IGF1 (Insulin Growth Factor, 1) was intentionally applied onto pulp tissues, aiming to provoque a dentine regeneration process through the stimulation of the dentinoblasts' potententials. 72 cavities were hence performed on rabbit molars, intentionally exposing the dental pulp. Different concentrations of IGF1 were then applied; The histo and anatomo-pathological observations showed persistent vitality of the pulp without any sign of necrosis, even 6 weeks after the IGF1 application. Dentinoblasts layers (as an indication of the regeneration activity) were counted, according to a pre-establish

This review aimed to determine the prevalence of species of yellow, purple and green microbial complexes in root canals (RC) and periodontal pockets (PP) of teeth with endodontic-periodontal lesions. For this purpose, two reviewers searched the literature up to January 2022. Studies reporting the prevalence of species of the yellow, purple and green microbial complexes in teeth diagnosed with endodontic-periodontal lesions were included. The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed using the 14 criteria from the NIH Quality Assessment Tool. Of 1,611 references identified in the initia

Modern day endodontics is undergoing a massive change with the introduction of new molecular based techniques for microbial identification. This review focuses on the microbiota in untreated and root-filled canals. It will also describe briefly the recent developments in microbial identification and the mechanisms by which certain species of microbes are able to invade and establish themselves in the root canal.

Although taurodontism has been reported in many syndromes which also feature hypodontia, there have been no previous investigations on the prevalence of taurodontism in patients with hypodontia. Using a novel biometric method for the assessment of taurodontism, we found that 34.8% of 66 patients with hypodontia had at least one mandibular first permanent molar which showed taurodontism compared to only 7.5% of a control group without hypodontia. The trait may be seen both unilaterally and bilaterally and is most frequently seen in patients with multiple missing teeth. The results indicate that

BACKGROUND: Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) Channels constitute a large family of non-selective permeable ion channels involved in the perception of environmental stimuli with a central and continuously expanding role in oral tissue homeostasis. Recent studies indicate the regulatory role of TRPs in pulp physiology, oral mucosa sensation, dental pain nociception and salivary gland secretion. This review provides an update on the diverse functions of TRP channels in the physiology of the oral cavity, with emphasis on their cellular location, the underlying molecular mechanisms and clinical s

This article refers to the contemporary aspects about the carious lesions in the deepest parts of a cavity near the pulp. In these situations the problem that arises is to how deeply this carious dentine should be excavated without the risk of destroying the pulp. On this question there have been expressed two divergent opinions based also on two divergent theories. The one theory supports that during the carious process the microorganisms proceed the decalcification of the dentin, whereas the other theory supports the opposite view. According to the new aspects, in acute carious lesions the d

A direct or indirect effect of the intake of medication on the pulp itself has not yet been described in the literature. The effect of local anesthetics on the pulp, on the other hand, has been documented. Although local anaesthesia has been employed in dentistry for many years, most investigations of its action have only considered the effect on the nerves within the pulp using traditional methods. Recently it has become clear that the nerves and blood vessels of the pulp do not act in isolation but are closely related. In this respect it has been shown that there exists a direct relationship

Deep tooth decay approaching the pulp may develop into pulpitis; to prevent this, pulp cells need to balance the rapid immune response to avoid rapid swelling of the pulp. Current treatment of deep decay that approaches the pulp involves the application of drugs that induce low-level inflammation in the dental pulp to promote its repair, but this treatment is sometimes insufficient. However, the unsuccessful treatment often resulted in pulpitis. The C5a-C5aR is the initial stage of the immune cascade response. Blocking the binding of C5a-C5aR can slow the immune response in the narrow pulp cav

Air abrasion is regaining popularity especially in the area of pediatric dentistry due to its ease of use and its advantages. Due to the lost of tactile information, while using this technique, there is an increased risk for pulpal exposure. On the other hand, Ca(OH)2 medicament has been proven to induce dentin bridge formation, but an adequate sealing seems to be even more important that the capping material used. The purpose of this study was two fold: to assess the pulpal response after pulpal exposure by air abrasion and to evaluate the healing potential after using Ca(OH)2 medicament or L

The pulps of 36 permanent dog teeth were mechanically exposed and capped with Dycal, calcium hydroxide powder mixed with saline, or Teflon. At 2, 14, and 28 days postoperatively, nine teeth treated with the materials were extracted (treated control teeth): A suspension of streptococci was then injected intravenously. Twenty-four h later the dogs were killed and both the 27 treated teeth (experimental group) and 6 unoperated control teeth were removed in tissue blocks. Tissue sections were examined for the presence of bacteria, hard tissue formation, inflammatory cell response and necrosis. Bac

A fundamental issue of restorative treatment is assessing the different conditions of cases not only from tooth-to-tooth but also from the activity of each caries lesion and the size of the cavity. In addition, restorative treatment is sometimes carried out for prosthetic and cosmetic purposes and involves cutting sound, unaffected dentin. These aspects are outlined in classic textbooks and are based on the principles described by Black (1908). However, each factor and its relative importance has changed over the years. Significant time has been devoted to improving the important technical asp

Treatment of cavities with citric acid cavity cleanser, also used as an etchant, before restoration with zinc oxide-eugenol cement, was toxic to the human dental pulp in comparison to sham-treated controls. The cleanser caused a significantly (P less than .01) greater intensity and incidence (P less than .01) of inflammation. The added insult from cleanser pretreatment caused destruction of the odontoblast processes withnin the cut dentinal tubules, and an increase in diameter of the tubules. These effects on dentin and odontoblasts probably contributed to the observed increase in adverse pulp

Carnassial teeth, as one of the most important teeth in dogs, are commonly affected by different types of injuries and pathological disorders, which require endodontic treatment. Lateral canals, which leave the main root canal, and apical deltas are present in the root canal system of dogs. These canals represent small branches that leave the main root canal at a sharp angle and terminate in a region of the periodontal ligament on the external root surface. In this study, 200 teeth were included, of which 100 were superior fourth premolars and 100 were inferior first molars. Lateral canals wer

AIM: To test the hypothesis that dentine and pulp protection by conditioning-and-sealing is no less effective than using a conventional calcium hydroxide lining.
METHODOLOGY: A cohort of healthy adults requiring a new or replacement restoration in a posterior tooth was recruited in six general practices. All procedures received local Ethics Committee approval. Exclusion criteria included signs and symptoms of pulp necrosis or inflammation, and patients unable to commit to a long-term trial. Cavity preparations were randomized to receive a calcium hydroxide lining or conditioning-and-sealing w

Pulp stones (PSs) are calcified masses that can be found in the pulp cavity of any deciduous or permanent tooth. They can be observed in healthy, diseased, and even unerupted or impacted teeth. Calcifications within the pulp may lead to a poorer outcome of a root canal procedure, as they can block access to the root canals, and hinder their subsequent cleaning and shaping. The paper describes 4 clinical cases of denticles located in the coronal and radicular pulp. Therapeutic methods of PS removal with different techniques and instruments are discussed. Specialist root canal treatment (RCT) wa
