Degloving injury of the mandibular mucosa following an extreme sport accident: a case report.

The increasing popularity of high-risk extreme sports such as acrobatic biking, mountain biking, skateboarding, or rollerblading is becoming a notable cause of maxillofacial injuries. Dentists should, therefore, be familiar with the presentation and management of uncommon maxillofacial injuries as a result of these extreme sports. The purpose of this article was to detail a case report of a 7-year-old male with a degloving injury of the mandibular mucosa following an extreme sport accident and to present a description of the patient's multidisciplinary management and follow-up.

Maggot therapy for wound debridement in a traumatic foot-degloving injury: a case report.

A 43-year-old man was treated for a traumatic degloving injury to his foot with a transmetatarsal amputation and wound care because of the extensive soft tissue loss. After biweekly sharp debridements in the office for 4 weeks, very minimal skin ingrowth was noted. Maggot therapy was then implemented for a 48-hour treatment and a second treatment for 72 hours to help reduce excessive fibrosis and to painlessly debride the tissues to expose the granular base. Daily dressing changes for the next 6 weeks successfully allowed complete wound closure without any additional interventions. During the

Arterialization of plantar venous system via vein graft: A novel technique for reconstruction of heel pad degloving injuries.

BACKGROUND: Patients with heel pad degloving injury frequently develop ischemic necrosis of the area, necessitating soft-tissue reconstruction surgery. We have developed a technique for arterialization of the plantar venous system via vein graft (APV) as the primary revascularization treatment. The objective of this study was to clarify both the utility of APV for the preservation of degloved heel pads and the impact of this preservation on clinical outcomes. METHODS: Ten consecutive cases of degloving injury with devascularized heel pad were treated at a single trauma center from 2008 to 201

Diagnosis and management of closed internal degloving injuries associated with pelvic and acetabular fractures: the Morel-Lavallée lesion.

Closed internal degloving is a significant soft-tissue injury associated with a pelvic trauma in which the subcutaneous tissue is torn away from the underlying fascia, creating a cavity filled with hematoma and liquefied fat. It commonly occurs over the greater trochanter but may also occur in the flank and lumbodorsal region. When this closed internal degloving occurs over the greater trochanter, it is known as a Morel-Lavallée lesion. We reviewed 24 patients who sustained a closed internal degloving injury. Cultures from the closed internal degloving injury were positive in 46% (11 of 24 cas

A new classification to aid the selection of revascularization techniques in major degloving injuries of the upper limb.

Difficulties in management of major degloving injuries of the upper limb are compounded by their relative rarity and a lack of clarity in decision-making regarding surgical treatment strategies. Management options include salvaging the degloved segment through revascularization techniques such as direct arterial anastamosis or arterio-venous (AV) shunting, and reconstructing the unsalvageable degloving injury with microsurgical or non-microsurgical techniques. This article focuses on the use of revascularization techniques as a means to salvaging a major degloved segment. We propose a new clas

Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated in a degloving baker's machine injury, a contamination or infection - a case report.

Deep tissue and bloodstream yeast infections are associated with poor outcomes due to rapid progression, antifungal resistance, and immune evasion. Differentiating between wound contamination and true fungal infection remains a clinical challenge, with limited guidance on the use of prophylactic antifungal therapy in this setting. This article presents a rare case of an immunocompetent patient who sustained a degloving hand injury and radius fracture from a bread kneading machine, with subsequent deep tissue cultures growing Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The case underscores the potential risk of

Traumatic Hemifacial Avulsion and Degloving Injury With Left Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fracture: A Case Report.

Managing gross maxillofacial injuries poses significant challenges due to potential complications such as airway obstruction, cervical spine injuries, and damage to cranial structures. The resultant deformities from these injuries can have enduring psychological effects, which, if left unaddressed, can be devastating. This report outlines an approach for a patient with a history of a bull gore injury wherein a 49-year-old male presented to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, reporting an alleged animal attack. The patient had experienced avulsion of the left eye and degloving inj

Replantation of a circumferentially degloved thumb in an occupational crush injury - A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Degloving injuries of the fingers and especially the thumb are highly demanding problems in hand surgery and replantation often is not successful because of severe soft tissue contusion. Only few cases of successfull replantation for hand degloving injuries in thumbs are reported in literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a young right hand dominant worker experiencing an occupational accident with a circumferential avulsion of his right thumbs' soft tissue at the level of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint with complete skeletization of his thumb and a deep lacerat

The results of the treatment of hand - Outcomes of the treatment of hand degloving injuries with greater omentum flaps.

Degloving injury consists in tearing out the soft-tissue integument from skeleton of the hand, with accompanied nerves and vessels. The whole hand degloving has bad reputation and one of worst prognosis, even worse than total hand amputation. The range of possible salvage procedures in these cases is limited and their outcomes are unsatisfactory. One of the suitable methods is wrapping the skinned hand with pedicled or free greater omentum flap, retrieved from the abdominal cavity. The article reports outcomes of the treatment of 5 patients at a mean of 8 years after total degloving of their h

Degloving injuries of trunk and limbs: comparison of outcomes of early versus delayed assessment by the plastic surgery team.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze cases of degloving of the trunk and limbs, comparing outcomes of early versus delayed assessment by the plastic surgery team. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective analysis of medical charts. Patients comprised two groups: Group I - early assessment, performed within 12 hours post trauma; and Group II - delayed assessment, performed more than 12 hours post trauma. We defined primary grafting as the use of skin from the traumatized skin flap. We excluded cases involving hands, feet or genitalia. RESULTS: there were 47 patients treated with degloving injuries between 2002

Reconstruction of Total Hand Degloving Injury with Combined Free and Pedicled Flaps and Ilizarov Minifixator.

Total hand degloving injuries present a significant challenge in treatment, with no consensus yet on the optimal choice of flap for coverage. Functional reconstruction necessitates careful consideration of syndactyly release, particularly after flap coverage. A 64-year-old woman sustained a total hand degloving injury and underwent extensive reconstructive surgery. Initially, a free superficial circumflex iliac perforator flap was applied to the thumb, whereas pedicled groin and superficial inferior epigastric artery flaps were used for the remaining fingers. However, partial necrosis at the e

Case report: successful use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for a complete scalp degloving injury.

We report a case of a complete scalp degloving injury in a 43-year-old previously healthy, tobacco-using female whose hair was caught in a tractor power take-off causing an instantaneous total scalping injury. Microsurgical replantation was started 4 hours after injury with the surgical procedure lasting 4 hours. Only the superficial temporal arteries were reanastomosed with no venous anastomosis possible. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment at 2.5 atmospheres absolute (ATA) for 90 minutes was administered immediately after surgery due to duskiness of the flap. Further HBO2 treatments were admi

Management of Severe Penile and Scrotal Degloving Injury Following Dog Bite in an Infant: A Case Report.

Dog bites are a common cause of pediatric trauma, although genital involvement is rare and presents significant reconstructive challenges. We report a 7-month-old male infant with severe penile and scrotal degloving injury and distal urethral involvement following a domestic dog bite. Following stabilization, the patient underwent irrigation, debridement, urethral catheterization, and staged reconstruction including delayed scrotal closure and penile reconstruction with a full-thickness skin graft. Ceftriaxone antibiotics and rabies post-exposure prophylaxis were administered. Recovery was une

Degloving lower leg injury - the importance of additional treatment: negative pressure and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Degloving injury poses a severe therapeutic challenge concerning both trauma and plastic surgery. The injury involves separation of skin and subcutaneous tissue from fascia and muscles. Treatment is often long-lasting and brings unsatisfying results due to the extent of damage, risk of infection and massive blood loss. In this article, we present the management and therapeutic outcomes of a patient admitted due to the degloving injury of the lower extremity caused by workplace accident. We described the complexity of treatment including surgical intervention as well as additional treatment, wh

Percutaneous pedicle screw fixation for an unstable thoracic spine fracture after a traumatic degloving injury.

Unstable spinal fractures require urgent surgical intervention to relieve compression of the spinal cord, correct spinal deformity, stabilise the spine and prevent further neurological injury. We report the case of a young man with a thoracic chance fracture in the setting of a devastating degloving injury, whose fracture was stabilised using minimally invasive, percutaneous pedicle screw fixation. We discuss the advantages of using a minimally invasive technique for spinal fixation and its role in the treatment of complicated, multisystem trauma patients.

Treatment of Foot Degloving Injury With Aid of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy and Dermal Regeneration Template.

Degloving injury of the foot continues to be a challenging condition to treat. Despite current advancements in reconstructive options, most of these injuries can result in amputations, causing physical and emotional impairment. Few reports have been published on the management of these complex traumatic injuries. Typical reconstruction options have included skin grafting and reattachment of the avulsed skin. Many treating physicians have encountered challenging issues in predicting tissue viability, knowing the extent of the injury, and making a logical decision for limb salvage procedures. Th
