OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the duration of gingival healing after the stage II surgery of dental implantation for periodontitis patients and to provide clinical guidelines for implant restoration.
METHODS: Twenty-nine periodontitis patients who had implantation surgery and achieved osseointegration were operated with stage II surgery (a total of 60 pieces of implants). The height of buccal gingival of each implant was measured twice after the stage II surgery. All implants were measured at the lowest point ofbuccal gingival after one week. The implants were randomly divided in

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are among the most common health problems worldwide, and they are heavily influenced by social inequalities. Routine and secondary dental data can provide valuable insights into care provision and help identify gaps in care and risk factors. This work aims to analyze the current state of routine and secondary data use in the field, highlight research gaps, and develop implications.
METHOD: This scoping review was conducted according to the method developed by Arksey and O'Malley, which was partially refined by Levac, Colquhoun, and O'Brien. Several databases were sea

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a common chronic oral disease, posing a serious public health issue. By analyzing large datasets, machine learning shows potential in addressing this problem. This study employs bibliometric analysis to explore emerging topics, collaborations, key authors, and research trends in Southeast Asia related to the application of machine learning in dental caries management.
METHODS: A comprehensive selection using the Scopus database to obtain relevant research, covering publications from inception to July 2024 was done. We employed the Bibliometric approaches, includin

BACKGROUND: To assess the educational impact of a one-to-one tablet PC (TPC) program by analysing university students' learning skills and related scores of the National Dental Examination (NDE) in Germany.
METHODS: The study design was a mixed-method approach consisting of a survey and a comparison of NDE scores. Students received a loaned non-preloaded and non-managed TPC during three consecutive orthodontic semesters. Usability and learning benefits in clinical and nonclinical settings were assessed by a survey. After the participating students had passed the NDE in a standard period of st

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic enforced the cessation of routine dentistry and the creation of local urgent dental care systems in the UK. General dental practices are obligated by NHS guidance to remain open and provide remote consultation and referral where appropriate to patients having pain or problems.
AIMS: To compare two urgent dental centres with different triage and referral systems with regard to quality and appropriateness of referrals, and patient management outcomes.
METHODS: 110 consecutive referrals received by a primary care urgent dental centre and a secondary care urge

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic arthritis in childhood and represents a series of chronic inflammatory arthritides that develop before 16 years of age.
METHODS: In 2020, investigators with an interest in the management of JIA engaged the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network by conducting a preliminary qualitative questionnaire ("Quick Poll") that comprised 6 questions about JIA management.
RESULTS: A total of 604 persons responded. Results suggested that there was an interest in the management of JIA, but many clinicians did not feel th

Periodontitis and dental caries are the most widespread non-communicable oral disorders worldwide, affecting approximately 3.5 billion people worldwide. Nevertheless, existing in vitro models do not accurately emulate the intricate interactions between the oral microbiome, the host immune response, and the fluctuating physicochemical environment. This lack of physiologically realistic models makes it extremely difficult to understand disease mechanisms and to design effective therapies. While organ-on-a-chip technology has revolutionized biomedical research, its application in oral healthcare

Dental-derived mesenchymal stem cells (DMSC), owing to their self-renewal capacity and multi-lineage differentiation potential, have demonstrated significant promise in the field of oral tissue regeneration. Mitochondria, as essential organelles within cells, can not only be responsible for energy metabolism but also influence the maintenance of stem cell stemness and the direction of differentiation by regulating cellular metabolic processes, apoptosis, and signal transduction pathways. In recent years, the mechanisms by which mitochondria participating in the osteogenic and odontogenic diffe

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to present the development of a database (dataset) of panoramic radiographs.
STUDY DESIGN: Three radiologists labeled an image set consisting of 936 panoramic radiographs. Labeling includes tooth numbering (including teeth present and missing) and annotation of dental conditions (e.g., caries, dental restoration, residual root, endodontic treatment, implant, fixed prosthesis, incisal wear). The annotation process was performed in a Picture Archive and Communication System software customized for the study purposes using a small bounding box to delimit the

INTRODUCTION: Initial orthograde root canal therapy (RCT) is used to treat dentoalveolar pathosis. The effect RCT has on pain intensity has been frequently reported, but the effect on other dimensions of pain has not. Also, the lack of large prospective studies involving diverse groups of patients and practitioners who are not involved in data collection suggest that there are multiple opportunities for bias to be introduced when these data are systematically aggregated.
METHODS: This prospective observational study assessed pain intensity, duration, and its interference with daily activities

A novel full-contour monolithic zirconia restoration is fabricated through a fully digital workflow combined with three-dimensional (3D) gel deposition technique. Compared with conventional subtractive manufacturing, this approach enables the controlled and uniform deposition of nano-zirconia particles during forming, effectively minimizing packing defects. The wet-forming process also avoids machining defects that may occur during the milling of pre-sintered zirconia, thereby improving the internal homogeneity, density, and translucency of the restorations. Furthermore, nanoporous bonding sur

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontists have many techniques to treat anterior open bites and must involve patients in making treatment decisions. This study aimed to investigate orthodontic treatment plan acceptance by United States adults with anterior open bites and to identify associations between treatment acceptance and patient demographics and dentofacial characteristics.
METHODS: A prospective, observational cohort study enrolled the patients of 91 orthodontic providers. A total of 345 adults were included in the sample. Provider personal and practice demographics were captured. Patient demograph

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, or NIDCR, in 2001 sponsored the establishment of Centers for Research to Reduce Oral Health Disparities. The centers are based at Boston University; New York University; the University of Michigan; the University of Washington; and the University of California, San Francisco. Reflecting the importance of research to reduce disparities, the centers, along with related grants, represent one of the largest financial commitments ever made by the NIDCR. The centers are sponsored in part by the National Center on Mi

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Inadequate diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care provided in the emergency department could let the patients revisit shortly after being seen. The aim of this study was to evaluate the emergency dental revisits by using Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Dental dataset from NHIRD was used to analyze the demographic characteristics of emergency dental revisits in Taiwanese population from 1999 to 2012. In addition, the conditions of emergency dental revisits were also identified based on the International Classifica

OBJECTIVES: This study quantified and compared practice patterns of treatment for deep occlusal carious lesions among Japanese dentists, and tested the hypothesis that dentist characteristics are significantly associated with the decision to choose an indirect pulp capping (IPC), a form of selective carious tissue removal that involves leaving a thin layer of demineralized tissue over the pulp, that is then covered with a protective liner.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire survey of dentists affiliated with the Dental Practice-based Research Network Japan
