to low conductivities. Here, we demonstrate that the inverse relationship between viscosity and conductivity in DESs can be circumvented by leveraging their hydrogen bonding networks for Grotthuss proton transport. Using DESs comprising imidazole and levulinic acid, we show that the existence of extended hydrogen-bonded chains coupled with rapid reorientation of protonated imidazoles result in enhanced Grotthuss proton diffusion in these c

Deep eutectic solvents as a versatile platform for wood modification: Lignocellulosic regulation and functional applications.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as a highly versatile platform for wood modification and biomass processing due to their compositional tunability, mild reaction conditions and capacity for selective regulation of lignocellulosic components, thereby enabling the subsequent structural engineering and functionalization of wood. Compared to thermal treatment, chemical modification and impregnation techniques, DES modification can selectively remove lignin and hemicellulose, rearrange cellulose microstructures and reconstruct the cell-wall pore architecture while largely preserving the h

Lewis acid-diol deep eutectic solvents for structurally retained lignin fractionation and corn stover saccharification.

Lewis acid-diol-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were constructed for technical lignin dissolution and corn stover (CS) fractionation. The DESs showed high dissolution capacities toward kraft lignin, enzymatic hydrolysis lignin and alkaline lignin with maximum solubilities of 58.4 wt%, 78.8 wt% and 45.5 wt%, respectively. Structure analysis revealed that lignins with abundant β-aryl ether bonds, hydroxyl groups and syringyl type aromatic units were more favorable for dissolution. Among the screened systems, ZnCl2-1,5-pentanediol significantly enhanced corn stover fractionation under mild co

Efficient absorption of SO2 with low-partial pressures by environmentally benign functional deep eutectic solvents.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitted from the burning of fossil fuels is one of the main air contaminants. In this work, we found that environmentally benign solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) could be designed with a function to absorb low-partial pressure SO2 from simulated flue gas. Two kinds of biodegradable functional DESs based on betaine (Bet) and l-carnitine (L-car) as hydrogen bond accepters (HBA) and ethylene glycol (EG) as a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) were prepared with mole ratios of HBA to HBD from 1:3 to 1:5, and they were investigated to absorb SO2 with different partial pressures a
