Quantitative Evaluation of Caries and Calculus with Ultrahigh-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography.

Dental caries on the crown's surface is caused by the interaction of bacteria and carbohydrates, which then gradually alter the tooth's structure. In addition, calculus is the root of periodontal disease. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been considered to be a promising tool for identifying dental caries; however, diagnosing dental caries in the early stage still remains challenging. In this study, we proposed an ultrahigh-resolution OCT (UHR-OCT) system with axial and transverse resolutions of 2.6 and 1.8 μm for differentiating the early-stage dental caries and calculus. The same teeth

Evidence of brucellosis infection in the Milwaukee County Poor Farm Cemetery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Forty-seven skeletonized individuals from the Milwaukee County Poor Farm Cemetery (MCPFC) had DNA extracted from their dental calculus to look for the presence of respiratory pathogens. The MCPFC is curated by the Archaeology Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. According to the death records, respiratory infections and pneumonias were a leading cause of death. Polymerase Chain Reaction was run to examine the extracted DNA for evidence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis , Brucella species, and Streptococcus pneumoniae . Three individuals had IS711 present in their dental calculus, s

Microscopic view of scaling influence on the root, using different power and time settings.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to identify the appropriate power setting and operation time required to achieve optimal efficiency in calculus debridement while preventing excessive cementum loss. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The study included 30 extracted molars with heavy deposits of calculus, visible to the the naked eye. Experimental areas (3 × 4 mm) were delineated below the cementoenamel junction. The teeth were cut cross-sectionally and randomly allocated into three groups: low, medium, and high power settings. Oral health benefits of a daily dental chew in dogs.

An independent study was conducted to determine and quantify the oral care benefits of a daily edible dental chew in dogs as measured by plaque and calculus control, gingival indices, and oral malodor. A "clean mouth" test model was used comparing a commercial dry diet and a commercial dry diet plus one dental chew per day. The dental chew tested was representative of a retail canine dental chew. The test dental chew was a green-colored dental dog chew with a flexible texture that can be readily chewed by dogs. They are made with a knuckle bone shape on one end and a toothbrush shape on the ot

Oral malodor measurements on a tooth surface of dogs with gingivitis.

OBJECTIVE: To measure production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) responsible for halitosis on the crown surface of the maxillary fourth premolar of dogs with gingivitis. ANIMALS: 28 dogs owned by veterinary students who complained that their dogs had halitosis. PROCEDURE: Clinical dental indices (plaque index, calculus index, and gingival index) were measured on the most diseased maxillary fourth premolar tooth. Production of VSC from the crown surface of the tooth was recorded by use of a portable sulfide monitor. Measurements were performed several times on each dog over a 2-month perio

A Case of CHARGE Syndrome With Tooth Eruption Disturbance Caused by Severe Calculus Accumulation.

Individuals with disabilities who are unable to maintain oral intake are at high risk of inadequate oral hygiene because of reduced masticatory stimulation and impaired self-cleansing, leading to excessive dental calculus accumulation. However, the effects of this on tooth eruption are poorly understood. Herein, we report the case of an 18-year-old boy with CHARGE syndrome managed with gastrostomy feeding since childhood. Following prolonged inadequate oral care, severe dental calculus accumulated throughout the dentition. Thick calculi encased the mandibular right first and second deciduous m

Fish-eaters and farmers: dental pathology in the Arabian Gulf.

Twelve skeletal samples, previously published, from the Arabian Gulf have been used to trace differences in diet and subsistence patterns through an analysis of dental pathology. The skeletons date from 3,000 BC to AD 1,500 and cover a variety of geographical locations: off-shore islands, Eastern Arabia, and Oman. The dental conditions analyzed are attrition, caries, calculus, abscessing, and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL). Results indicate four basic patterns of dental disease which, while not mutually exclusive, correspond to four basic subsistence patterns. Marine dependency, represented by t

Prospects for applying fluorescence spectroscopy to diagnose the hard tissues of a tooth.

This article deals with the autofluorescence spectra from the hard tissues of a tooth, both in norm and pathology. An investigation was made on 30 extracted human teeth. The measurements were made both for the intact hard tissues of a tooth, such as enamel, dentine, cementum, and root canal, and for the tissues pathologically affected by a caries (superficial, intermediate, and deep) and by a dental calculus. It was found that the fluorescent spectra from enamel, dentine, cementum, and from the regions affected by a caries and dental calculus were identical in form. All the spectra revealed a

[Tartar and periodontal disease--a cofactor in etiopathogenesis].

Calculus may be considered as an aggregate of calcified deposits or deposits that are going to calcify in the oral cavity. From a topographical point of view calculus is classified in supragingival and subgingival calculus. Calculus is composed by inorganic (70-80%) and organic (20-30%) components. Calculus results from calcification of plaque and epithelial cells exfoliated from oral mucosae. Calcification phenomena (carbonic acid theory) are caused by a rapid fall down of salivary acidity when saliva springs out gland ducts. In fact in the mouth there is a lower pressure of carbon dioxide th

Dental Calculi of Siberian Natives, Russian Settlers, and Korean People of Joseon Dynasty Period in the 16th to 19th Century Eurasia Continent.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of calculus is known to be variable by difference in diets or subsistence strategy between human populations. However, this situation has not been confirmed so far for hunter-gatherers and farming people in terms of history. In this study, we tried to reveal the association of diets or subsistence with calculus in different historical populations: Siberian natives, Joseon period Korean people, and Russian settlers in Siberia. DESIGN: We examined the teeth of Siberian natives (hunter-gatherers), Russian (wheat farming) settlers, and Joseon (rice farming) people in six

The crystalline components of dental calculi: human vs. dog.

Dental calculus from the dog was found to consist principally of the calcite form of calcium carbonate mixed with small amounts of apatite; other calcium phosphates, consistently present in human calculus, were not present in dog calculus. Precipitable calcium salts from human saliva were mainly apatite; for the dog the principal precipitated salt was calcium carbonate (calcite form).

A new system to detect residual subgingival calculus: in vitro detection limits.

AIM: We recently introduced an experimental surface detection system based on a conventional dental ultrasonic scaler. This device automatically discriminates cementum and dental calculus, which is the prerequisite for complete and thorough calculus removal. In the present study, the detection limits of this device were tested in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 50 extracted teeth, subgingival calculus was gradually removed using a Gracey curette. During this stepwise procedure, detection properties of the surface detection system were continuously monitored and systematically verified until

Benefits of a 'dental hygiene chew' on the periodontal health of cats.

A study was undertaken to determine the clinical efficacy of a chew designed to improve dental hygiene in the cat. The accumulation of dental deposits (plaque and calculus) and the effect on gingival inflammation were assessed in 15 client-owned cats while on two different regimens. In the first leg of the study, the cats were fed a nutritionally complete dry diet supplemented with one dental hygiene chew. In the second leg of the study, the same cats were fed only the nutritionally complete diet. This study demonstrated that the daily addition of the chew to the dry diet resulted in significa
