Seven deadly sins in artificial intelligence for digital medicine.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in clinical environments, raising questions of trust, fairness, empathy, and governance. The ethical terrain surrounding AI in medicine remains unstable despite its rapid adoption. We introduce the "Seven Deadly Sins of AI in Medicine", a conceptual framework of recurring systemic failure modes: (i) Blind Trust, (ii) Overregulation, (iii) Dehumanization, (iv) Misaligned Optimization, (v) Overinforming and False Forecasting, (vi) Misapplied Statistics, and (vii) Self-Referential Evaluation. The framework was developed through systematic synt

Institutional suicide as anomie: decedents speak out for work-related suicides through a Durkheimian exploration of suicide notes in a context without institutional responsibilization for suicide prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Drawing on Durkheim's historical theorization of suicide, we extend his concept of anomic suicide, which is suicide due to a lack of social regulation, to introduce the concept of institutional suicide. We define institutional suicide as suicide due to the absence or decline of institutional policies, practices, and discourses for prevention. In this study, we explore the mechanisms for institutional suicides based on suicide notes Turkey, in a context without institutional responsibilization for prevention. Turkey provides a significant context for studying institutional suicide

Social Identity and Power: Older Adults as "Care Recipients" in Media Content on Family Care.

In the context of normalized forms of elder abuse and neglect in Canada, it is important to examine how constructions of family caregivers in the public sphere (re)produce potentially harmful assumptions. In this paper, we examine mainstream media construction of the "caregiver" identity in advocacy-related coverage over a 6-year time period (2016-2021). Relying on abductive formal analysis, we explore how care for older adults is presented as largely burdensome and linked to what are labeled the "complex care needs" of a growing aging population that is erroneously presented as largely incapa

Racism and mental health and the role of mental health professionals.

The concept of "race" and consequently of racism is not a recent phenomenon, although it had profound effects on the lives of populations over the last several hundred years. Using slaves and indentured labor from racial groups designated to be "the others," who was seen as inferior and thus did not deserve privileges, and who were often deprived of the right to life and basic needs as well as freedoms. Thus, creation of "the other" on the basis of physical characteristics and dehumanizing them became more prominent. Racism is significantly related to poor health, including mental health. The

Promoting High-Quality, Accessible Cancer Care for People With Disabilities.

People with disabilities (PWD) face numerous challenges throughout the continuum of cancer care. Many of these are due to personal and structural biases that have historically made it more difficult for PWD to access oncologic care and which can be dehumanizing. We provide a narrative review of these challenges, starting with a review of disability statistics and methodologic considerations when reviewing the epidemiology of disability. We then discuss historic legal frameworks designed to support PWD, and barriers to oncology care faced by PWD, organized around the following primary topics: (

From Puzzle to Progress: How Engaging With Neurodiversity Can Improve Cognitive Science.

In cognitive science, there is a tacit norm that phenomena such as cultural variation or synaesthesia are worthy examples of cognitive diversity that contribute to a better understanding of cognition, but that other forms of cognitive diversity (e.g., autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder/ADHD, and dyslexia) are primarily interesting only as examples of deficit, dysfunction, or impairment. This status quo is dehumanizing and holds back much-needed research. In contrast, the neurodiversity paradigm argues that such experiences are not necessarily deficits but rather are natural refle

The Transformation to Health for All in Correctional Care: Shifting Mindset to End Collusion.

Bottom Line Up Front: Prison, for most incarcerated persons, can be a harsh and oftentimes dehumanizing environment. The U.S. criminal justice system has become more punitive than rehabilitative since the 1970s. In a reversal of this trend, newly passed legislation has charged prisons with preparing incarcerated persons for reentry into society, reducing recidivism, and providing rehabilitation programs targeting individual needs and risk. At the same time, prison staff delivering these services are faced with the challenge of burn-out, fatigue, depression, PTSD, suicide, and substance abuse a

Artificial and emotional intelligence: two key forces for teachers' professional development in an era of uncertainty.

The expansion of artificial intelligence in education is moving faster than institutions' capacity to protect teacher wellbeing. Current debates often oscillate between technocentric optimism, which equates success with personalisation and scale, and pre-emptive rejection driven by fears of dehumanization. This conceptual and critical synthesis proposes a different evaluative criterion: AI may support teachers' socio-emotional professional development only when it functions as relational infrastructure rather than as a symbolic substitute for human accompaniment. The manuscript introduces rela

Tuberculosis, vulnerabilities, and HIV in homeless persons: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Analyze, systematize, and compile social, individual, and programmatic vulnerability factors associated with tuberculosis and HIV in homeless persons. METHODS: This is a systematic literature review assessing quantitative studies, published between 2014 and 2020, on the prevalence of tuberculosis in homeless persons. Our review grouped studies according to vulnerabilities, followed the PRISMA recommendation guide, and used the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool for bias analysis. RESULTS: Of the 372 publications found, 16 were selected according to our eligibility cri

Proximity with limited humanity: How hosting a tent city impacted college students' perceptions of individuals experiencing homelessness.

The current manuscript assessed the impact of a community intervention-hosting a government-sanctioned homeless encampment-on perceptions of individuals experiencing homelessness. College students' perceptions of individuals experiencing homelessness were collected before and after a tent city resided on campus. Perceptions were assessed utilizing a measure of dehumanization that probed the presumed importance of physiological and psychological needs. Data about contact with individuals experiencing homelessness were also collected. Hosting a tent city did not improve community-wide perception

Physiotherapy methods of relieving pain.

Management of pain in the person with arthritis requires interdisciplinary team work with the patient being the final manager. It is important that any health care provider perceive the patient as a person who happens to have arthritis--not as 'an "arthritic".' Defining a person by one's disease process is dehumanizing. The patient has the same aspirations as anyone who is ablebodied--to be free from disease. While the patient may know that a cure is not imminent, there is still the hope for one. Therefore, as the patient comes for physiotherapy, there may be a hidden wish that the moist packs

Medical AI and Human Dignity: A Catholic Normative Ethical Framework in Light of Magnifica Humanitas.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping healthcare through advances in prediction and personalization, yet these developments also raise questions that are not merely technical but also are moral and religious. This article offers a normative framework for Catholic engagement with medical AI in light of Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas (2026). Drawing on the encyclical's critique of the "Babel Syndrome," we argue that medical AI is dehumanizing in two principal ways: first, through an idolatry of optimization that reduces the person to a data source; and second, through an illusion of a

Misogyny incubators: how gaming helps channel everyday sexism into violent extremism.

We face a pervasive and proliferating climate of online misogyny, along with an ever-expanding digital ecosystem that makes it faster and easier to express and share hateful content and harass individuals. In this review article, I explore one explanation for how online misogyny has become so ubiquitous and mainstream, looking at how online and digital gaming communities incubate, channel, and champion hostile sexist and misogynist attitudes, dehumanizing slurs, and other hateful content directed toward women and gender non-conforming people. I situate this mainstreaming of online misogyny wit

The Language of Pain in the Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Metaphors as a Key to Understanding the Experience of Pain and as a Rehabilitation Tool.

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a heterogeneous group of Heritable Connective Tissue Disorders characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility. Among the different types, the hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is the most frequent and includes generalized joint hypermobility as the major diagnostic criterion. Joint hypermobility in hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is often associated with pain that does not always allow the use of effective pain-reducing treatments. Patients with hEDS constantly describe their pain in detail. Eighty-nine patients with hEDS dia

Unseen, Ungrieved: Idiocy and the Architecture of Exclusion in Eugenic Institutions.

This essay reexamines institutional segregation during the eugenics era by centering the experiences of individuals labeled "low-grade" or "unimprovable," who have been largely excluded from both public life and historical memory. While scholarship on eugenics has emphasized sterilization, immigration restriction, and the politics of heredity, it has paid comparatively little attention to how significant intellectual disability was discursively and materially constructed within custodial institutions governed by medical and administrative authority. The essay argues that the figure of the "idi
