INTRODUCTION: Despite the notable progress in developing artificial intelligence-based tools for caries detection in bitewings, limited research has addressed the detection and staging of secondary caries. Therefore, we aimed to develop a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based algorithm for these purposes using a novel approach for determining lesion severity.
METHODS: We used a dataset from a Dutch dental practice-based research network containing 2,612 restored teeth in 413 bitewings from 383 patients aged 15-88 years and trained the Mask R-CNN architecture with a Swin Transformer backbon

The possible effects of isolated dentine matrix components on odontoblast secretory activity were investigated in vivo by implantation of lyophilized fractions of these components into cavities prepared in ferret canine teeth. After implantations as short as 14 days there was significant deposition of reactionary dentine by the odontoblasts beneath the cavity and this response increased in a non-linear manner with time of implantation. In contrast, control cavities lacking the dentine matrix components showed no evidence of reactionary dentine deposition. Examination of teeth at early periods

BACKGROUND: Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) is an inherited dentine defect which affects both the primary and secondary dentitions. Shields et al. in 1973 suggested a classification of DI within three types: type I, associated with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), type II and type III. Although the varying clinical, radiographic and histological findings in DI have been described in detail, an available method for closer examination of the abnormal dentine matrix, electron microscopy, has seldom been used. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies can help to understand the pathogenesi

INTRODUCTION: Radiographic detection of caries lesions adjacent to restorations is challenging because of the limitations of two-dimensional imaging and difficulties distinguishing true lesions from restorative or anatomical radiolucencies. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) have been introduced to assist radiographic interpretation; however, different AI tools may yield variable diagnostic outputs, and their comparative performance remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic performance of commercial and experimental AI algorithms for detec

This study aimed to investigate the age-related alterations in mesial roots of mandibular first molar in terms of root canal curvature values, dentin thickness, interorifice distance, deviation from apical foramen, and location of apical foramen using a three-dimensional curvature measurement method and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Forty-five mesial roots of mandibular first molars from three age groups (Group 1: ≤ 30 years, Group 2: 31-59 years, Group 3: ≥ 60 years) were scanned using micro-CT. The central axis of each mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canal was analyzed using cubic B-spl

We have evaluated and compare the effect of different exogenous MMP inhibitors on adhesive physical properties of dental adhesives, bond strength, micro permeability and MMP substrate activity. 180-grit Sic paper was used to obtain the superficial dentin surface from each and every tooth after the wet grinding procedure. Dentin was exposed to four different MMP inhibitors to evaluate the effect on resin adhesive dentin interface. The four groups used in study were: 2% chlorhexidine digluconate, 2% doxycycline solution, 5% Proanthocyanidin (PR), Control Group. We evaluated and compared the four

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of single and multiple dentinal lesions on the dental pulps of rats. 3H-proline was used to measure pulpal reactionary dentin deposition, and 3H-thymidine was used to measure pulpal cell proliferation by radioautography. Data were compared by factorial analysis of variance and a post-hoc Tukey test. A significant increase in radiolabeled collagenous proteins within reactionary dentin and pulpal cell labeling indices were evident coincident to single dentinal injuries, compared with controls (p < 0.001). After double injuries, the radiolabele

The reestablishment and rate of osteodentin and dentin matrix formation in 27 apicoectomized replanted and 20 control incisors in cats were studied after Procion H8-BS vital staining. In control teeth the pattern of matrix formation differed in the various pulpal zones, with a higher rate of matrix formed toward apical areas, most dominantly in maxillary incisors. Osteodentin formation could be traced after a lag period of more than 10 days after replantation. Thirty and 60 days postoperatively osteodentin matrix was found in the total pulpal length in 83% and 73% of the teeth, respectively. A

Citric acid conditioning of dentine has been proposed as an efficacious treatment for promoting re-attachment after periodontal surgery. This study investigated the pulpal reactions to periodontal surgery combined with citric acid (pH 1) demineralization of exposed dentine for 3 min. 9 cats were used as the experimental animals, with each cat providing 1 negative and 1 positive control and 2 experimental canine teeth. Evaluation was over 3 observation periods, with 3 cats in each period being sacrificed at 4, 21 and 83 days. Positive control teeth, which underwent periodontal surgery combining

OBJECTIVES: Conceptually, two types of tertiary dentine may be produced in response to caries and environmental irritations: "reactionary dentine" that is secreted by existing primary odontoblasts and "reparative dentine", formed after the death of the odontoblasts by proliferation and differentiation of progenitor cells into odontoblast-like cells. Because histologic evidence for tubular dentine generated by newly differentiated odontoblast-like cells is lacking in human teeth, the present study examined pulpal cellular changes associated with caries/restorations, in the presence or absence o

Dentin dysplasia is a rare, hereditary disorder affecting the dental hard tissue. It is a congenital, autosomal dominant disease of unknown etiology that affects 1:100,000 populations. It may present as such affecting only the dental hard tissue or as one of the symptoms of underlying diseases such as calcinosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, rhematoid arthitis, Vitaminosis D and Branchioskeletogenital syndrome. This was first described by Ballschmiede as rootless teeth in 1920 and termed as dentin dysplasia by Rushton in the year 1939. It is classified into Type I, II and III, in which Type III aff

The wetness of dentin surfaces, the presence of pulpal pressure, and the thickness of dentin are extremely important variables during bonding procedures, especially when testing bond strength of adhesive materials in vitro with the intention of simulating in vivo conditions. The ultimate goal of a bonded restoration is to attain an intimate adaptation of the restorative material with the dental substrate. This task is difficult to achieve as the bonding process is different for enamel and for dentin-dentin is more humid and more organic than enamel. While enamel is predominantly mineral, denti

Tooth wear occurs during normal mastication. Pathologic wear, including abrasion and erosion, may also take place. Formation of reactionary and reparative dentin and obturation of dentinal tubules are biologic responses that compensate for the loss of tissue. Physical trauma to teeth will affect the blood supply to the pulp. Extensive physical trauma may result in the formation of mineralized, often bonelike tissue in the pulp chamber. Minor trauma, such as that associated with orthodontic tooth movement, may exert transient effects on the pulp or it may result in permanent structural changes.
