[Uncommon non-fermenting Gram-negative rods as pathogens of lower respiratory tract infection].

INTRODUCTION: Glucose non-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria are ubiquitous environmental organisms. Most of them are identified as opportunistic, nosocomial pathogens in patients. Uncommon species are identified accurately, mainly due to the introduction of matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in clinical microbiology practice. Most of these uncommon non-fermenting rods are isolated from lower respiratory tract samples. Their significance in lower respiratory tract infections, such as rules of their testing are not clarified yet. AIM: The

Urinary microbiome profiling as a non-invasive tool for identifying biomarkers in systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis.

INTRODUCTION: Bacteriome alterations have been implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the relationship between SLE and the urinary microbiome remains underexplored. This study aimed to characterize the urinary microbiome of SLE patients using 16S rRNA sequencing and to investigate its correlations with clinical parameters through integrative analyses. METHODS: Urine sediment samples were collected from individuals with SLE and lupus nephritis (LN) (n = 20), SLE without LN (n = 22), and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 23). DNA was extracted and subjected to

Nasopharyngeal Dysbiosis Precedes the Development of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections in Young Infants, a Longitudinal Infant Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Infants suffering from lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) have distinct nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiome profiles that correlate with severity of disease. Whether these profiles precede the infection or are a consequence of it, is unknown. In order to answer this question, longitudinal studies are needed. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of NP samples collected in a longitudinal birth cohort study of Zambian mother-infant pairs. Samples were collected every two weeks from 1-week through 14-weeks of age. Ten of the infants in the cohort who developed LRTI were m

Fecal microbiota transplantation in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome: a single-center prospective study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a potential treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but its efficacy in Japanese IBS patients is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy, side effects, and microbiome changes following FMT in Japanese IBS patients. METHODS: Seventeen Japanese patients with refractory IBS received FMT (4 donors) under colonoscopy. Responders were defined by an improvement in the IBS severity index (IBS-SI) of 50 points or more after 12 weeks. We evaluated the IBS-SI and Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and compared the diversity and microbio

Distribution of microbiota in cervical preneoplasia of racially disparate populations.

BACKGROUNDS: Microbiome dysbiosis is an important contributing factor in tumor development and thus may be a risk predictor for human malignancies. In the United States, women with Hispanic/Latina (HIS) and African American (AA) background have a higher incidence of cervical cancer and poorer outcomes than Caucasian American (CA) women. METHODS: Here, we assessed the distribution pattern of microbiota in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) lesions obtained from HIS (n = 12), AA (n = 12), and CA (n = 12) women, who were screened for CC risk assessment. We employed a 16S rRNA gene sequenci

[Distribution of potential pathogenic bacteria in the Jiulong River Watershed].

Recently, the human activities including economic growth and urbanization posed serious environmental health risks to the Jiulong River Watershed (JRW). In order to gain a full understanding of the distribution of potential pathogenic bacteria (PPB) in this area, we used 16S rRNA amplicon pyrosequencing technology to investigate planktonic and benthic bacterial community in two main tributaries (North River, NR, and West River, WR) of the Jiulong River (JR). At the genus level, a total of 68 genera of PPB were identified in JR, which accounted for 6. 1% of total gene sequences. Clostridium, My

Environmental surveillance of bacteria in a new intensive care unit using plate sweeps.

The hospital environment plays a critical role in the transmission of infectious diseases. Surveillance methods often rely on selective enrichment or deep metagenomic sequencing, which both have significant drawbacks in terms of community resolution and cost. Plate sweeps provide a practical moderate approach to cultivate a wide range of bacteria, capturing more diversity than a single colony pick without high sequencing costs. Here, we use this approach to characterize a newly built hospital intensive care unit (ICU) in Queensland, Australia. Between November 2023 and February 2024, we sample

Assessing the hepatotoxicity of PFOA, PFOS, and 6:2 Cl-PFESA in black-spotted frogs (Rana nigromaculata) and elucidating potential association with gut microbiota.

Pollution caused by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has become a major global concern. The association between PFAS-induced hepatotoxicity and gut microbiota in amphibians, particularly at environmentally relevant concentrations, remains elusive. Herein we exposed male black-spotted frogs (Rana nigromaculata) to 1 and 10 μg/L waterborne perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) for 21 days; subsequently, liver histopathological, oxidative stress, molecular docking, gene/protein expression,

Bacterial diversity in gut compartments of Tomicus brevipilosus: from shoot-boring preconditioning of Pinus yunnanensis to trunk-boring reproduction.

BACKGROUND: Gut bacteria are critically important to bark beetles, especially under environmental fluctuations. Tomicus brevipilosus undergoes a niche shift from shoot-boring (which weakens Pinus yunnanensis) to trunk-boring for reproduction. The relationship between this transition and the gut microbiota remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Using 16S rRNA sequencing, we characterized gut bacterial communities across adult feeding phase, sexes, and intestinal compartments. RESULTS: The alimentary canal was composed of six morphologically distinguishable regions, to which Malpighian tubules wer

Analysis of 16S rRNA Gene Sequence of Nasopharyngeal Exudate Reveals Changes in Key Microbial Communities Associated with Aging.

Functional or compositional perturbations of the microbiome can occur at different sites, of the body and this dysbiosis has been linked to various diseases. Changes in the nasopharyngeal microbiome are associated to patient's susceptibility to multiple viral infections, supporting the idea that the nasopharynx may be playing an important role in health and disease. Most studies on the nasopharyngeal microbiome have focused on a specific period in the lifespan, such as infancy or the old age, or have other limitations such as low sample size. Therefore, detailed studies analyzing the age- and

Evaluating the effect of silver nanoparticles on bacteriophage lytic infection cycle-a mechanistic understanding.

Bacteriophages and engineered nano-material (AgNPS) interactions is a relatively unexplored area of research. To answer the fundamental question whether bacteriophage lytic growth cycle is affected by the presence of AgNPs, laboratory experiments were performed with phages of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Delftia tsuruhatensis, Salmonella typhimurium, and Shigella flexneri using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with coating materials. One-step growth curves of bacteriophages indicated that the presence of these nanoparticles, and the associated ions of silver, produced pronounced effects on the lytic inf

Ferrihydrite-organo composites are a suitable analog for predicting Cd(II)-As(V) coexistence behaviors at the soil solid-liquid interfaces.

Organomineral assemblages are building units of soil micro-aggregates and exert their essential roles in immobilizing toxic elements. Currently, our knowledge of the adsorption and partitioning behaviors of coexisting Cd-As onto organomineral composites is limited. Herein, we carefully studied Cd-As cosorption onto ferrihydrite organomineral composites made with either living or non-living organics, i.e., bacteria (Delftia sp.) or humic acid (HA), using batch adsorption and various spectroscopies. Batch results show that As(V) only enhances Cd(II) sorption on pure Fh at pH < 6 but cannot promo

Iron nutrition and host microbiota regulation in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.): The health risk of excess surpasses that of deficiency.

This research studied the effects of iron (Fe) on physiology and microbiota (intestine and surrounding water) of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.). Three purified diets were designed: Fe0, Fe350, and Fe1750, with 0, 350, and 1750 mg/kg Fe supplementation from FeSO4, respectively. A total of 225 fish (initial body weight 8.19 ± 0.08 g) at 84 d of age were evenly distributed into nine tanks (25 fish per tank, 150 L seawater) for a 60-d feeding trial. The results showed that Fe deficiency (Fe0) or excess (Fe1750) had no obvious effects on growth performance (P > 0.05), but significantly affected o
