Long-term effects of kwashiorkor on the electroencephalogram.

The long-term effects of kwashiorkor on the electroencephalogram were assessed by means of computer analysis techniques. The experimental group, consisting of 30 black children, 6 to 12 years old, hospitalized for the treatment of kwashiorkor during the first 27 months of life, was age-matched with three control groups. These were a group of siblings and of yardmates, neither of whom had been exposed to acute infantile malnutrition, and a very high socioeconomic group of white children. The results revealed significantly less alpha activity and more slow-wave activity in the electroencephalogr

Cerebral cortical isolation in infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy.

Three patients with infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD, Seitelberger's disease) studied between ages 2 and 5 years, with the characteristic electroencephalographic pattern of high-voltage, fast (16-24 c/sec) rhythms and absence of reactivity on eye-opening or closure (Radermecker and Dumon-Radermecker 1972), also showed no changes in response to intermittent photic stimulation and absence of evoked potentials to flashes, clicks or median nerve stimuli. Although some theta rhythms and delta activity appeared during drowsiness and sleep, the fast rhythms persisted as the dominant feature. The

Using EEG and MEG to characterize extreme delta brush in a patient with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Extreme delta brush (EDB) is considered a potential marker for anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis. The brain regions involved in EDB are unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old woman with anti-NMDAR encephalitis who was experiencing psychosis was admitted. Electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) were used to analyze EDB in the patient. EDB on EEG could be disturbed by opening and closing the eyes, by occipital alpha rhythms and by sleep-wake cycles. The MEG results showed beta activity originating from bilateral superior parietal l

Electroencephalographic correlates of near-drowning encephalopathy in children.

Findings of the serial EEGs of 9 children involved in fresh water near-drowning were correlated with neurological signs and final outcome. Our observations revealed that in young near-drowning victims there is a distinct evolution of the EEG which differs considerably from any stereotyped classification outlined for other types of encephalopathies. In patients with a poor clinical outcome, the early phase of near-drowning encephalopathy was characterized electrically by diffuse delta waves, often with alpha or beta frequencies superimposed (alpha-delta and beta-delta pattern). Additional featu

EEG findings in fetal alcohol syndrome and Down syndrome children.

Results from previous studies evaluating the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of infants born to alcoholic mothers suggest that the neonatal EEG may be a sensitive measure of prenatal ethanol exposure. Few studies, however, have examined EEG records of adolescent children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The present study investigated the resting EEG recordings of 18 matched triads of FAS, Down syndrome, and normal control subjects. Significant reductions in mean power of the alpha frequencies (7.5-12 Hz) were seen for both clinical groups, however, each syndrome appeared to have distinct EEG sp

Delta response varies across problem types and aging, while theta remains predominantly occipital.

This study investigates alterations in problem-solving and problem-solving abilities associated with aging, utilizing EEG-Brain Oscillations. The study included 30 young and 30 middle-aged subjects. During the EEG recording, four questions were used for problem-solving. The analysis focused on delta and theta oscillatory patterns. In addition, correlation analysis examined relationships between EEG data and the correct answers' scores. There was a significant result in the delta response for 0-500 ms; the young group had a higher delta response over the frontal area for arithmetic and insight

BIPLEDs in akinetic mutism caused by bilateral anterior cerebral artery infarction.

INTRODUCTION: Akinetic mutism is described as a result of many disorders. Bilateral infarction of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) territory is reported rarely, however, often leading to akinetic mutism. CASE REPORT: We report a 70 year-old man with akinetic mutism due to bilateral ACA infarction. Electroencephalography, 24h after admission, showed bilateral independent periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges (BIPLEDs) in the frontal region and diffuse theta and polymorphic delta activity. DISCUSSION: Postanoxic encephalopathy, central nervous system infection and chronic seizure diso

Generalized and Lateralized Rhythmic Patterns.

The relationship between generalized and lateralized rhythmic delta activity (RDA) and seizures is more ambiguous than the relationship between periodic discharges and seizures. Although frontally predominant generalized RDA is not associated with seizures, occipitally predominant RDA may be associated with the absence of seizures. Lateralized RDA seems to be more strongly associated with the presence of seizure activity. Appropriate recognition of generalized RDA and lateralized rhythmic delta activity may be confounded by benign etiologies of RDA, such as phi rhythm, slow alpha variant, subc

Objective evaluation of major depressive disorder using sleep electroencephalography measured by an in-home portable one-channel device: a preliminary study.

PURPOSE: Decreased delta and increased alpha wave activity during sleep may be specific pathophysiological features of major depressive disorder; however, their usefulness as biomarkers remains unclear. We examined the use of mean alpha and delta wave power value indices during sleep to identify major depressive disorder using a portable electroencephalography device. METHODS: We compared the mean alpha and delta wave power value indices of six unmedicated patients with major depressive disorder and seven age- and sex-matched healthy controls using a portable electroencephalography device in

[The effect of short peptides isolated from the brain of a hibernating suslik on the rat EEG and behavior].

The intracerebroventricular injection of the peptides kyotorphin (KT), newkyotorphin (NKT), and Aps-Tyr (BS) changed rat behaviour. There was an increase in the rate of exploratory reactions, rearing, grooming, stereotypic scratching movements, yawning, stretching, hiccupping, sneezing. Similar effects had been earlier observed in rats after administration of the fraction (F, 1-10 kD) from the brain of hibernating ground squirrels in which the studied peptides were found. The EEG effects depended on a peptide dose. As in the case of F injection, KT in the dose of 4 mcg suppressed the theta- an

When a Pseudo-Infarct Electrocardiogram (ECG) Pattern in a Posterior Accessory (Wolff-Parkinson-White) Pathway Masks a True Inferior Infarct.

BACKGROUND Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) pattern is due to a pre-excitation leading to characteristic ECG changes in sinus rhythm as short PR interval, the presence of delta waves, wide QRS complexes, and potentially Q wave-T wave vector discordance (pseudo-infarct pattern). These later changes can mask the underlying ECG depolarizing solely through the His-Purkinje system. Our case highlights how the ECG of a WPW pattern with a pseudo-infarct pattern can in fact mask a true infarct on the underlying ECG without pre-excitation. CASE REPORT A 61-year-old diabetic man with a recent history of supr

Dopaminergic transmission in the midbrain ventral tegmental area in the induction of hippocampal theta rhythm.

Hippocampal rhythmic slow activity (RSA, theta) is regulated by many brainstem structures, including the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA). This work aimed at assessing the role of the dopaminergic (DA) transmission of the VTA in this regulation. Male Wistar rats (n=35) in urethane anaesthesia received an intra-VTA microinjection of either flupenthixol (FLU; doses of 5.0, 2.5, 1.25 and 0.625 μg) or amphetamine (AMPH; 2.5 and 5.0 μg) following control solvent microinjection. Peak power (Pmax) and corresponding peak frequency (Fmax) for delta and theta bands were extracted from EEG recording

Change in the electroencephalogram delta wave in the frontal cranial region of rats with the hyperventilation.

Hyperventilation is one way to cause activation on the electroencephalogram (EEG) to diagnose brain disorders. The hyperventilation is also known to affect on the delta power in EEG. This study divided the total delta wave into low, middle, and high bands corresponding to the wave frequency. The power in these three delta wave bands was examined in the frontal cranial region of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats hyperventilated with ventilation (VE) of 360, 540, and 720 ml/min for 5 min. The control group was ventilated normally with a volume of 160 ml/min. The results show that the relative power

EEG oscillations and related brain generators of phonation phases in long utterances.

While the role of brain rhythms in respiratory and speech motor control has been mainly explored during brief utterances, the specific involvement of brain rhythms in the transition of regulating subglottic pressure phases which are concomitant to specific muscle activation during prolonged phonation remains unexplored. This study investigates whether power spectral variations of the electroencephalogram brain rhythms are related specifically to prolonged phonation phases. High-density EEG and surface EMG were recorded in nineteen healthy participants while they repeatedly produced the syllabl

Does electroencephalogram phase variability account for reduced P3 brain potential in externalizing disorders?

OBJECTIVE: Amplitude deficits of the P3 event-related potential (ERP) are associated with externalizing psychopathology but little is known about the nature of underlying brain electrical activity that accounts for this amplitude reduction. We sought to understand if group differences in task-induced phase-locking in electroencephalographic (EEG) delta and theta frequencies may account for P3-externalizing associations. METHODS: Adult males (N=410) completed a visual oddball task and frontal and parietal P3-related delta- and theta-band phase-invariant evoked energy and inter-trial phase-lock

Delta sleep instability in children with chronic arthritis.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the expression of a cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) in slow wave sleep (SWS) in children with the well-defined chronic syndrome juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Twelve patients (9-17 years of age), 7 girls, with JIA were compared to matched controls by age, pubertal stage and gender. After one night of habituation in the sleep laboratory, sleep measurements were obtained by standard polysomnography with conventional sleep scoring and additional CAP analyses. The sleep parameters of the JIA and control groups were similar for sleep efficie
