Hypochondriacal concerns in panic disorder and major depressive disorder: a comparison.

OBJECTIVE: To gain perspective on the relationship between hypochondriasis and panic disorder, we compared the occurrence of hypochondriasis in patients with panic disorder (N= 59) and major depressive disorder (N= 27). METHODS: Patients who participated in separate drug treatment trials were assessed at baseline and eight weeks using the Whiteley Index of Hypochondriasis. RESULTS: At baseline, the Whiteley Index score was greater for patients with panic disorder than for those with major depressive disorder. At eight weeks, a statistically significant reduction in the mean hypochondriasis s

[Integrated treatment strategies in panic disorder with agoraphobia and depressive disorder].

Two patients suffering from a panic disorder (agoraphobia) as well as a depressive disorder and alcohol abuse showed marked improvement when given a combination of pharmacotherapy and behavior therapy. The feasibility of this combination treatment in the context of understanding both the theory and therapy of panic disturbances is discussed in these two case histories.

Disrupted Structural Covariance in Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Shared clinical features and genetic factors in schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) have led to the hypothesis of common pathophysiological mechanisms. This study aims to elucidate aberrant transdiagnostic structural covariance patterns across these disorders employing a multivariate analytical approach. STUDY DESIGN: Structural magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from a sample of 704 subjects, comprising 244 healthy controls, 119 first-episode treatment-naïve SCZ individuals, 159 BD individuals, and 182 treatmen

Adolescent and Adult Transitions From Major Depressive Disorder to Bipolar Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Bipolar disorder (BD) often first appears in adolescence after onset of major depressive disorder (MDD), but diagnosis and treatment are commonly delayed. This delay is a concern because untreated BD is associated with adverse long-term outcomes, a more recurrent disease course and difficult-to-treat illness, and suicide attempts and deaths. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of age at MDD onset with early transition to BD and the subsequent use of psychiatric inpatient services as a severity indicator. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study analyze

Cardiovascular variations in patients with major depressive disorder versus bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating depression in major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder is challenging in clinical practice. Therefore, reliable biomarkers are urgently needed to differentiate between these diseases. This study's main objective was to assess whether cardiac autonomic function can distinguish patients with unipolar depression (UD), bipolar depression (BD), and bipolar mania (BM). METHODS: We recruited 791 patients with mood disorders, including 191 with UD, 286 with BD, and 314 with BM, who had been drug free for at least 2 weeks. Cardiovascular status was measured using hear

Altered brain regional homogeneity, depressive symptoms, and cognitive impairments in medication-free female patients with current depressive episodes in bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although symptoms of depressive episodes in patients with bipolar depressive episodes (BDE) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are similar, the treatment strategies for these disorders are completely different, suggesting that BDE and MDD have different neurobiological backgrounds. In this study, we examined the relationship between brain function and clinical symptoms, particularly cognitive function, in female individuals with bipolar disorder and MDD experiencing depressive episodes. METHODS: Regional homogeneity (ReHo) was analyzed in 51 medication-free female patients with B

The Impact of a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in SIGMAR1 on Depressive Symptoms in Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Ample evidence suggested a role of sigma-1 receptor in affective disorders since the interaction of numerous antidepressants with sigma receptors was discovered. A recent study on Japanese subjects found a genetic variant within the encoding gene SIGMAR1 (rs1800866A>C) associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). We aimed to evaluate the same polymorphism in both MDD and bipolar disorder (BD) as well as its relationship to response to treatment with antidepressants and mood stabilizers. METHODS: A total of 238 MDD patients treated for an acute episode of depression, 132 BD p

Subthreshold depressive disorder in adolescents: predictors of escalation to full-syndrome depressive disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Subthreshold depressive disorder is one of the best established risk factors for the onset of full-syndrome depressive disorders. However, many youths with subthreshold depressive disorder do not develop full-syndrome depression. We examined predictors of escalation to full-syndrome depressive disorders in a community sample of 225 adolescents with subthreshold depressive disorder. METHOD: Criteria for subthreshold depressive disorder were an episode of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure lasting at least 1 week and at least two of the seven other DSM-IV-associated symp

Exhaustion Disorder in Primary Care: A Comparison With Major Depressive Disorder and Adjustment Disorder.

Exhaustion disorder (ED) was introduced to the Swedish version of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10) 2005. Primarily characterized by general fatigue and cognitive deficits, ED has become one of the most common mental health diagnoses in Sweden. Little is still known regarding the discriminative validity of the ED diagnosis and how it relates to other diagnostic constructs. The study aimed to investigate the discriminative validity of ED compared with two similar diagnoses, major depressive disorder (MDD) and adjustment disorder (AD). Using data from a sample o

Shared and disorder-specific functional alterations in generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) show substantial clinical overlap, yet their shared and disorder-specific intrinsic functional abnormalities remain unclear. This study examined regional brain activity and whole-brain functional integration in GAD and MDD using resting-state fMRI. METHODS: Forty-two GAD patients, 43 MDD patients, and 83 healthy controls underwent resting-state fMRI. ALFF and FCS were calculated to assess regional spontaneous activity and whole-brain functional integration, respectively. Group differences were tested using voxe

[Depression and manic-depressive disorders].

The two major subtypes of manic-depressive illness are bipolar disorder and recurrent major depressive disorder. Biological data strongly indicate that a significant genetic factor is involved in the development of manic-depressive illness. But, stressful life events, environmental stress and premorbid personality factors may also be involved in other important etiologic factors. Some research data indicate that cyclothymic disorder and temperamental disorders may be considered as mild forms of bipolar disorders so called "subaffective disorders". The identification of clinical or biological f

The role of educational attainment and brain morphology in major depressive disorder: Findings from the ENIGMA major depressive disorder consortium.

Brain structural abnormalities and low educational attainment are consistently associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), yet there has been little research investigating the complex interaction of these factors. Brain structural alterations may represent a vulnerability or differential susceptibility marker, and in the context of low educational attainment, predict MDD. We tested this moderation model in a large multisite sample of 1958 adults with MDD and 2921 controls (aged 18 to 86) from the ENIGMA MDD working group. Using generalized linear mixed models and within-sample split-half

Major depressive disorder in chronic heart failure patients: Does silent cerebral infarction cause major depressive disorder in this patient population?

OBJECTIVE: Depression frequently occurs in patients with heart failure as similar pathophysiological mechanisms present in both these diseases. Patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) have a high incidence of clinically asymptomatic silent cerebral infarction (SCI). This study aimed to evaluate the relation between SCI and major depressive disorder (MDD), and between MDD and clinical and biochemical parameters in DCM patients. METHODS: Patients with ischemic and non-ischemic DCM who had chronic heart failure (CHF) (39 male, 10 female, age 60±10 years) were included in the study. Mean patie

The effects of intranasal esketamine on on-road driving performance in patients with major depressive disorder or persistent depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Intranasal esketamine demonstrates rapid improvement of depressive symptoms. However, transient adverse effects (dissociation, sedation and dizziness) may occur, which could impact driving performance. AIMS: To evaluate the effects of 84 mg intranasal esketamine on driving performance in unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) or persistent depressive disorder (PDD) patients. METHODS: The study consisted of two parts. Part A was a single-blind, double-dummy, randomized three-period, cross-over study to compare effects of esketamine versus placebo on next morning driving, 18 ± 2

Posttraumatic stress disorder comorbidity in patients undergoing ECT for major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not recognized as an indication for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). However, research indicates promise for this treatment modality. To elucidate the effects of ECT for treating PTSD, prospective research is needed. The first step in assessing the feasibility of such research is to determine if many patients being treated with ECT have comorbid PTSD. This study examined the PTSD comorbidity rates and compared demographic data among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who were treated with ECT vs patients with MDD who were not treat

Comparison of serum protein profiles between major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder are prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disorders that are difficult to distinguish, as their diagnosis is based on behavioural observations and subjective symptoms. Quantitative protein profile analysis might help to objectively distinguish between these disorders and increase our understanding of their pathophysiology. Thus, this study was conducted to compare the peripheral protein profiles between the two disorders. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 18 subjects with major depressive disorder and 15 subjects with bipola

Symptoms of social anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder: A network perspective.

BACKGROUND: We used network analyses to examine symptoms that may play a role in the co-occurrence of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Whereas latent variable models examine relations among latent constructs, network analyses have the advantage of characterizing direct relations among the symptoms themselves. METHOD: We conducted network modeling on symptoms of social anxiety and depression in a clinical sample of 130 women who met criteria for SAD, MDD, both disorders, or had no lifetime history of mental illness. RESULTS: In the resulting network, the core

Local functional connectivity alterations in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Local functional connectivity (FC) indicates local or short-distance functional interactions and may serve as a neuroimaging marker to investigate the human brain connectome. Local FC alterations suggest a disrupted balance in the local functionality of the whole brain network and are increasingly implicated in schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: We aim to examine the similarities and differences in the local FC across SZ, BD, and MDD. In total, 537 participants (SZ, 126; BD, 97; MDD, 126; and healthy controls, 188) completed re

Associations between LSAMP gene polymorphisms and major depressive disorder and panic disorder.

The purpose of this case-control genetic association study was to explore potential relationships between polymorphisms in the limbic system-associated membrane protein (LSAMP) gene and mood and anxiety disorders. A total of 21 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the LSAMP gene were analyzed in 591 unrelated patients with the diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD) or panic disorder (PD) and in 384 healthy control subjects. The results showed a strong association between LSAMP SNPs and MDD, and a suggestive association between LSAMP SNPs and PD. This is the first evidence of a pos
