AIM: To identify the role of astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) and the mechanism underlying the inflammatory response in dental pulp cells.
METHODOLOGY: Astrocyte elevated gene-1 expression was detected at different stages of pulpitis in a rat model using immunohistochemistry. RT-qPCR and Western blot were used to assess AEG-1 expression in human dental pulp cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The LPS-induced expression of inflammatory cytokine genes was quantified by RT-qPCR in cells transfected with AEG-1 or negative control (NC) siRNA. Immunofluorescence and Western blot were uti

Pulp exposure remains a source of great frustration to the dental practitioner, because the outcome of any pulp capping procedure is marked with uncertainty. The clinician is often unaware of the coexistence of possible pulp pathology at the time of damage to the pulpal wall. Until a more accurate clinically and histologic diagnosis can be made, pulp capping as a clinical treatment, can only be rendered on an empirical basis.

We carried out clinical and histological investigations on teeth with superficial and deep caries in which we made an artificial exposure of the pulp to check the reactivity of the endodont. After one year we observed using clinical and x-ray methods successful treatment in 93.4% of the teeth. Histologically the number of successful treatment was 100.0% in teeth with superficial caries and 80.0% in teeth with deep caries.

PURPOSE: To assess clinical decision-making patterns in pulp therapy of primary teeth among Tunisian dental practitioners and explore the influence of diagnostic uncertainty on treatment selection.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, scenario-based survey was conducted among 263 dental practitioners in Tunisia (March-August 2025), including general dentists and specialists involved in paediatric care. A structured questionnaire based on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) guidelines presented three standardised clinical scenarios with increasing diagnostic complexity: asymptomatic deep

Exposure of the dental pulp, through a caries lesion, accidentally during routine cavity preparation, or as a result of tooth fracture, is a clinical reality that requires optimal treatment. The potential for healing by formation of a dentinal bridge is good, provided that the pulp is not inflamed. Calcium hydroxide has a long history of inducing dentinal bridge formation to promote successful healing. Resin composites are emerging as alternative materials for pulp capping, but healing is slower, and relatively little clinical experience is available for analysis. The prognosis for healing is

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of incomplete caries removal in permanent molars with deep dental caries.
METHODS: One hundred and two permanent molars with deep dental caries were treated with partial caries removal combined with tight resin restoration. The patients were followed up for more than 6 months, the pulp retention rate and subjective feelings were evaluated.
RESULTS: Ninety out of 97 teeth had a good filling and pulp vitality, the success rate was 92.8%, and 79.9% patients had less than mild comfort during the treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Partial caries removal can reduce

Post-mortem examination of 16 donkey cheek teeth (CT) with caries (both peripheral and infundibular) and pulpar exposure were performed using computerised axial tomography (CAT), histology and scanning electron microscopy. CAT imaging was found to be useful to assess the presence and extent of caries and pulp exposure in individual donkey CT. Histology identified the loss of occlusal secondary dentine, and showed pulp necrosis in teeth with pulpar exposure. Viable pulp was present more apically in one exposed pulp horn, with its occlusal aspect sealed off from the exposed aspect of the pulp ho

INTRODUCTION: Timely resolution of pulp inflammation is a prerequisite for the healing of inflamed dental pulp. Stromal cells, particularly fibroblasts, play a critical role in the inflammation resolution process. Resolvin E1 (RvE1) is a lipid-derived endogenous proresolution molecule that mediates this resolution process. In the present study, we investigated the effects of RvE1 on dental fibroblasts during the pathogenesis of pulpitis.
METHODS: The pulp tissues in maxillary incisors of male Sprague-Dawley rats (N = 50) were exposed to the oral environment for 0, 9, 24, and 48 hours, after w

A fundamental issue of restorative treatment is assessing the different conditions of cases not only from tooth-to-tooth but also from the activity of each caries lesion and the size of the cavity. In addition, restorative treatment is sometimes carried out for prosthetic and cosmetic purposes and involves cutting sound, unaffected dentin. These aspects are outlined in classic textbooks and are based on the principles described by Black (1908). However, each factor and its relative importance has changed over the years. Significant time has been devoted to improving the important technical asp

Formocresol pulpotomy (FP) in the United States is most frequently used to treat asymptomatic caries near the pulp in primary teeth. Indirect pulp therapy (IPT) is also indicated and has a significantly higher long-term success. Pulpotomy is thought to be indicated for primary teeth with carious pulp exposures, but research shows the majority of such teeth are nonvital or questionable for treatment with vital pulp therapy. IPT has a significantly higher success in treating all primary first molars, but especially those with reversible pulpitis compared with FP. The purpose of this article was

BACKGROUND: Scientific knowledge regarding alpaca dentistry is relatively limited despite its clinical implications. The present gap in available supportive data leads to limited treatment options for dental pathology in alpacas in comparison to other species. The main goal of this study was to gain novel insights into the general and pulp morphology of maxillary cheek teeth to allow development of more advanced treatment strategies in the future. Also, the risk of causing pulp exposure when floating maxillary cheek teeth was of particular interest. Concurent research focusing on the anatomy o

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) in mature permanent teeth with carious pulp exposure has been a matter of debate, with root canal therapy being the conventional standard of care. Previously reported negative outcomes for VPT in these teeth were based on data from studies that have used calcium hydroxide in direct pulp capping and partial and full pulpotomy. The introduction of hydraulic calcium silicate-based materials with sealing and bioactive potentials have opened a new era in VPT with more favorable results. Understanding the histopathology and histobacteriology of the cariously exposed pulp and

In regions where preventive dentistry is widespread, tooth loss due to root fracture occurs approximately 10 times more frequently than that due to caries and periodontal disease. Root fracture is most likely to occur in non-vital teeth, where the dental pulp has been removed, often through a procedure known as pulpectomy. However, super minimally invasive pulp (SMIP) therapy has recently been reported as a novel treatment approach for pulpitis of any degree. In this study, SMIP therapy was performed to preserve the vitality of teeth in two patients with severe pulpitis. Case one involved a 35

Among the goals of pulp capping are to manage bacteria, arrest caries progression, stimulate pulp cells to form new dentin, and produce a durable seal that protects the pulp complex. This article will provide a general discussion of direct and indirect pulp capping procedures, offering practitioners a pragmatic and science-based clinical protocol for treatment of vital pulp exposures. A clinical case will be presented in which a novel light-cured resin-modified mineral trioxide aggregate hybrid material was used to manage a mechanical vital pulp exposure that occurred during deep caries excava

Concentrations of the protease inhibitors alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 2-macroglobulin were determined in normal and inflamed human dental pulps. Carious pulpal exposure which is associated with polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration and release of lysosomal enzymes was chosen as the point of verifiable inflammatory activity in the pulp. Normal samples were collected from nondiseased third molar teeth treatment planned for extraction and inflamed human pulps were collected from teeth with deep carious lesions. One half of each sample was assayed for concentration of protease inhibitors by e
